This is a continuation of The Painted Sky, part 1, which I wrote back in early 2004. It's an Ekanu story, set when she's about thirty years old, and when she's just danced the first round in her on-again, off-again relationship with Ain h'sut chung h'Ril (whom you have yet to meet, because I have yet to get very far in writing "Small Mysteries," the first story in which he appears).

The Painted Sky, part 2 )

---------------------------------------------

Also, I have finished the rough draft of "Guardian" chapter 9. I hate the ending, though, so I'm not going to post it today. Maybe tomorrow. Failing tomorrow, then Saturday for sure. *angelic smile* See, it may take me a while, but I don't forget stories!

(Except "More or Less the Same," I suppose, but I started that one with the caveat that I might never finish it, and even there I do mean to get back to it someday after I rewatch BtVS season 4. And "Strange Likenesses," of course, but one of my current goals is to bang out some sort of ending for that story, if only for my own peace of mind.)

I intended to write part two of The Painted Sky, a story in which Ekanu takes a vacation and has a kinda-sorta fling with a younger man, but was stumped when I realized I know nothing about silk painting. And the guy's an artist. And he paints her and stuff.

Bugger.

So I went off on a tangent and invented a syllabic writing system, with tonal and grammar marks, in which each word must be compressed into a square space exactly congruent in size to every other word. So it's like Chinese, but not. Because it's syllabic instead of word-conceptual-pictographic. Plus grammar marks like ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Why I need to know this, I have no idea. But now I do.

I also know that Suyan (the language of Merin -- well, actually that would be Istae, specifically Istae hsüanh Sü'ien, the speech of the Eldest -- but that tends to get shortened to just Istae, speech, and Suyan is a corruption of Sü'ien that's used to identify the "purest" dialect) uses gendered nouns, and instead of a definite article, has a system of honorifics that attach to various words -- mostly nouns, but some verbs and modifiers.

I think I should just buckle down and look up silk painting methods via Google. *sigh* I know it'll be interesting, but it sounds so much like work!

This one's from later in her life, after she's finished her pledged service to the University. So she's about thirty here. (It's difficult to tell Ekanu's exact age, because her people don't consider birthdays important. They count age by winters. So she's thirty winters, but whether she's thirty years? I dunno.)

And as I should not be up at such an hour, despite Tuesday being a no-class day, I will sign off and get some sleep. Yay sleep!
