Vacation '10, Days 5 & 6: Work and Water

On Wednesday we again got a late start, and did not head out on our hike until noonish. I did not turn back after all, and the four of us (plus dog) successfully hiked all around Lake Windigo (which is the lake in the middle of Star Island) and returned home at about 1:30pm. We did a bit of trail maintenance as we went, since Dad was armed with a set of hedge clippers. :-)

Later in the day, I helped Dad adjust one of the bottom railings on the stairs to the dock, since we had misaligned it slightly when we put it on initially. We also attached the child railing on the other side. Then we took the tree clippers and two handsaws and cleared away the upper section of a tree that had fallen across the tennis court path to the south shore, so it is passable once again. Finally we hauled the pole clipper out of the shed and trimmed some high branches that blocked the spotlight at the top of the stairs (which illuminates the dock at night), and some other branches that interfered with our wireless internet signal.

We also did laundry.

Today we had pancakes for breakfast (eating shortly before 9:30, which is, embarrassingly, the earliest we have gotten started this week). Dick Larson and his crew were back to finish their work on the chimney foundation; when they were done, Dad and I laid out the old dock boards we use to make a walkway around the cabin. (Mostly this is to keep mud off of shoes and out of the cabin.)

The weather heated up remarkably compared to yesterday, so we all went down to the dock. Mom and Aunt Cara read on lawn chairs while Dad and I put the Styrofoam bumpers onto the shore station (to cushion the boat when it's resting there). Then I did a bit of swimming and splashing about, after which I sunbathed and Dad joined the others in the whole reading-on-lawn-chairs thing. :-)

We had various crackers with various toppings (smoked salmon, Greek olive hummus, cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, and cream cheese) for lunch, after which Aunt Cara finished packing and Mom and Dad drove her to the mainland in the boat. They then did a bit of grocery shopping. I stayed on the island to keep the dog company and feed her dinner. She gets very lonely while her people are gone, and would have preferred to spend the whole hour plus down on the dock staring forlornly at the water.

Tomorrow we may be in the water again (if the weather continues hot), or we may hike, or we may do other things. In the evening, we will go to the mainland and Mom will drive me down to the Twin Cities while Dad head back to the island. My plane leaves at 11am Saturday morning, so Mom and I will spend Friday night in a motel, since it's about a four hour drive from Cass Lake to Minneapolis.

Now I am getting back to writing. :-)
