some thoughts on holiday exchange fics, while still in the anonymity phase

My Yuletide story for this year has been doing pretty well for itself! In fact, it's been doing better than a lot of my non-Yuletide stories do. I find this is often the case; unless you're writing for a really obscure canon, there is often a fair bit of pent-up demand for fic that results in intense appreciation for once-a-year stirrings of life in mostly nonexistent fandoms.

(This has been working in favor of one of my gifts -- Threads from the Confused Distaff of Memory, a wonderful Darkangel Trilogy fic about Eryka in Pirs after her husband's death -- but not so much for the other, which makes me sad. Listen, That First Blush of Love (roses always wilt) is a story wherein Karla from the Black Jewels series gets a happy romantic/sexual relationship in her teens, before the drama of Queen of the Darkness goes down. It is excellent femslash! With people working to communicate openly and effectively! And Karla unapologetically being in charge of her country! Seriously, people, what are you waiting for???)

Anyway, my still-anonymous assignment is the only Yuletide fic I wrote this year. I did mean to write a treat, but stuff got in the way, as it often does. With a pinch of luck I will manage to repurpose the idea as a New Year's Resolution fic in January. *crosses fingers*

The main reason I didn't write any treats is, of course, my Daredevil Secret Santa fic, which got a bit out of hand. *wry* That one was much more of a stretch for me as a writer -- to the point where only Vicky's timely advice saved me from my perpetual failtasticness on a certain front, which probably disguises my authorship a bit.

(I love my sister dearly. She is, was, and always will be my best editor, and she's gotten even better since she started writing ebook romances as a secondary career.)

Anyway, if you guess either of my fics, I will write you a ficlet of at least 500 words in a fandom of your choice. The Yuletide one is for a canon that I have neither written in before nor talked about on this journal, though I feel it's fairly obviously in my voice and deals with several of my pet writerly preoccupations. The Daredevil one also deals with several of my writerly preoccupations, though slightly different ones from the Yuletide fic, and, as I said above, it's a bit less nakedly in my own voice.

...

You know, I don't think anybody has ever even tried guessing my holiday exchange fics. I might get more nibbles if I made a similar offer for NFE -- smaller pool of participants, for a start -- but eh, whatever.

stuff done: Friday-Monday

1. Added the necessary scene to my DDSS fic, researched a couple factual issues, and made some preliminary edits. Then I got Vicky to look over the beta draft and made a bunch more edits in response to her advice. (I probably would have made even more than that, but the archive went live three hours early so oh well, maybe after they're no longer anonymous.)

2. Went with Vicky and Mom to see A Child's Christmas in Wales as performed by the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival... oh wait, excuse me, the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey. (I always forget they got fancy. My image of them is frozen around the mid-90s, back when I was part of their Junior Corps: aka, when I did unpaid summer ushering and concessions work for them in return for free drama lessons. I quit when they started requiring payment for the lessons while still not giving any monetary compensation for the ushering and concessions work.) The performance was very good. We had seen it at least once before, many years ago, but none of us remembered more than vague impressions so it was effectively a new experience. We were all pleasantly surprised by how many songs there were -- really, it's as much a musical as a play.

23. Started working through the DDSS archive. Hopefully I will finish that on Tuesday and can then get properly started on the Yuletide and Yuletide Madness archives.

Merry Christmas (to them as celebrates it)

Quick update!

I got two (!!!) Yuletide fics and a really long Daredevil Secret Santa fic. They are all lovely. I have kudos'ed them all.

I am also veyr tired and kind of tipsy on champagne cocktails, so I am not leaving comment tonight (because comments should be coherent and I am kind of really really not right now, also spelling is hard) but I will do that tomorrow morning.

In themeantime, I leave you links!

-----

That First Blush of Love (roses always wilt): Karla takes back control from her uncle, and with Morton, she starts establishing herself as Territory Queen.

You'd think that she'd be too busy for anything else. And it wasn't as if she expected anything else. After all, she never once felt attraction the way anyone else said they felt it.

Until, of course, she meets someone. And suddenly, she realizes she's not broken, or different - or even too busy. She's having the time of her life. (Black Jewels, 5,074 words, f/f, mature)

-----

Threads from the Confused Distaff of Memory: Women born of Isternes are slaves to no man. Eryka may be locked in a tower, but she will not wait helplessly for someone else to save her. (Darkangel Trilogy, 3,414 words, gen, not rated)

-----

The Very First Case of Page & Murdock: Karen meets Matt in her first semester at law school. Foggy is their first suspect. (Daredevil (MCU), 10,400 words, gen w/ background relationships, teen+)

stuff done: Sunday-Thursday

1. Washed laundry, dried laundry, put laundry away.

2. Changed linens.

3. Took recycling bins to the curb for pickup. Brought them back in Monday morning, and consolidated the stuff that didn't get taken (because it was frozen to the bins, argh) into a single bin.

And now I think I will try tackling that missing scene in my DDSS fic, because it will be easier for Vicky to edit a complete work than a work with a gaping hole in the middle. *wry*

wherein Liz (conditionally) defeats Yuletide

Victory! Yuletide fic is done and posted.

There was an analogy that occurred to me around 6pm as being wonderfully apropos, but trying to fit it in wound up derailing the emotional through-line horribly, so I cut that attempt back out again. I kinda-sorta finagled it into a different location in a different form, but this version is not nearly as direct (or imagery-rich) as before, which is a little sad, but hey, that situation is exactly what the phrase 'kill your darlings' is meant for. *wry*

...

I should probably get the story beta read. The problem is, what I really need is a canon and characterization check, and this canon is... not obscure obscure -- I would be willing to bet that several people in my circle have consumed it at some point -- but not something I think a lot of people have detailed knowledge of right at their fingertips, and obviously asking would be a dead giveaway.

Presumably this is when I learn to use the Yuletide chat thingywhatsit and try to find a hippo? Ugh. That kind of technology never wants to work for me.

Tomorrow, I suppose.

(I mean, if anyone is willing to offer sight unseen, I will tell you the canon in private and you can decide from there whether it's something you are familiar enough with to offer informed commentary, but that's not a very reliable method of finding editors.)

writing down to deadline, what else is new

I fixed the problem with my Yuletide fic that had me stalled out for a while, and am past minimum wordcount, but I kind of lost the thread of the... it's too short for a plot; what's the word I want instead... lost the through-line at some point and am not entirely sure how to bring the story back on track so the ending resonates with the beginning.

Oh well, I have twelve more hours. I'll figure it out. :)

16. Set up my drying rack as a humidifier, by which I mean I soaked two towels (oddly-sized misfits, kept for this specific purpose) until they were sopping wet, and then hung them over the rack and let evaporation make my apartment slightly less bone-dry. This process is not completely effective and needs to be repeated every three to eight hours for the duration of winter, but it's effective enough, and a lot cheaper than buying and running an electric humidifier to boot.

And on that note, I will go soak the towels again and then go to bed, because I have work in the morning.

stuff done: Saturday-Thursday

1. Completed five more NYS tax training modules, go me. \o/

2. Bought a set of non-denominational holiday cards for next year so I won't have to worry about that next fall. It is always a bit of a struggle to find something that A) includes enough cards in the set, B) doesn't look hideous, and C) isn't ruinously expensive. I can get actual Christmas-themed ones every other year, since a set of twenty leaves me with a few leftovers, but I send cards to a few people who specifically aren't Christian and don't celebrate Christmas, so non-denominational is important.

3. Took recycling bins to the curb for pickup on Sunday night.

Obviously I fed and walked Dottie every day; take that as read. :) Beyond that, though...

1. Confirmed the two days I am swapping with my coworker. (Hmm. Miss Cactus, maybe? Not for any personality reasons; she just grows a lot of succulents as a hobby.) Also wrote down my vacation day schedule for November and December, and passed it on to Mom for use in family holiday planning.

more items under the cut )

I also got through several chapters of rereading for my Yuletide assignment, and am noticing all kinds of layers to the work in question that I missed on my first two times through. (The first time, it's because the cover art and back cover text gave me slightly misaimed expectations of what type of story I was in for, and I was hurrying ahead to reach elements that never really appeared the way I thought they were going to. The second time I think it's just that I was relatively young and therefore lacking in a certain sense of perspective, and also that I wasn't reading with a specific eye out for details because I was not intending to use it as source material for fanfic.)

Yuletide assignment thoughts; also, dogsitting

I got my Yuletide assignment (wow the new matching code is fast!!!) and... I think I may be writing for a fandom other than the one my recipient and I matched on, because while I can write the character and story they requested in that fandom, I am much more intrigued/excited by their prompts in two other fandoms. I hadn't offered those fandoms because the stories/characters I felt I could handle were too limited to make it practical, but these prompts happen to fall squarely in my personal wheelhouse, so. :)

*grabs one canon off my own bookshelf and makes note to hit the library for the other on Thursday or Friday*

-----

In other news, I successfully dognapped Dottie over the weekend and she seems to be settling in all right. Upstairs Neighbor E (and maybe Mini Upstairs Neighbor C, her daughter) will be taking her out for her afternoon piddle break on Tues. the 11th, Sat. the 15th, and Tues. the 18th; I will abuse my lunch break on Wed. the 12th and Wed. the 19th when she is busy with other things. And one or both of my parents will drive up on Fri. the 21st to retrieve Dottie once all their home renovations are finished.

stuff done: Monday-Friday

1. Photographed my peppers. Posted about them on Tumblr. (Did not crosspost to DW because I ran out of spoons, whoops. I will try to correct that this weekend. Or maybe Monday.) I also chopped up and froze a pepper that was developing a fungal infection -- obviously I cut off and threw away the nasty parts.

more items under the cut )

17. Rearranged two of my kitchen cupboards to put some things I use frequently (tealight candles and scented wax melts) within easy reach and put some things I only use once or twice a year (trivets and decorative hot pads) up where I need to stand on a chair to reach them, because obviously having them in the opposite places was logistically stupid.

And now it is time for me to go to bed, because I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow.

Dear Yuletide Writer 2016

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Hi, and thank you in advance for writing a story for me! I'm pretty easy to please -- unless you write a context-free sex scene, I'll be thrilled just to get a fic in one of the fandoms I asked for. *grin* But I realize that's not terribly helpful, so here's the (very!) long version. (I am sorry for the tl;dr, but I like to talk about things I love and I figure more details are better than fewer.)

---------------

General Information )

Okay. On to specific fandoms.

---------------

The Lions of Al-Rassan )

Darkangel Trilogy )

Saga of the Skolian Empire )

Daredevil (Comics) )

Black Jewels [NSFW] )

And that is that. Thank you again, and happy writing!

wherein Liz ponders her Yuletide options

Sorting through the Yuletide tagset to figure out what I am comfortable offering (and what I might want to request beyond the three fandoms I personally nominated) always takes about ten times longer than I expect when I start the process. What can I say; I like to be thorough.

After extensive perusal, I have compiled a list of things I think I would be both able to write for and interested in writing for. Now I need to trim it down by asking myself exactly how sure I am of both factors for each canon in question. (And in The Dark Is Rising, I need to decide whether to limit my character choices, because on the one hand, I'd prefer not to write a story focused on Merriman Lyon, but on the other, I'm perfectly willing to use him as a side character in a story centered around anyone else and I suspect I may be shutting myself out of some interesting prompts if I do exclude him. *weighs chances, remains undecided*)

Other people nominated Black Jewels and Karla is one of the characters in the tagset, so I can make my Karla-has-a-sex-life prompt again; perhaps this is the year it will be filled! I might request a 616 Daredevil story again as well, because even though I received two awesome stories for that fandom last year, there are all kinds of options to play with. Alas, nobody nominated The Dispossessed so I can't make my perennial request for literally anything about that book, but I received a lovely story in response to that prompt back in 2012 so I am not heartbroken or anything. And four or five requests is plenty, really.

...

Okay, I'm going to take my latest batch of veggie sidedish out of the crockpot and go to bed now.

Liz's continuing computer woes

Another quick update!

I ordered a replacement laptop battery and power cord from Amazon; they should arrive on Tuesday. I will try to watch some tutorial videos about the replacement process on Monday, so I'll have a better idea of what to do with them. With luck, I will have a functional computer again by Wednesday night.

If not, I have asked my parents if I can borrow their dinky notebook computer while I turn the problem over to professionals. So I guess I'll email or call them after my attempt at playing tech repairperson and they will either bring or not bring the notebook on Wednesday, depending.

In the meantime, I read what I can on my phone. *sigh*

-----

In completely unrelated news, all three of my Yuletide nominations (and all four characters for each fandom) were approved with no problems. Two went through within the first couple hours, while the third didn't go until later that day, presumably because two of the characters I picked are very minor and have not yet appeared in/been tagged in any of the extant fanfic on AO3. So I know what three of my requests will be, and I'll decide whether I even want to make a fourth or fifth once the full tagset is revealed.

1. Checked this year's Porchfest schedule to figure out when it might be safe to leave on Sunday. I think the best plan is to slip away during the gap between the 12pm and 1pm performances. It will be a small gap, but if I miss it I'll be stuck until 2pm and that's not ideal.

wherein Liz thinks out loud

My list of writing projects, now that I'm done with Ladystuck Remix and WIP Big Bang:

1. Narnia Fic Exchange, due 8/31. I still haven't picked a prompt, let alone started writing. (This is what happens when all the options sound brilliant!) I will try to have something selected and outlined by Sunday. I may also be beta-reading for some other people.

2. Three Cotton Candy Bingo mini-ficlet prompt meme requests. (Tumblr mirror.) I'm stuck on the first one because I think it wants to be porn, and, well, me and porn? Not the greatest of friends. Also the terms of the prompt -- 'using the Sharingan after Sasuke came back' -- require me to deal with late Naruto canon, and I don't really want to put in the work to figure out a better resolution to Team 7's various emotional arcs. Nrgh. (I'd avoid the issue by setting it in the Tides AU, but I suspect I'd get hung up trying to make detailed plot outlines for the two sequels I never wrote.) On the other hand, if I'm writing straight-up porn, I don't really need to explain anything, right? The term PWP exists for a reason...

(FYI, you can still go make requests for the remaining three Cotton Candy prompts, either via a comment on Dreamwidth or via my Tumblr askbox. I will probably take several weeks to write the fic, but I won't forget.)

3. I have no idea if Remix Redux is actually happening this year. The mods made a preliminary announcement, and then... *crickets chirp*

4. Yuletide nominations will open in a few weeks. I should probably start thinking about that.

...Actually, let me hash that out right now. I will always make requests for The Dispossessed and The Lions of Al-Rassan if they're available, but do I care enough to use my nominations on them? The former, at least, seems to often get taken care of by other people, but I know the latter has vanished sometimes when I haven't nominated it myself. *ponders options* I think other people will probably take care of the Black Jewels series, and even nominate Karla because she's well-liked. (I still want my Karla-has-a-happy-lesbian-sex-life fic, dammit.) I want Syllva and Eryka to be character options for the Darkangel trilogy, so I'd better nominate them because I don't think anyone else will. I also think I might go for that Saga of the Skolian Empire prompt as well this year, so I'd better make sure Rocalisa is on the character list.

So if we still get three noms per person, it looks like I will be asking for Al-Rassan, the Darkangel triology, and the Skolians. Okay. Good. Now I can stop thinking about that. Back to my list of writing projects!

5. I got a Daredevil Bingo card. I am going to ignore it until at least mid-September. (You can claim specific prompts, though! Here is the information post (yes, it's the same post as my current Cotton Candy Bingo request meme) and you can leave me a prompt request via Dreamwidth comment or via Tumblr askbox. Just, you know, don't expect fast results.)

6. I should really finish the five remaining parts of "The Transient and the Eternal" now that I'm crossposting the extant component fics to AO3.

7. No, I have not forgotten about "Guardian." I never forget about any of my WIPs, even if I've ignored them for years. Trust me on this. :)

YULETIDE!!!

Late post, because yesterday turned out busier than I expected and then this afternoon my family went to see a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor, but anyway. I got two gifts this year, both in the same fandom -- Daredevil (Comics) -- and they are both WONDERFUL!

I asked for a story about Karen, Kirsten, and Elektra that did NOT focus on Matt, and said that since they make a really odd and hard to wrangle character combo, using all three was not necessary. In the event, I got one fic about Karen and Kirsten and another about Kirsten and Elektra. The former also makes excellent use of Foggy, while the latter makes excellent use of Lady Bullseye and Kirsten's roommate Dina, and has a glorious minor role for Doctor Strange being... well... himself. (The 616 universe can be marvelously bizarre. *grin*)

Go! Read! Tell my mystery authors they are awesome!

things and stuff

In no particular order:

1. I have a job interview scheduled for Tuesday morning. This is in relation to the civil service job I mentioned nearly a month ago. I applied in mid-November, had my exam in late November, received my exam results last week, and now finally get an interview. Bureaucracy moves slowly! I am not the only person being interviewed, of course, but I really hope I get the job. It would remove about 70% of my current stressors in one fell swoop.

cut on general principle )

-----

2. Still working my way through online training for Not the IRS, blargh. Oh well, at least I get paid for it! They're making a first tentative January schedule this weekend, though if I do get the civil service job, obviously I will have to change my hours.

-----

3. I hate Yuletide, I hate Yuletide, I hate Yuletide. I am about halfway to the minimum wordcount, but not remotely halfway through my planned story. *headdesk*

Ah well, I think I know where to butcher it in order to get a coherent thing posted by the deadline, if necessary, and then I'll try to get the extended proper version up before the archive goes live next week.

-----

4. Bought gifts for Mom and Vicky on Tuesday, which I will wrap sometime this weekend. Thank goodness for Ithaca's weird little specialty shops on and around the Commons. I also bought little extras for Mom, Dad, and Vicky, got Mom to buy a thing in my name for Dad (which I will wrap and pay her back for when I get to NJ), and went halves(ish) with Vicky on a gift for Aunt Cara. And I got all my holiday cards mailed out last Saturday, which is always a good feeling.

My card list has changed a bit over the years as my older relatives have died and I've tacked some former coworkers on. I've also started sending cards to Cat and Susan's parents addressing them by their first names, which feels kind of weird -- making the shift from 'my friends' parents' to 'adults I know as a fellow adult' -- but has not caused the sky to fall, so eh, whatever.

(I duck the issue by not using names at all when directly addressing them, because that is still a step too weird for me, but at least I'm not calling them Mr. and Mrs. M (or G) anymore. Progress by inches!)

-----

5. You know, screw it, I think I'm going to post ch. 16 of "Guardian" on my journal tonight even though I haven't finished editing and reposting the previous chapters on AO3. That will give me time to get a little feedback before I stick ch 16 up on a permanent archive, and I have never claimed to be a very patient person. When I finish a thing, I want a reaction NOW.

So yeah, gimme a few minutes and I'm going to do that.

belated Yuletide assignment reaction post

My reaction upon receiving my Yuletide assignment was, more or less, "Oh, okay; I can write that; that's easy." And then secondarily, "I wonder if I should maybe ask the mods to ask my recipient if I can do [thing], because while [thing] doesn't exactly match the 'prompt' part of the prompt, it does match some stuff in the 'letter' part that's appended to each prompt, and while I like the prompt a lot, I like [thing] even more. Because of reasons."

...

You know, I think I will email the mods after all. There is no harm in asking, and then I will know for sure one way or the other.
