They are an /enormous/ scam, especially since the authors often don't see a red cent of that. It all goes to the publisher or other "outlet". And prices have been hauled up again and again and /again/ by the publishers, with zero justification. Heck, I recommended piracy to all my students, because you can't steal from a thief.

(Well, you can, it's just that they /totally/ deserve it.)
