wherein (shock! amazement!) Liz actually finishes a story

Back in 2005, I finished a Team 7-centric Naruto fanfiction called "Tides" and started work on what was meant as a short bridge-fic between that story and its planned sequel, "Leaves." I thought I could knock off the tale of an undercover assassination mission within a month or so.

Tonight, four years and 6,500 words later, I finally finished "Undertow."

I am not posting it yet -- the final scene is not very well balanced and I need to stick in a lot more sensory detail and stuff -- but the plot is done and I have an ending and a basic framework on which to hang the edits. That counts for a lot.

So that's one thing off my list of interminably delayed WIPs.

Congratulations!! I was just thinking about a series of stories I started working on, oh, four years ago. Still not finished. I'm about 2/3rds to 3/4ths through the last of the five stories, but I got really stuck and haven't looked at it in months. Maybe this is a good time to review and see if I can finish it.

"Secrets" is my oldest unfinished fanfiction project -- that one dates from May 2002. *headdesk* But I will finish it! Maybe even this year!

We need buttons and banners for our lonely little club. Is it just me, or has fandom's pace picked up so much that it's impossible to really LINGER on a fic and still have the audience there?

And I am going to finish all 30 of my WIPs, too... ha ha ha. Good goal, though.

It was an H/Hr series that I posted on my "adult" writing LJ. I think I called it "Aurors" originally, then I changed the title of the series to "Waiting to Happen".

Totally not just you! Updates every other month seems to be about as slow as you can go anymore, and even that will lose a lot of people.

Aside from my BtVS not-quite-a-self-insert story, I really do intend to finish all my WIPs. It just may take until 2015. Or 2020. *grin*

Sadly, some of those longer-than-four-year gaps were probably me. But anyway, one down... lots more to go. *sigh*

As for plot bunnies, at the moment, I am doing my damndest to restrict new stories to 15_minute_fic responses and occasional ficathon entries. Anything longer gets a page of background and outline notes in case I am still interested enough to come back to it in a few years, and then I close the file and pretend very hard it doesn't exist. So far, this has successfully diverted every idea! Okay, every idea except the Star Trek: AOS story I've nicknamed 'grief management for dummies; Spock, this means you.' But one out of dozens isn't half bad.

The rough draft is currently 6,700 words, which may be a third of the way through the story. But perhaps it is only a quarter of the story. Either way, I expect it to be at least 20,000 words by the time I'm done with it. *sigh* And it was originally meant to just be a short conversation over a sushi dinner. Where did I go wrong???
