Today is NFE reveal day! I wrote An Outstretched Hand for [archiveofourown.org profile] redsnake05.

---------------

An Outstretched Hand: The giants came in the summer of the seventh year, in the long golden days between planting and harvest, when the people of Narnia worked to lay the bones of their new land: roads and wells, fords and harbors, and towers along the borders for they knew that an Evil walked abroad and their protection would not last forever. (1,825 words)

---------------

[archiveofourown.org profile] redsnake05 asked for a story about Frank, Helen, and/or Fledge, either in England or in the early years of Narnia, and for once I managed to fill a prompt pretty much exactly as intended. *wry*

You can tell this is my work because it's mostly about worldbuilding, and also all the OCs are female. It also fits neatly into my established timeline about Jadis's actions between MN and LWW, wherein she starts by going north and messing about with various tribes/clans of giants she finds there.

Joyous Gard is a bit of headcanon that I don't think ever made it into any of my stories before. To summarize, I am a little ambivalent about Cair Paravel. See, I sort of loosely headcanon Narnia as being a semi-sentient extension of the Deep Magic, and the four thrones at Cair Paravel are a manifestation of that magic. I am less sure if the castle itself is entirely a magical creation, though I am sure parts of it were not built entirely naturally. (I have a partially-written story exploring some of that, which has stalled out mostly because I need to solidify the worldbuilding before I can write the actual people-doing-stuff elements.) Anyway, whatever Cair Paravel's exact origins, I figure Frank and Helen's castle was somewhere else, probably inland, closer to the geographic center of Narnia. And I further figure they named it after a famous magical castle from England, because why not.

Also Joyous Gard is just a really great name and I steal really great names when I can. :)

Anyway, I wanted this story to be a little longer, and maybe get into some of the actual negotiations for the giants' settlement in Narnia, and a discussion of Helen and Frank's desire for children, and some more of Frank and Helen's personal history with England's wars and colonial empire and stuff, but, you know, depression. *sigh* So it's shorter and brighter than it might otherwise have been, but I don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing or just a difference between intention and result. There is, after all, just as much need for hope and light as for explorations of shadow.

And nothing says I can't write more about this area some other day...

So both the Narnia Fic Exchange and Remix Revival went live on Sunday, and I want to tell you about my lovely gifts! (Edited 9/25/17 to include author names!)

Summary: Charn feeds upon magic, and magic feeds upon Charn, down the ages in the long, slow death of a world.

Broken If Revealed (The File It Under the Letter D Remix) (3114 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] significantowl
Fandom: Daredevil (TV)
Rating: General Audiences

Relationships: Matt Murdock & Franklin "Foggy" Nelson & Karen Page
Characters: Matt Murdock, Franklin "Foggy" Nelson, Karen Page

Summary: In a file folder buried deep in her desk, Karen has contingency plans, a how-to guide for keeping Nelson and Murdock afloat if she's gone. When Foggy accidentally uncovers them, a few more secrets are revealed along the way.

This is a remix of Broken If Revealed, which swaps Karen and Foggy so he's the one discovering her contingency folder, and which does some really excellent character exploration and compare/contrast between Karen and Matt.

You should go read both of them and compliment the authors! :D

I got my NFE assignment, and it is beautiful. :DDD

I am more drawn to some of the prompts than others, but even the ones that speak less personally to me are interesting, and they're all broad enough to allow for many approaches while also specific enough that I won't be floundering. (This is a neat trick and I suspect I never quite manage it when writing my own prompts, alas.)

I have other things with more urgent deadlines, so I will not be starting work immediately, but it's always nice to have something exciting/intriguing ticking over in the back of my mind. :)

Today is the last day to sign up for the 2017 Narnia Fic Exchange!

Come play! The NFE is a very low-pressure exchange that produces a bunch of really awesome fic in response to fun and intriguing prompts.

Even if you can't sign up, do keep an eye out for the Madness round, where you can sort through all the prompts and write ficlets that don't need to meet the minimum length requirement. :)

This morning I 'and then'ed my way through more of the space battle -- the Enterprise has just arrived in-system!

I have also been working on the first of the mini-ficlet prompt meme fills, which... uh... has gotten slightly out of hand and also seems to bear less and less relation to the bingo square part of the prompt, whoops. But I persevere!

...

In other news, I signed up for the Narnia Fic Exchange ([community profile] narniaexchange) and you should too!

I am also seriously considering signing up for Remix Revival ([community profile] remixrevival), which is running this year as a fill-in for the tragically defunct Remix Redux. I mean, on the one hand, REMIX!!! On the other, oh god time management... *dithers*

Note: I am repurposing my stock Yuletide letter here, which is why some of the sections may seem slightly off-topic for a single fandom exchange.

Hi, and thank you in advance for writing a story for me! I'm pretty easy to please -- unless you write context-free porn, I'll be thrilled just to get a response to one of my prompts. *grin* But I realize that's not terribly helpful, so here's the (very!) long version. (I am sorry for the tl;dr, but I like to talk about things I love and I figure more details are better than fewer.)

1. Photographed my peppers. Posted about them on Tumblr. (Did not crosspost to DW because I ran out of spoons, whoops. I will try to correct that this weekend. Or maybe Monday.) I also chopped up and froze a pepper that was developing a fungal infection -- obviously I cut off and threw away the nasty parts.

17. Rearranged two of my kitchen cupboards to put some things I use frequently (tealight candles and scented wax melts) within easy reach and put some things I only use once or twice a year (trivets and decorative hot pads) up where I need to stand on a chair to reach them, because obviously having them in the opposite places was logistically stupid.

And now it is time for me to go to bed, because I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow.

Today is NFE reveal day! I wrote two stories this year: my assignment and one tiny Madness ficlet. I will talk about each in a separate post.

enchantments: One night, the Lady will let him out of the chair and not recast her spell. Rilian fears that day more than anything. Dark. (450 words, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] Komadori)

-----

I felt kind of bad for writing dark!fic as a gift when Komadori hadn't specifically asked for dark!fic... so I wrote her more dark!fic as a Madness treat. *headdesk* Yes, that was an excellent plan. There was no way it could possibly go wrong.

On the other hand, I think the resulting ficlet holds up fairly well for something written in half an hour. It's a dark what-if style of AU, where Rilian made one different choice from canon and everything consequently went straight to hell for him, for his would-be rescue party, and for Narnia in general. (The Lady of the Green Kirtle is perfectly pleased with the outcome, of course.)

...

I think the takeaway from my NFE participation this year is that I should probably avoid signing up for exchanges when I'm in a protracted depressive episode. Not only does that make writing difficult, it also seems to affect the tone and style of what I end up producing. *sigh*

This was my assignment!

As I said in my post when the collections opened, I didn't even try for anonymity this year. I had sort of wanted to write a Lucy/Sea Girl story (which is a concept I clearly like or I wouldn't keep asking people to write it for me!) but that required a lot more creativity than I could dredge up over the past few months, so I went with something that I already had mostly laid out... which is also not what I ended up writing. (The story of my creative life could probably be summarized as follows: 'That was not what I meant to write, but I think it came out okay despite that.')

1. Finished the Not the IRS onboarding process, which is basically logging onto a site and electronically signing a bunch of forms (some of them have a few options to fill out first). Because this is my second year as a tax preparer, I am now eligible for... it's not technically commissions, because the structure's a little different, but essentially it's commissions, if I bring in money over my hourly wages for the pay period in question. Probably I won't earn any, because I am new and have no established client base, but I guess it's nice to know the option is there?

And now I should probably get to bed, because I have work tomorrow. :)
