Today I learned how to make French knots.

I also learned that I do not particularly like French knots.

Also also, I think this particular cross-stitch pattern would have been fine with somewhat fewer French knots and somewhat more single Xs of the thread color in question. They are producing a basically similar effect, but one option is so much less work.

I am told French knots are easier if you have a freestanding frame so you can use both hands, but I haven't tried it.

To me the value is texture, but if you have no interest in that aspect, it's a fiddly thing that is just an annoyance. Better to run with your proposal of a single X. 🦊🧡

Oh, indubitably. Most things are easier with two free hands. I have been bracing my embroidery hoop against the edge of a desk with my arm so I can have at least some use of both.

Texture would become a lot more relevant if I were doing these knots with thicker thread -- instead I am working with a single strand of embroidery floss which might as well just be generic sewing thread, and it is deeply annoying.

Ah well. I will consider it a learning experience.
