I tend to forget how WEIRD fandom is, until something like this reminds me

A few weeks ago my sister fell down the rabbit hole into writing original ebook erotica/porn (which I may advertise at you when she has herself a bit more organized), and has been doing a bunch of research on and around the topic.

Today she sent me this text:

Just discovered Omegaverse. And the J2 SPN and 1D fandoms within. What. The. Actual. Fuck. Someone needs to write a dissertation about this and feminism, stat.

After I stopped laughing (very quietly, because I am at work), I sent her back:

(It's funny to me because Vicky actually knows a lot about fandom for someone who is not directly fannish on her own -- it comes up when I talk about my life, and she has edited a bunch of my fic over the years -- but I hadn't realized how much I self-censor the really weird, kinky, or just generally high-context stuff out of our conversations, partly from residual embarrassment and partly because I don't want to spend two hours laying the background for a one-minute anecdote.)

Well, I have never claimed to be an especially nice or good person... ;)

I think she's treating the whole experience (brain-breaking included) as a refreshing break from her job, where she's currently suffering the twin woes of being a new project manager (all the responsibility, none of the authority) and some passive-aggressive backstabbity office politics.

I have a few students who read/have read fanfic, and I really hope they don't discover these things until many years later in their fandom experiences.

Most of the kids in the church youth group I've been facilitating are in fandom to some degree, and when they discuss Hamilton or the MCU or whatever, I always have this little running commentary in the back of my head saying, "I wonder if they're familiar with [fill in desperately kinky trope]... and if not, should I tell them?"

Obviously I don't tell them, nor do I ask about their browsing/reading habits, but I get very curious sometimes. *wry*
