The Mercverse collaborative AU is so removed from Final Fantasy 7 canon that it's practically original fiction -- but I suppose we do assume readers have a basic knowledge of what, exactly, we're ignoring or flipping on its head. And it's developed some in-jokes and shared tropes of its own, which are probably quite baffling if you haven't read most of the posts on the community lj. *sigh*
