Re keeping up with news, I had the same problem immediately after leaving grad school (very politically oriented program), finding that I just didn't have the time to read sources the way I was accustomed to. I solved it by following a few news twitters -- I prefer BBC to most US sources; it's somewhat less hyped, but pretty much any outlet you like will have at least one twitter feed these days.
