We left New Jersey yesterday morning and drove to Elgin Illinois, west of Chicago. Today we pushed on to Ardis's house in St. Paul, arriving at about 2:30pm. Who says road trips are dead? We drove straight through two thunderstorms, one in the dark last night, and one this morning where lightning once struck so close to us that I could see it dissolve into sparkles of burning air as it vanished. Which was kind of freaky, but really cool. :-D

Am updating on the run in a break from helping change some fluorescent lights. Also, I may not have a chance for another couple days, since we're going to be awfully busy opening the cabin. We have to clean everything, turn on the water, get the pump ready, finish putting together the bottom of the staicase up from the dock, and so on. Not much spare time.

Lasair, I saw that you sent an email, but Ardis's computer is old and won't let me read it. :-(

Must run and wipe off the light covers with a damp rag!

I see what you're saying, but as the author I'm making a stylistic decision and saying "no." *shrug* Quote marks around any of the narration/dialogue look weird to me given that anything not dialogue I've already put into square brackets. Potayto, potahto.

People say potahto? Ye gods. I thought there was only a tomahto tomayto divide.

And I totally see where you're coming from - I wouldn't have suggested it at all were it not for the italicised Latin bits, which could be confusing to the reader. Overall, no quotes probably does work best.

Elgin!! Mr U has relatives right outside Elgin, and his sister used to live there before she and her DH moved to Tennessee a few years ago. Funny, I didn't feel you waving up Interstate 90 toward me ;) Have fun in the Twin Cities.

We went out to Red Lobster for dinner with Ardis (my stepgrandmother), and today we drove up to Cass Lake where we have a cabin on Star Island. (It's just recently been declared a Historic Site!) We're opening the cabin this year, so it's going to be a lot of work. But it's always great to get to the island.

Star Island? Isn't there a UU summer camp there? I know someone who's been to Star Island as staff.

Funny thing: there's a UU camp on Star Island in Minnesota. (It's called Unistar.) There's also a much more famous UU camp on a different Star Island off the coast of New England.

This caused endless confusion at my church until we worked out that we were talking about two different islands.

So there are two different Star Island UU camps?? The person I know worked at Star Island camp in MN, I'm about 90% sure, but I'll ask her next time I see her.
