My hometown was heavily Italian Catholic, so I have heard horror stories about Catholic religious education. The funny thing, though, is that it does, at the very least, produce people who are literate in their own religion... which is more than I can say for a lot of Protestant denominations. When the only kids in an English class who can spot all the Christian allusions and symbolism in a poem are the Catholics, the UU, and my friend Susan whose father was studying to be a minister -- which is what happened in my high school -- you know something has gone slightly wrong with Protestant Sunday school programs. *wry*
