I like writing canon stuff, because it's a good exercise in control. I like AUs because it's the sort of thing I always wonder about when I read stories: What if X had happened instead of Y? What if Character A believed Character B instead of letting his anger overwhelm his good sense? What if natural disaster Z struck the town ten years ago instead of during the story? And so on. Plus, they're a really good exercise in characterization, since you have to figure out what would remain the same and what would change due to environmental differences.
(I like writing improbable futures and unusual pairings for the same reason -- it's like asking myself "How can I make this seem plausible, given the characters and circumstances? How can I get from here to there?")
I've written a lot more HP fic than Naruto fic -- I've been in the HP fandom since February 2002, whereas I only started reading Naruto in late 2004 -- and a much higher proportion of it is short one-shots, whereas in Naruto I seem to lean toward long, chaptered stories.
