edenfalling: stained-glass butterfly in a purple frame (butterfly)
I wasn't going to post this until I had the entire story written, but I am impatient and very frustrated with all my other projects right now, so. Here is the first chapter (of three) of "Ephemera," an Angel Sanctuary fic that attempts to give Belial coherent backstory and to flesh out Kaori Yuki's very sketchy timeline of heaven and hell.

I am convinced that Belial is OLD. Older than Lucifer and the elemental guardians, older than Alexiel and Rosiel, older than just about everyone except the Zodiac guardians (who are the remnants of an elder generation that seems to have been mostly wiped out in the first two holy wars). But heaven was around before Belial was born, and even back then it was a hierarchic, militaristic place. So what makes an angel -- raised to serve God and never question orders -- turn on all that and try to pull everyone else down as well?

(As always, if you are strongly and traditionally Christian -- or Jewish or Muslim -- you may not want to read this; the source manga is fairly blasphemous. Also, spoilers for any Belial-related twists in the manga, but if you've read through volume 8, you should be mostly okay.)
