I have been beating my head against a ficlet for the past three or four days, and it just. would. not. go.
Five minutes ago I finally realized WHY it wouldn't go. It's because I had the POV character's initial attitude/circumstances all wrong, and so there was no character arc. Without a character arc, the only other place to go was a novel-length action/adventure arc that was 100% not what I was trying to write.
But if I fix that initial starting point, a wild character arc suddenly appears, and everything falls neatly into place. \o/

I'm going to leave the actual writing/rewriting for tomorrow, though, because it's late and I think that was enough creative effort for the day. *wry*
