daily update, Saturday April 25
Let's try to get back to these, since I am feeling less washed out than I was earlier in the week.
1. Today I gardened! Which breaks down to four things. First, I took my container plants outside for the afternoon. I still don't want to leave them out overnight, because Sunday and Monday are forecast to be chilly and wet (just like most of this past week, blargh), but I think as of Tuesday I may finally be able to move plants outdoors for keeps.
Second, I finished my early spring weeding pass through the back garden. It's not a perfect job, but I yanked quite a lot of plants out by the roots, or at least as far down the roots as I could get a decent grip with my spade and my fingers. I also raked off a bunch of dead leaves and dried grass and assorted dead plant matter than I'd left there over the winter.
Third, I tidied the raspberry canes -- made sure they were properly supported by the posts and twine, and staked one adventurous cane that was growing just a bit too far away to reach those supports.
Fourth, I planted yellow summer squash. I'm growing them from seeds rather than buying seedlings, which takes a bit longer but is significantly cheaper. I dropped two seeds per site (standard precaution against duds) and marked each area with a green stake because there is no way on earth I would otherwise remember the locations. Hopefully all seven sites will produce at least one seedling and they will cover most of the garden patch and shade out the majority of future weed takeover attempts. *crosses fingers*
I strongly suspect my back and shoulders are going to complain strenuously tomorrow. *wry*
2. Took kitchen compost to the communal bin. I should haul that back out to the curb for pickup on Monday.
3. Yesterday I received one set of the USPS first-class letter stamps I ordered a while back, so I have begun writing and mailing cards/letters to family and friends. I posted one today (to my parents), prepped another to post on Monday (to my brother), and intend to send one every couple days while coronavirus restrictions continue. I may also do postcards. I have a bunch of postcards left over from when I used to send regular mail to my grandmother, and postcard stamps are pretty cheap. (Note: I stopped sending postcards because she died, not because I'm a jerk. The USPS is awesome, but so far as I know, even they can't deliver mail to the dead.)
Actually, if you want me to send you a card or postcard, please feel free to leave your name and address via DM. Cheering messages for all!
4. Took a walk.
5. Vacuumed my apartment. UGH.
And that's it so far. This evening I intend to eat dinner, make a little progress on a clothing repair project, and get some writing done. (I managed ~450 words last night after I made my "stuff I've been up to" post.)
