Okay, you know what? Screw this story, I am going to literally have ninjas attack out of nowhere, because that was kind of the idea anyway and I'm working in a canon where that makes perfect sense.

It's actually a fic idea you suggested about two years ago -- Sakura and Sasuke thwart an assassination attempt while Naruto gives a speech, in the Summer Camp & Politics AU. Except apparently they're taking the politics part of the AU seriously and just keep talking about elections. Also flirting horribly. But mostly elections and court cases. It is very frustrating!

Most of my work is at least potentially alive to continuations or ancillary oneshots. Which does not, of course, mean that such additional ficlets are always likely... but this verse was definitely one that I kept sort of idly turning over in the back of my mind in hopes that it would catch a spark again. :-)

I feel that "ninjas attack out of nowhere" is a fine, fine trope. Infinitely better than "coffee shop", although that isn't saying much.

(Seriously, though, it's actually a really good fic that manages to translate the characters and their situations into modern rural Australia -- and also quite literally be a coffee shop AU -- which should perhaps not be possible but hey, here's the hard evidence that it can be done and done well.)
