Well, they are civilian children except for Keiei/Edmund, who has one or two years at the academy under his belt (...I couldn't resist, it explained various things so tidily), but even so. Definitely different cultural expectations! And just because they aren't shinobi doesn't mean they don't have a much greater familiarity with archaic weapons and an ease with the concept and reality of violence than British schoolchildren would.
