4 unrelated things: work; family trips; writing and reading; OMG SHIRTLESS RENJI

AO from work has been having skin problems on her hands for the past several months, and her only chance to see a doctor about it before October was at 11am today. Unfortunately, she was scheduled to be at work then, so I went in and covered for her.

It ate some of my nice day off, but hey, I'm not complaining about two extra hours' worth of paycheck!

---------------------------

My parents are home from Zurich -- their flight went fine, no security problems -- and tomorrow Dad heads for the Midwest. He should pick Vicky up in Indianapolis on Thursday and they'll head to the Twin Cities and then to Cass Lake. Vicky has been in Denver with friends, camping; I am madly jealous since I've never been to the southwest. I am even more madly jealous of Vicky for getting to the lake this summer, since I have no vacation time and am stuck in Ithaca. (Not that Ithaca is in any way a bad place, but I miss the cabin and I hate breaks in my streak of consecutive summers on the island.)

Meanwhile, Mom will visit me this weekend. So far, our tentative plan is to take a day trip to Seneca Falls, and probably hit some vineyards en route. Yay cradle of the American women's rights movement! (Apparently it's an interesting place. At least, when Aunt Jan and Uncle Bob visited me last summer, they were a couple hours late because they'd spent more time at Seneca Falls then they'd planned on.)

Writing is going very slowly; inspiration has temporarily deserted me, and I'm left relying on nothing but craft and outlines. You won't be able to tell the difference in the finished work, but it makes a hell of a difference to me while I stare blankly at my computer screen and attempt to string the words together.

I have been reading in an effort to fill in the otherwise frustratingly unproductive time. I am now 2/3 of the way through A Canticle for Leibowitz -- and my god, that's a depressing view of human nature -- and am also reading a nonfiction book called War and Peace and War Again, which is about the historical cycles of empires. I'm a little skeptical about some of the author's historical background, but he does raise some interesting points. He also writes like English is not his first language -- there's a persistent oddness about his usage of definite articles -- and I think his copy editor should have caught most of them, if he/she had been paying closer attention.

ETA: Have been reading more Bleach scanlations. Am now up through chapter 97 (I think that's in vol. 10...?) and I would like to direct people's attention to the chapter title drawing of Renji in chapter 96. Renji. Shirtless. With tribal tattoos.

Guh. *drools*

It's got to be the tattoos. Okay, and he has an oddly attractive smirk at times, and a very nice body. But OMG, tattoos! Renji!

*drools some more*
