bits and pieces of the moving process

On Tuesday, Landlord Dude asked if he could drop by my apartment on Wednesday or Friday to take some photos for use in advertising the unit. I said Wednesday was no good, but Friday was fine.

So I did NOT put off my laundry another week and instead washed everything on Wednesday, as well as tidied a bit. Thursday I did more tidying, put away all the clean laundry, and also baked snickerdoodles for a memorial service because I promised to do that a couple weeks ago and didn't remember until Thursday morning. (This is how me promising cookies for memorial services always goes.)

Then this morning I ran a dustmop across a bunch of surfaces and tidied a couple more things.

Hopefully he will get decent photos!

He also mentioned that he will have to start showing the apartment, which is fair. I do want to get some of the stuff I have been boxing up (or collecting for donation) OUT prior to any strangers tromping around, but that's not really under my control, so whatever.

Three more days at Not the IRS (Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday) and I will be DONE!!! for the year. I don't know if I want to do taxes next year in Minnesota -- on the one hand, I do enjoy the work, but on the other hand, it is a logistical pain in the neck and runs me ragged for 3.5 months of the year. Ah well. We'll see how job searching goes in general before I make a decision on that front.

(Apparently my dad has said that he expects me to live in their basement for 2 to 12 months, which seems like a reasonable range. We all hope it's closer to 2 months, but he suggested that it would be fine for me to lurk in their basement and finish a BA in accounting while doing taxes on the side rather than dive straight into the job market. TBH I would prefer to have a steady job and do school on the side a couple years from now when I am eligible for cheap in-state tuition rates, but. Y'know. Who can say what will make the most sense in six months? *waves hands at the general state of the world*)

misc botanical nonsense

Today I repotted a bunch of plants. Tomorrow I need to buy some more potting soil because I still have four to go.

I also need to buy a bit of chain for hanging one of my newly potted plants from the ceiling, but that's a less immediately pressing concern.

Some of the plants in question are houseplants, but others are from the Wine & Herb fest and need to go outside once potted.

I actually was going to take one out this afternoon, but when I did I discovered that I REALLY do not trust the structural integrity of my back porch/deck thingy. I must text Landlord Dude and let him know he needs to replace that this summer.

(For context, the deck is untreated wood and I have lived in this apartment since June of 2009. I do my best to keep the deck clean and clear, but there comes a time when decay cannot be staved off any further.)

bodies (ugh) and smoke alarms (ugh)

Woke up with a sore throat around 4am this morning -- probably yesterday's exhaustion was the first sign of this latest upper respiratory ailment's onset. I did feel better otherwise, though, so after another several hours of sleep I went in to work and successfully caught up on my email and some other stuff.

I think I will once again go to bed early, on the theory that the best way to mitigate illness is to get as much sleep as possible so my body can divert all resources to my immune system.

-----

Completely unrelated: the smoke alarm by my front door began beeping two minutes after I got up. I pushed the test button to reset it, but that didn't resolve the issue. I suspect it may be a low battery, but for the moment I took the whole thing down and pulled it apart. (I have three other smoke alarms, this is fine for a day or two.) I will poke at it tomorrow evening, assuming I am feeling less drained.

ugh, logistics

This evening I realized that my habit of scheduling tax CE virtual class sessions on Tuesdays has betrayed me in November, because I will be working on the 22nd in order to take the 23rd off. This is, of course, because I will spend the entirety of the 23rd driving to Chicago.

(In point of fact, I will start the trip the evening of the 22nd to knock off a couple hours, because I am not the most efficient long-haul driver. My eyes are strongly susceptible to road strain, so I tend to pull off every 45-75 minutes to give them a break, and often to take a little 10-minute nap for good measure.)

Anyway, I rescheduled two classes, and for a third I will just go into work early on Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd to make up for taking a 2-hour break from 10am to noon. Oops.

-----

In unrelated news, yesterday I did laundry a whole week late -- sometimes life just kind of happens, you know? -- and today I folded, hung, and otherwise put away the majority of the clean items. \o/

I also repaired the pocket in a pair of comfy pajama pants, so I can now once again stash my phone there while lounging around the house.

Oh, and it's Halloween! We (by which I mean the tenants of the four apartments in my house) pooled our money and Downstairs Neighbor S purchased a whole mess of candy for trick-or-treaters. We still ran out before the end of the night, as is traditional. I live in a destination trick-or-treating neighborhood -- lots of local kids; lots of houses close together, many of which are duplexes; slow traffic; good sidewalks; you know the drill -- so we are perennially slammed and never have quite enough even though we keep increasing the money pool.

I also provide a wicker basket and a laminated "Take 2 Pieces" sign (for when we're not around to staff the porch), because if you can't misappropriate the office laminator for personal projects, what is even the POINT of having one around??? ;p

wherein Liz does a lot of stuff

Today was a good day with abundant spoons! (...I should go to bed early more often, huh.)

I managed to:

1. Attend a virtual tax prep CE class from 10am to 12pm, during which I learned stuff, participated in class discussion, and also cooked scrambled eggs and a toasted English muffin for breakfast, made tea in my new teapot, washed all my dishes, changed my sheets and towels, and made decent progress on a cross stitch project.

2. Wash laundry, dry laundry and/or hang items to air dry, and put away my linens. (Clothing can wait for tomorrow.)

3. Have a productive conversation with Downstairs Neighbor S, during which I returned a mason jar (she used it to give me a sunflower bouquet a while back in thanks for bringing in her mail); gave her an empty canning jar (I have no use for it and I know she cans fruits/veggies/etc.); and gave her $25 for candy purchases, a wicker basket, and my laminated "Take 2 Items" sign in preparation for Halloween. I also managed to end the conversation within 15 minutes without being rude! \o/

4. Attend a different virtual tax prep CE class from 3pm to 5pm, during which I learned stuff, participated in class discussions, and made more progress on my cross stitch project.

5. Buy groceries, and return a bunch of Coke cans for bottle refund credit now that I have figured out where the store moved their can/bottle return machines after their newest remodel. (They have added a tiny bank branch beside the customer service counter.)

6. Rearrange my dresser drawers to remove some items I don't use anymore and to create space for some new items I have recently purchased. This involved using some shoeboxes and USPS flat rate mailing boxes to make little designated sections, and I was therefore able to partially consolidate my collection of empty boxes.

7. Whack off the top of my schefflera, because it had gotten ridiculously leggy. I stuck the cutting in a vase to root, and might whack off another portion of the parent plant to see if I can encourage it to bush out a bit more.

8. Write and post my November rent check super early, and also pay off the rest of my October Visa bill. (I'd made a partial payment last week because I didn't have cash on hand to cover the entirety of my December airplane tickets. But! Last Friday was payday, so I can now cover the balance and not owe any interest.)

And now I think I shall mosey along in the general direction of my bed, because the older I get, the more I realize that sufficient sleep is a necessity rather than an optional bonus. *wry*

insurance and other financial products

Today, after literally 20 years of living in assorted rental housing situations, I finally bought renter's insurance.

Yes, I know. I have been ABSURDLY lucky to avoid catastrophes this long!

But I was printing out my new car insurance cards just now, and it occurred to me that luck cannot last forever and insurance bundling is a thing, so as long I was logged into Geico anyway -- why not? And now I am insured for a year for the low annual cost of $158.00, paid in full to avoid installment charges. :)

As a random bonus, I can now explain with greater authority to rental company tenants why they should get renter's insurance and how it is both cheap and painless. *wry* Previously I always felt slightly hypocritical about that, the same way I feel slightly hypocritical about selling add-on products to my tax prep clients.

(I mean, I wouldn't pay for most of them... but then again, I actively enjoy doing taxes so I wouldn't pay for tax prep in the first place, and clearly that is not the case for my clients! Just because I personally don't care about paying for audit support and representation doesn't mean it's not a valuable service for other people. *hands* And I do think the Not the IRS tax ID theft protection and identity restoration aid service is a good deal, so that one I do wholeheartedly recommend.)

And now back to spreadsheets. *sigh*
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
2022-05-13 08:48 pm

it felt like incipient thunderstorms all day, but alas, no rain!

Things done today:

1. More inquiries.

2. More spreadsheets.

3. Our office phone system went down for a few hours in the middle of the day. That was fun, especially when Lawyer Man received a copy of an email that said, essentially, "I tried to call but your phones are down so I am emailing my question instead" and panicked a bit at me like three hours after I'd already answered the email and also the phones had been fixed. *headdesk*

4. Rented two apartments.

5. Scheduled a tour and an apartment inspection.

6. And in non-work news, I trimmed the interior of the lilac bush and installed my air conditioner! \o/ (These tasks are related because the lilac bush grows directly outside the window where I place my AC, so every year I have to hack away the new growth to create vacant space for the machine. I will do the main pruning job in a couple weeks, once the lilac has finished flowering for the year.)

Now I am going to nurse my new collection of mosquito bites in my slowly cooling apartment. *wry*
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
2022-05-12 08:23 pm

too darn hot

I cannot actually be bothered to install my air conditioner today, particularly since it's already getting too dark for me to usefully prune the lilac bush (it's right next to the window and pruning makes it grow back very enthusiastically, so each year I have to clear a space for the AC all over again), but tomorrow night it's only supposed to get down to about 66 Fahrenheit after a midday high in the low 80s, so tomorrow is AC installation day.

Tonight I will just run all my fans full blast.

Hmm. And I need to buy a fourth fan, to replace the one that died last year. Right now I have the box fan to draw air in, the fan in my bedroom aimed directly at my bed, and the small fan that usually circulates air through the kitchen but is currently acting as my computer room fan. It does an okay job cooling me while I work, but is not adequate for shoving air out of the room once I have the AC turned on.

Right. I will look into that...

a reappearance!

Things and stuff:

1. We had a small church Board meeting Saturday morning to meet with a UUA representative about [various topics redacted], which I think went well though I had to bail early in order to get to work.

2. Company Owner has been raising rents at a rapid clip, much to my and Mr. Geniality's mutual frustration, because it makes us look like jerks to prospective tenants when we have to tell them a quoted rent is no longer valid. Also I have to update all the numbers every time -- in our internal spreadsheets, on our website, in our internal databases, and in all of our online advertising through multiple third-party websites. Anyway, we stalled him for a couple days on the most recent raise because of [reason redacted], but I will need to spend all of Monday fucking around with numbers, argh.

2. On a tangentially related note, Landlord Dude and I signed my 2022-23 lease extension this afternoon. He's raised my rent by $50/month, which is actually more than fair because as a leasing agent I can assure you that my rent is still significantly under market rate for the size and location of my apartment. Such are the benefits of being a long-term tenant. :D (Also Landlord Dude tends to forget to raise my rent for several years in a row, so instead of getting small annual increases, I get larger ones every few years.)

4. Tax Day approacheth, and I have been doing a surprising amount of actual work at the Not the IRS office. I guess online appointment scheduling does make some difference... and also my colleagues know that I am really a level 3 tax preparer though my official certification is only level 2 -- I keep forgetting to test up -- so they're comfortable throwing various clients at me even if the official matching software won't pull up my name.

Today I had to give some bad news to a client who started doing some self-employment stuff in 2021, hadn't realized how that affected their tax situation, and wound up owing the IRS a fair chunk of money. Hopefully my advice has put them in a better position for 2022!

5. I started on a blood pressure medication a week and a half ago. I have no idea if it's doing what it's meant to do -- I will have to pull out my home blood pressure machine and check on that -- but so far I haven't had any dramatically awful side effects. The main thing has been... uh... okay, I'm going to cut this next sentence. cut for body-related TMI ) This does seem to be settling out a little, and some of the cramping may have been related to ovulation (yes, I can track that; my cycle is irregular but my body believes in adequate warnings *sigh*), but it's something I intend to keep an eye on and report to my doctor if it doesn't fully clear up in the next week or two.

6. I think I mentioned a while back that I had started hate-playing the NY Times Spelling Bee. I have since stopped hate-playing and settled into just playing -- mostly because I realized I could lie down on my bed and use my actual physical dictionary to help me find suitable words. :D I also use the hints section religiously, because I don't care about bragging rights -- I just want to find all the words and be done with it.

I have learned some ridiculous "words" that I don't think are real words but turn up a lot; run into several perfectly cromulent words that are, I think, much more common than some NY Times-approved "words" but are not accepted; and have sent some grumpy emails about "How can you not have allowed [redacted] as a word -- here it is in the dictionary and on Wikipedia, so what the fuck!" (but, you know, politely). I have also determined that I have two reactions to learning which words I missed (when I miss any) from a previous day. The first is, "Okay, fair play, that's on me," while the second is, "Oh fuck you, that's nonsense." *wry*

7. The Collegetown office of the rental company has FINALLY found a new hire. I have been doing some training this past week -- I got yanked up to Collegetown on Thursday because Aunt Boss was on vacation and one of Mom Boss's kids was out of school sick, so we needed coverage -- and I have high hopes that he will work out. He won't get a nickname for another couple weeks, though, and for the moment he remains New Hire... uh... 6.

For reference: New Hire 1 was super nice and drove me to the hospital when I had my kidney stone, but had scheduling conflicts and didn't work out. New Hire 2 was Miss Goldberry, who was awesome. New Hire 3 thought office hours were suggestions and was fired during the trial period. New Hire 4 was Miss California, who was also awesome. New Hire 5 found the office too fast-paced and quit.

8. My sleep schedule got kind of misaligned for a while, but I have begun to wrench it back into some kind of order, as part of which I took a nap this evening and will shortly return to bed so as to get a solid 8.5 hours of sleep. And on that note, adieu!

2022-03-06 09:06 pm

assorted thoughts make a post

Things and stuff:

1. On Thursday, a potential tenant asked if we had a sample parking lease they could see. I said sure! And then panicked quietly for a minute because while the Collegetown office has a sample parking lease, the downtown office did not, because our parking lease was a terrible jerry-rigged mess that Lawyer Man "coded" in Rent Manager instead of a sensible fillable form Word document, and had to be separately generated for each new parking space.

So I generated a fake parking lease, edited it until it was generic, and emailed it to myself as a PDF (because trying to save documents from Rent Manager to our computers is an exercise in screaming frustration), after which I uploaded that horrible bodge to our website on the forms page and emailed a copy to the prospective tenant.

Then I set about making a proper fillable form Word document parking lease for downtown, based on the Collegetown parking lease but incorporating some aspects unique to downtown, such as the variant payment structures. I submitted it to Mom Boss for approval on Friday morning, made some edits as per her instructions, and now the downtown office has a functional parking lease instead of Lawyer Man's garbage. \o/

I am going to leave this office in SO MUCH BETTER SHAPE than I found it, seriously.

2. I have been subpoenaed to testify in an ongoing civil suit the rental company is involved in. I suspect most of my testimony will consist of a specifically phrased line Lawyer Man has provided (the contents of the statement are true; the exact phrasing is legally relevant), and explaining how none of our ads include any language related to the issue under dispute, because they don't and so far as I know never have. (They certainly haven't since I took over the ads in summer of 2020.) The court date is March 24, and I will have to drive all the way to goddamn Binghamton and back (plus wait for an indefinite period of time, because no court has ever run on schedule in the history of ever) to give my testimony. Ugh.

3. Cat, Susan, and I had a Zoom call Saturday night! It is always good to catch up as a group and not just one-on-one, and also good to be able to see each other. :)

4. I planted my bell pepper and jalapeno seeds today. I also did some prep work for zucchini seeds, but those sprout in about... 7-10 days? and need to be transferred outdoors within 2-3 days thereafter. Thus I won't plant those until early April. so as to reduce the risk of frost.

5. I had been vaguely meaning to read Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small quartet for many years (having loved the Song of the Lioness quartet since I was... 10? 11? Look, I found a copy of The Woman Who Rides Like a Man in the library because it was next to Meredith Ann Pierce's books, managed to track down the first two books over the next couple years, and didn't find book 4 until I was in high school. My childhood library had no YA section so the kid's section was, shall we say, highly eclectic. (I also read the Immortals quartet sometime in high school, though I didn't imprint on that nearly so deeply)), and on Thursday it occurred to me that my current local library might have ebook versions of some of Tamora Pierce's work. In the event, they did! I read First Test and Page in rapid gulps, and am nearly finished with Squire tonight. It is interesting to see the books get longer and the narrative tone change as Keladry grows up. Also, I love Kel. She is the best! ♥

6. I am attempting to do some spring cleaning of my apartment, which is currently a horrendous mess and has begun to annoy me. I got some things tidied up this afternoon after a shift at Not the IRS, but I still have a long way to go. *sigh*

7. Speaking of Not the IRS, today I had a client who got screwed over by Cornell because while they tell graduate students on stipends that some of that money is taxable and none of it is withheld, they don't provide any active assistance with setting up estimated tax payments. So my client got whacked with a significant federal and state tax payment, plus a state underpayment penalty, and I could tell they were upset which made me upset. I tried to give some advice on how to make sure this didn't happen again next year, but it sucks to not be able to help in the moment, you know? :(

8. In brighter news, Friday was Nick's birthday! I called right as he and our parents were sitting down for him to open presents, so I got to be on speakerphone through all of that, which was nice. He continues to suffer from what we are now pretty sure are chronic migraines, but at least the symptoms are slightly less awful? That or he's learning to cope with/compensate for them.

Chronic illness is such bullshit. The human impulse is to make things better, but some things don't lend themselves to being "made better" -- our instincts are all set up for acute events, not chronic conditions. We want a narrative: problem, struggle, solution. And sometimes the narrative is just, "And then they kept on dealing with the same damn thing day after day for the rest of their life," which is not emotionally satisfying and I think a lot of people aren't sure how to deal with that.

...

It's especially annoying because I have a chronic condition of my own (depression) which I manage because there isn't really a "cure" and yet I still find myself struggling with how to talk to Nick about his health. Brains suck sometimes, you know?

...

I think I will now go attempt some more apartment tidying.

carelessness goeth before a fall

So last night I said to myself, "I bet the front steps will be slippery tomorrow morning, since it's been nearly 40 degrees today and there will be a hard freeze down into the mid-teens overnight. I should salt them."

But did I put salt on the steps? No I did not, because I was in a hurry to make some soup and get ready for the Board of Trustees meeting. And then I'd completely forgotten by the time the meeting was finished.

Normally this would not be a problem, because normally I am cautious on the steps as a general point of policy. However, I was rushing this morning as part of my plan to get to work early and make up for yesterday's time lost waiting at Goodyear, and what did I do?

Slipped on the icy steps and went down like a sack of hammers.

My glasses flew off. I dropped my bag. And I banged the shit out of the lower right of my skull, my right elbow, and my right hip/butt.

Fortunately nothing broke, and I do not have a concussion! But I had to lie on the cold, snow-dusted brick and concrete for a couple minutes, cursing and trying to recover my breath, before I was able to gingerly stand up. (And able to salt the damn steps! *headdesk*)

I spent the morning at work typing left-handed while holding a freezer pack to my head with my right (gloved) hand and felt like I was recovering.

And then, when I was out grabbing lunch, I realized my house keys were missing.

...

...

I texted my neighbors, who hadn't seen them.

I then texted Landlord Dude to ask him to leave my front door unlocked after he finished unclogging my kitchen sink.

Fortunately, he was able to find my keys next to the steps where they'd flown out of my hand when I fell, and has left them tucked under my welcome mat.

So. All's well that ends well, I guess?

3 things make a post: car repairs, Board meeting, sink (lack of) repairs

1. The Goodyear staff fixed my car! It turns out that the front right corner of the under-engine shield had torn loose, so they trimmed off the useless part and refastened the rest with some zip-ties, as one does. Apparently the fender also got knocked a little loose, and couldn't be reattached with complete security because one of the connecting bits snapped off, but it's functional enough and fender replacements are expensive, so I will let it be for now.

I also got my windshield wipers replaced while I was there, because I had the money and they had gotten a little ragged, so why not.

2. Tonight's board meeting ran a bit long but not as long as we feared, and my minutes are in very nice shape if I do say so myself. I also helped formulate a long and complicated motion that we basically wrote in real-time... and volunteered myself for a project, which is less cool, but it needed doing and it's something I can do fairly easily (write a thing and give it to the administrator to send out to the congregation), so eh. I will manage.

3. Landlord Dude was unfortunately unable to come fix my kitchen sink today, but he promised to come tomorrow, so that's also manageable.

I intend to work 9am-6pm tomorrow to make up for being an hour late today (on account of car stuff), and therefore I believe I shall go fall into bed. :)

not an ideal day, all things considered

Things that happened to me today:

1. Drove over a big chunk of ice that tore loose part of the plastic shield under my car engine. The plastic segment is now hanging down and scraping against the road when I drive, which makes a horrible racket and cannot possibly be good for my poor car. I have made an appointment with Goodyear to get it looked at tomorrow, and will get Mr. Geniality to drive me from Goodyear to work.

2. My kitchen sink clogged up again, the same way it did at the end of October. I dumped as much of the standing water as I could into my bathroom sink (which is draining fine), and have texted Landlord Dude to come unclog it tomorrow.

3. Found a dead mouse in the cabinets under the kitchen sink. *sigh* It had been there at least a day, long enough for gross details about dead animals ) Anyway, I flicked it out into the snowy waste of the back yard (I didn't want to shovel my back steps just to dispose of a mouse), scrubbed down the shelf, and bleached the daylights out of the snap trap.

I will need to set a new trap after Landlord Dude fixes my drains.

...

In other news, the Three Sentence Ficathon fill that got away from me is now 2,075 words and counting. What even is my life. *headdesk*

wherein Liz tackles (and/or avoids) various life tasks

Today I:

1. Worked in the Collegetown office, which mostly involved a lot of move-ins and several people returning inspection forms (good tenants! you are helping both us and yourselves!), but also a bunch of emails to and from Mr. Geniality about downtown stuff. I think I will not need to head in to work overtime tomorrow morning/afternoon, but I will doublecheck in the morning to see if Mr. Geniality has been swamped and might need aid.

2. Decided not to do laundry after all, and instead to take a brief nap and then faff around in service of my own mental health. Tomorrow.

3. Learned from Landlord Dude that the faucet he ordered did not arrive and in fact is now scheduled to arrive Thursday at the earliest. *sigh* So that's my bathroom sink basically unusable for another few days, but whatever, at least this will force me to wash my dishes more often because spitting used toothpaste foam onto a pile of dirty dishes that I will later have to touch with my actual bare hands is somehow beyond gross.

4. Found a quick 1-credit tax CE course and knocked it off, so that's me officially done for the year! I mean, I have a live online course lined up for September, and I'm working through a couple other things, but that's by way of general edification and keeping my hand in rather than legal requirements with deadlines, you know? So it's totally a different vibe.

5. Started the pre-training homework for a UUA virtual training 3-session course on helpful Board of Trustees habits, which was recommended to my congregation. The first session is tomorrow evening, so I have kind of left this to the last minute but I am super not emotionally invested in this so I don't care. Also the homework is dead simple -- it's basically reading some articles and watching a couple short videos, which, pfft, whatever.

And now I think I will go attack a paint-by-numbers project I purchased last week. We shall see how that turns out.

2021-08-13 09:36 pm

other things from today

1. Landlord Dude replaced the bulb in my living room overhead light fixture (which requires a ladder taller than my generic stepladder to reach), and unclogged my bathroom sink drain. Unfortunately he was unable to stop the leak from the bathroom sink faucet, and has concluded that the entire faucet attachment needs to be replaced because it's about forty years old and badly corroded. So he's coming back tomorrow to handle that.

2. I was only at work for about 3 hours today, which is okay since I wound up working 5 hours on Tuesday instead of my planned 4 hours. I may tweak next week's schedule somewhat similarly, or at least see if I can do a little overtime on Tuesday to hopefully finish up staging, photographs, and video for our final apartment turnovers.

Also we had two apartments come available unexpectedly -- one of our potential holdover tenants left with no fuss, and an incoming tenant abruptly backed out -- so right before I locked up for the night, I sent an email to the ~50 people on our waitlist saying, essentially, "Hey, we have two rooms, they're super-low end dorm-style rooms but if you want them, please follow these two simple steps. We will send lease documents to anyone who has completed those steps by noon on Saturday."

So we'll see what my inbox looks like tomorrow morning. *wry*

3. We still didn't get a thunderstorm (one threatened several times yesterday, and I briefly heard distant thunder this afternoon), but we did get a little rain and the heat wave has finally started to break. Which is nice, because this past week stepping outside of any air-conditioned refuge has felt like stepping into a sauna that hates me on a deep personal level.

I am so done with summer.

2021-08-12 08:42 pm

blargh

Five things make a post:

1. Covid-19 test came back negative. \o/

2. The new tenant of a unique apartment that I badly wanted to stage, photograph, and video told us in July that they would arrive on Friday, August 13. I had been putting off staging that apartment because it's a third-floor walkup and I thought I had some breathing room to get more pressing apartments dealt with, and planned to do the staging today. I even brought in some of my own wall-art to help make the unfurnished rooms look good.

Well, it turns out the tenant actually arrived on Tuesday, August 10. Mr. Geniality did not notify me when they picked up the keys (I might have been able to squeak 45 minutes out before they actually moved in), so they've now moved in all their own furniture and whatnot and it is far too late to do anything.

I'm a little annoyed about that. *sigh*

3. My parents got delayed by traffic and will arrive circa 10pm instead of 9pm, so I am kind of killing time for an hour and a half.

4. It continued to be beastly hot and humid, so I decided to wear my pretty, lightweight blue-green broomstick skirt with the purple flower design. It was indeed very comfy! Then I accidentally tore a hole in the back hem this afternoon, when it got caught in the wheel of an office chair. I am unpleased.

5. I successfully remembered to text Landlord Dude about my living room light and bathroom sink maintenance issues, and he said he'll come fix them on Friday. \o/

wherein Liz muses about plants

Some gardening and other botanical updates:

1. My lilac bush (...by which I mean the lilac outside my front window, which I am kind of possessive of even though all the landscaping really belongs to Landlord Dude) has a pattern where one year it will bloom normally, and then the next year or two it will only produce two to six flowers because it's exhausted. This is a tired year. It's done a little better since I started pruning it annually, but I think perhaps I should also try fertilizing it a little.

The lilac in the back yard blooms enthusiastically each year. It is also literally the size of a tree, because nobody's tried to manage it for over a decade, and it was trying to compete with actual trees (far too closely placed!) for sunlight. Landlord Dude has expressed a vague intent to trim it back a little. We shall see if anything comes of that.

-----

2. Landlord Dude gave the front hedge a severe haircut last year, knocking it down from 4.5 feet (5 when it got out of hand) to 3 feet. The plant on the end of the row did not take this well. By this spring, all except one main stem/branch was dead. I spent part of last year snapping off dead wood as I found it, and I've been continuing the effort this spring. Today it occurred to me that dead wood has useless roots, and I could probably lever the dead bits completely out of the ground. So I did.

Then I chucked the wood onto the pile in the back yard where Landlord Dude chopped down one of the too-close trees and heavily trimmed another. He is attempting to turn the yard into a actual lawn, instead of a small garden and some bare dirt with a decrepit picnic table.

(This reminds me that I need to talk to Landlord Dude about the back deck while he's in a project mood, because some of the boards are not going to last another year. I do my best to keep it clean, but I don't think the wood was treated with much of anything and it's been harder each year to get rid of moss and opportunistic mulberry sprouts. By now, some of the wood is more dirt than cellulose.)

-----

3. I potted my four jalapeno seedlings a couple days ago, and took them outside on Sunday for a little afternoon adventure. I will take them out again tomorrow, providing the weather cooperates. My bell peppers should be ready to pot soon, along with two tomatoes. I will need to scrub out some containers for the tomatoes.

I should probably decide whether I'm growing zucchini or summer squash and get those seedlings started. I want to start them indoors and then gradually ease them outside before I plant them around the base of the raspberries. (Ugh, I will need to weed the garden patch. I hate weeding.)

I also need to start the spinach, but in that case I'm not bothering with peat cylinders -- I will just clean out two other containers and sow the seeds in rows.

-----

4. I bought an office plant for myself a couple months ago, because one of Miss Cactus's two plants had died despite my best efforts. (I am not good with bromeliads.) I have not been giving it particularly close attention, but I water it regularly and turn the pot 90 degrees each week, and it seems quite happy. This pleases me.

In other office plant news, I bought some supports for the office snake plant, but they're a little too tall and I keep forgetting to ask Maintenance if I can borrow some of their heavy-duty wire cutters and trim the supports by about six inches.

I also keep forgetting to bring in some extra potting soil and clips/hooks for Miss Cactus's other office plant, a very exuberant golden pothos which she had been training up the office wall. I don't want it to get completely out of hand, but I'm okay with letting it sprawl a bit more than it currently does, so long as I control the direction of that sprawl.

-----

5. I accidentally killed another clementine last week. Dammit.

I will learn how to handle citrus trees, so help me. It is just probably going to take years. *sigh*

surgery update, etc.

Dad arrived Thursday afternoon/evening, and was waiting in my apartment when I got home from work. We had steak, broccoli, and rice for dinner, because we could :)

My surgery was at 10:15am on Friday, with a check-in time of 8:45am. On the one hand, this meant I could get up at 7am and take my pills with some cranberry juice before the surgery. On the other hand, it meant I had two extra hours to get hungry without breakfast. But generally everything went smoothly and I now have a sore right hand wrapped up in a lot of bandages.

Dad and I installed my air conditioner Thursday evening while I still had two good hands. On Friday, after my post-surgery nap, I enlisted him as my hands and we slammed through 1) laundry, 2) groceries, and 3) buying potting soil for this year's container garden. We had yogurt for lunch because neither of us was particularly hungry at that point, and Chinese takeout for dinner. I had a strong allergic reaction to something Friday afternoon -- nose running like a faucet, repeated sneezing, itchy/watery eyes -- but I took some Benadryl and it did not continue through the night or recur this morning.

This morning Dad and I had scrambled eggs and banana bread for breakfast (because we could!), and he dropped me off at work where I expect I'll spend most of my day doing light emails and some leases, and I think one tour around 3:30pm.

I also tested my bridesmaid dress for Susan's wedding, and while I CAN still fit into it (a year and a bit after taking the measurements and placing my dress order), it's very tight and I need to lose some weight before the end of June.

Now I am going to rest my right arm on a long ice pack for a while. :)

[Fic] "untitled haunted painting story" -- original

I've been putting together my rather belated end-of-year writing roundup post, and realized I forgot to crosspost this snippet over here. So! Here is the opening of a story about two women and some haunted paintings, written December 11, 2020, in response to a [community profile] getyourwordsout challenge post. [515 words]

untitled haunted painting story

"What's with the creepy painting?" Gwen asked as she took her coat off just inside Isabel's front door. "I know we haven't talked art much, but I never figured you for an abstract horror person."

"It came with the apartment," Isabel said. "It's actually written into my lease -- no furnishings, but one painting in each room. They've all got little motion sensors and if I take them down I lose my damage deposit."

Gwen raised her eyebrows. "Really. And you agreed to that?"

Isabel told her the rental rate.

Gwen whistled. "Yeah, I'd put up with some creepy paintings for that kind of deal. But seriously, you can't move them at all? Like, not even turn them around so they're not, like, staring creepily at you every second? That one would put me off dinner on bad days, and if you've got another like it in your bedroom, how do you sleep?"

Isabel shrugged. "I pinned a wall hanging in front of the bedroom one -- honestly, sometimes I even forget it's there. And you can get used to all kinds of crazy things after a while. I heard they did an experiment in Russia once, parked a tank next to an office building, and it only took about a week for everyone to stop noticing it."

Gwen examined the painting again. It was very clearly not a picture of anything specific, and yet the shapeless colors somehow stared down at her with a knowing, hungry leer. "I don't think two hours between now and dinner is enough for me to ignore that. A tank would probably be easier."

"Fair enough. I'll chuck a towel over it or something; it'll be fine." Isabel suited action to words, and soon the wall held nothing more unnerving than a mint green hand towel with slightly frayed decorative stitching at the bottom edge.

Gwen eyed it mistrustfully nonetheless. "I still can't get past how weird that is. What kind of weird control freak sticks creepy art in every room and writes into the lease that you can't take it down, or even move it to a different wall?"

"Beats me, but Mrs. Bligh was very insistent," Isabel said as she returned to the kitchen side of the room and started pulling pots and pans out of a cupboard. "She said something about the house's first owner being an artist, blah blah terms of the will, blah blah historic value. And she looked so worried when I asked about moving them that I figured, whatever, it's just some ugly art. I can humor a sweet old lady."

"I still think it's creepy," Gwen said, but she let the subject drop and by the end of the evening had nearly forgotten about the paintings altogether. They were nothing more than the whim of an old woman with an idiosyncratic fixation on history and art provenance: weird and ugly, but harmless.

When she woke in the middle of the night with the bone-deep conviction that something malevolent was watching her from Isabel's bedroom wall, that rationalization melted down her spine like ice.

---------------------------------------------

To be continued...?

---------------------------------------------

Random trivia: When I was apartment hunting back in 2005, one place I toured was a ground floor unit in a subdivided house. It was in good shape and had a recently renovated back deck... but it came fully furnished, complete with somewhat questionable wall art, and the landlord insisted that all items remain exactly as they were set up. Tenants weren't even allowed to change their thermostats, which were locked inside tiny wire cages. The landlord himself lived in another state entirely -- Virginia or Florida or something -- so if you were hypothetically too hot or cold, you had to walk across the street to the house of one of his old friends, hope like hell she was home, and ask her to come unlock the thermostat and adjust the temperature -- and she couldn't even do that without calling the landlord and getting his permission! *headdesk*

So yeah, there are some people out there with serious control issues.

Also, needless to say, I did not rent that apartment.

this, that, and the other

Yesterday there were two rallies on the Commons -- one for Black Lives Matters (etc.), and one for the police -- which was a little worrying both on a Covid-19 front and also because of the potential for things to escalate when the two groups encountered each other. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to have gone beyond some yelling.

The BLM rally was in Bank Alley, a block and a half(ish) away from my office, and didn't disrupt my day at all. The Back the Blue rally, on the other hand, started right in front of my office while I was on my lunch break. People started crowding up against the office door, so I flipped the sign to "closed" and kept the doors locked until they moved east along the Commons around 2:45pm.

Other than that, it was a pretty calm day.

Today I have very deliberately done nothing in particular, aside from mail my November rent check. I got a call from Landlord Dude on Friday asking me to not rake the leaves this year because he feels weird paying somebody to do it. He doesn't exactly pay me, as such -- I've just been in the habit of knocking off $25 from my November or December rent (only one of them, not both) in recognition that raking is a lot of work and also I've had to buy yard waste bags and yard waste disposal tags. I started doing this because Landlord Dude kept not getting around to the yardwork and I do, you know, like having grass in the yard rather than letting the trees smother it. But I guess since he lives closer now (he used to live halfway up the lake, in Locke) he feels more able to handle the yardwork... or else he's going to rope his son into doing it, since I know he's had his son helping out with some mowing and roof work and such this summer and fall. *shrug* I told him I'd put my spare yard waste bags onto the porch and wash my hands of the issue.

...

If he still hasn't raked anything by mid-November, though, all bets are off. An unraked yard is just itchy, you know?

I have also signed up for Yuletide. That's always an interesting experience in years when I forget to participate in the nomination process -- I have to comb through the tagset looking for stuff I want to request, not just stuff I want to offer. But I found four things, all of which would make me very happy to receive, so it's all good. I have posted a placeholder letter and will get the real version up on... Tuesday, probably. Tomorrow will be busy.
