The pit of voles is being its usual link-eating self, so I am posting these here for reference and so I can make a single link pointing at this post instead of trying to make this whole damn list appear on my ff.net profile. :/

(Note: I am not sure all of these links are still live. I'll check them some other day.)

I am having serious trouble working up motivation to write, which is frustrating. Like, I will open a document, check where I was in the story, type maybe five words, and... nothing. Blank. It's particularly annoying if I've been mentally juggling and arranging ideas earlier in the day so I know roughly where I want to go and just can't quite get there once I am actually trying to type letters on a keyboard.

One thing that I've found helpful in the past when I've had trouble writing is to switch gears and write something completely different, and also -- this is the key part -- something with an external rather than internal pressure/reward system. Like prompt!fic.

So.

Give me one to three characters plus a mood, a scenario, or a prompt word, and I will write you a ficlet that is at least three sentences or 100 words long.

Help me out, please?

Sorry, this is not a new chapter. It's just internet housekeeping time again.

...

Okay, and it's an announcement that I have moved "Guardian" to the top of my to-do list and am actively working on it once more. I am not sure if anyone still cares at this late date, but hey, I want to finish the story for myself as much as for any hypothetical readers. I mean, I still don't know the ending! Not in any great detail, at least. And I really want to know what happens.

So cross your fingers for me, and we'll go find out together. :D

---------------

The Guardian in Spite of Herself: WIP, 68,000 words so far, started Dec. 2005. The reward for a job well done is a bigger job. In this case, Ayakawa Yukiko's new job is a lot more complicated than anyone expected. The Uchiha massacre and its aftermath, in the world of The Way of the Apartment Manager. Post-traumatic stress, extreme familial dysfunction, attempted social/political/military revolution, dubious ethical choices and discussion thereof.

"Guardian" is a darker story than "Apartment Manager," partly because of the subject matter, and partly because I decided to unpick the implications of the socio-cultural and economic system of the ninja villages rather than accept them as the status quo. Also, I structured it the way I would structure an original novel, which may have been a mistake from a fanfiction perspective. In other words, three of my four POV characters are OCs, only two of whom were introduced in the previous story, and the new OC is also meant to be a semi-sympathetic antagonist whose worldview challenges the moral principles of career ninjas.

In contrast to "Apartment Manager," this story has taken (and is still taking, so help me) forever and a day to write. I think that's partly because I wrote most of "Apartment Manager" in the throes of madly passionate new-fandom love, which is not sustainable, and partly because stories with multiple POVs and plot arcs are inherently more complicated than stories that have only one of each.

But I will win eventually. *resolve face*

[Note, 1/3/16: Read the story on AO3 or ff.net. The journal version is a beta draft with all the attendant glitches, though it may be of some minor interest as a historical artifact.]

The Guardian in Spite of Herself - Table of Contents )

I suspect "Guardian" will be 30-35 chapters when complete. My current outline lists 28, but my outlines inevitably expand in the writing.

Apropos of nothing in particular, all twelve of the sidefics for my "Apartment Manager" Naruto AU are now up on AO3 at this handy-dandy link. :-)

(This is kind of a promise to myself that I WILL get back to work on "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" as soon as I clear a couple more things out of the way. *crosses fingers, hopes for the best*)

And now to bed.

I am bored and attempting to stay awake. I am also, alas, out of inspiration for all my WIPs. So am I asking for prompts!

Give me a character or ship PLUS a scenario | setting | mood | line of dialogue, and I will try to write you a three sentence ficlet.

ETA: Prompts are closed! Thank you to everyone who contributed. :-)

It's internet housekeeping time again. Sorry for cluttering your reading page! (You may see a few more posts of this nature pop up over the next week or two. I'm trying to rationalize my fic directory posts -- specifically, I'd like them to point to Dreamwidth table-of-contents posts rather than to LJ memory subcategories. For one thing, I can put more information in an actual post! For another... well, LJ. *sigh*)

---------------

The Way of the Apartment Manager: 72,000 words, Dec. 2004 - Oct. 2005. Ayakawa Yukiko retired from being a ninja, and she's come to terms with that. Then the Third Hokage summons her for an assignment that will change her life. AU story, set six years pre-manga. Social ostracism and discussion thereof.

"Apartment Manager" is the first story in an AU continuity. It is followed by a WIP novel -- "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" -- and several sidestories. The basic idea is that when Naruto moves into his own apartment, the Third Hokage asks Ayakawa Yukiko, the building's owner and manager, to look after him rather than leaving him completely on his own. Yukiko is a mostly retired ninja, but Naruto catalyzes her to change her life. Then those changes begin to snowball out to the rest of the village.

The other AU shift is Kakashi's age. When I started writing these stories, I'd never seen Kishimoto's official timelines, so I guessed people's ages based on their appearance and characterization in the manga. I was pretty close with Iruka... but four or five years off with Kakashi. Unfortunately, by the time anyone pointed that out to me, his age had become integral to several character interactions -- for example, Yukiko treats him as a contemporary rather than an annoying teenager -- so I decided not to go back and make wholesale changes.

For a pre-canon story starring an original female character with another original female character in one of the prime supporting roles, "Apartment Manager" wound up ridiculously popular. I think it was one of those 'right story, right time' things that I could never duplicate if I tried. Also, it is absurdly fluffy for a Naruto story, violence and occasional angst notwithstanding.

I advise reading this story on AO3 or ff.net rather than on my journal, since the journal posts were essentially public beta drafts and were noticeably revised before being posted elsewhere. (The comments might be of some historical interest, I suppose.)

The Way of the Apartment Manager - Table of Contents )

*dusts hands* There, all tidy!

Hmm. I think I should do "Tides" next... which is also a good reason to format that fic and crosspost it to AO3, now that I think of it. Yes. I will work on that tomorrow.
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
In a fit of productivity, tonight I coded all the italics and posted the entirety of "The Way of the Apartment Manager" to AO3, two chapters at a time.

The Way of the Apartment Manager: Ayakawa Yukiko retired from being a ninja, and she's come to terms with that. Then the Third Hokage summons her for an assignment that will change her life. AU story, set six years pre-manga. (72,000 words)

I was interested to discover that AO3 thinks the story is about 2,000 words shorter than my own previous estimate of 74,000 words. This is doubtless because I cannot make MSWord stop counting dashes as text, so every time I break a sentence -- like so -- or use a line of dashes as a scene break, I add phantom words to the document. Whatever wordcount system AO3 uses does know to ignore dashes, and thus produces a more accurate count.

I didn't edit the story the way I did with "Secrets" this past summer, though it suffers from the same idiosyncratic punctuation choices I was fond of back in 2002-2006. I also didn't edit for content. "Apartment Manager" is not a perfect story, but it was written in less than a year rather than under ridiculously drawn-out conditions, and as such is very much a snapshot of my writing ability at a certain time. I was okay with tweaking "Secrets" to reflect some of my changed habits, since I was still working on the blasted novel up until this past July, but it would feel vaguely dishonest to make similar tweaks to "Apartment Manager."

This does mean there are a few points that read oddly in light of some later material -- for instance, the bit about no roads leading away from hidden villages, which I had to heavily qualify in "Guardian;" Yukiko's thought that it'll be weird for her cousin Yuichiro to be responsible for a kid even though they jointly babysat his younger siblings through much of their childhoods; and the way Yukiko talks about being bad at ninjutsu rather than about having a chakra coil disability -- but I am willing to let them stand as is. Such are the risks of serial writing.

(Also, I may find certain aspects of the story a little silly and/or awkward in retrospect, but clearly it spoke and speaks to a lot of people... and if it ain't broke, I'm not going to try fixing it. *wry*)
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
Found via [livejournal.com profile] askerian:

Pick one of my stories and I will tell you the first line (ETA: okay, the first few paragraphs, on the theory that context is more interesting than concision) of its sequel. Even if I was never actually planning to write a sequel. Even if it already has a sequel -- I'll give you the first line of another version of its sequel!

Do not ask me about "Strange Likenesses," because I don't yet know how that will end (basically, there is the wildly unlikely happy ending, several variants of the rather likely inconclusive ending, and the semi-likely 'rocks fall, everyone dies' ending). Everything else is fair game.

-----

Sequel snippets written so far:

for The Way of the Apartment Manager (So how did Naruto wind up friends with Sakura by the start of "Guardian"? I will probably continue this at some point.)

for Lemonade (Thus proving that I do so know where the story's going.)

for Endurance (This one turned into an actual fic, 900 words long. *headdesk* I am not sure how 'canon' this sequel is, though, as I'd left "Endurance" inconclusive for a reason.)

for New Horizons (ie, the story in which Ginny, Harry, and Draco have a post-DH-epilogue threesome in Greece. Naturally there are repercussions. *grin*)

for The Two Secretive Princesses (925 words on Toph and Mai during Ozai's invasion of Toure-on-Marsh. Rather dark.)
---[[or the more canonical version, which includes fewer deaths and more mentions of Aunt Ermintrude]]
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
I acquired a deviantART account a couple months ago, in order to see some pictures with a mature content filter. Tonight it occurred to me that I also have a scanner and some old hand-drawn art, and possibly I could put these three things together. *grin*

So here are two pencil sketches I drew almost exactly two years ago, back when "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" was not on hiatus:

Ayakawa Yukiko )

and

Tonoike Naga )

I am not much use as an artist, so these are basically just mug shots, but they are more or less how the characters look in my head. (Naga a bit more so than Yukiko.)

I tried, but I cannot seem to get the pictures to work as embedded images. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Does deviantART not allow... oh, what is the term... hotlinking? Or maybe (probably) I just suck at html. I tried to look up the right tags via Google, but the pictures still come out as little red Xs with alt text labels. Can someone walk me through the damn procedure? Please?

ETA: Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] doire!
