Angel Sanctuary canon is... well, frankly it's a mess. The mangaka is not great at keeping her own worldbuilding consistent, and the ending is a giant truckload of OMGWTFBBQ including stuff like a swarm of cannibalistic angel fetuses. But it's very pretty, and I love the characters and themes.
The elevator summary would be that Angel Sanctuary is the story of Setsuna Mudo, a high school student who discovers that he's the current incarnation of a cursed rebel angel and sets out on a quest to save his beloved sister from the forces of heaven and his angel self's insane twin. Includes a cast of thousands, some weird and vaguely Gnostic takes on Christian mythology, epic amounts of loyalty porn, and slightly unnerving amounts of incest.
Belial, aka Mad Hatter, is a secondary character at best, but an utterly fascinating one whose backstory I really do want to finish fleshing out one of these days.
