This should be the last of tonight's internet housekeeping: my 2024 Narnia Fic Exchange story, written (again) for [archiveofourown.org profile] Lizzen.

Two Through the Door (1480 words) by Elizabeth Culmer
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Edmund Pevensie & Lucy Pevensie
Characters: Edmund Pevensie, Lucy Pevensie, Jadis | The White Witch
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence

Summary: Edmund is a little faster through the wardrobe and finds Lucy before the Witch.

---------------

Another fairly self-explanatory summary, I feel? Anyway canon divergence -- or as I like to call it, kicking canon in the knees at a judiciously chosen point -- is my favorite type of AU and I am always pleased at the chance to indulge in it. :) This fic also doubles a little bit as an Edmund character study.

Internet housekeeping continues! This was my 2023 Narnia Fic Exchange entry, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] Lizzen.

Ashes (3748 words) by Elizabeth Culmer
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Jadis | The White Witch & Jadis' Sister
Characters: Jadis | The White Witch, Jadis' Sister (Narnia)
Additional Tags: Charn, Worldbuilding, Backstory, Slavery, Murder, Psychopathology & Sociopathy, War, Fictional Religion & Theology

Summary: Cynara's army breached the city walls of Charn at dawn on the Day of Ashes.

---------------

Someday I do still intend to write the full story of Jadis and Cynara's final conflict, but I got tangled up in battle tactics and also realized I would need to create so much court politics, so I hit a decent stopping point and quit while I was temporarily ahead. *wry*

Anyway, it is my firm belief that while Jadis's sister would have been less disastrous for both the universe in general and Charn in specific, she still wasn't remotely a good person -- just better at realizing that the world is where she keeps all her stuff, and that it's easier to rule if your subjects feel like you see them as people, not toys.

Note: I am repurposing my stock Yuletide letter here, which is why some of the sections may seem slightly off-topic for a single fandom exchange.

Hi, and thank you in advance for writing a story for me! I'm pretty easy to please -- unless you write context-free porn, I'll be thrilled just to get a response to one of my prompts. *grin* But I realize that's not terribly helpful, so here's the (very!) long version. (I am sorry for the tl;dr, but I like to talk about things I love and I figure more details are better than fewer.)

Long time no write!

All my energy has been draining away to other sites lately, probably because most of what I have to say is either images (I've continued to work on cross-stitch projects) or responses to Tumblr posts that would be weird to post over here without context.

Anyway, work continues onward. I have been having some issues at Not the IRS because corporate has been pushing our manager to cut hours while simultaneously pushing for us to complete more returns, which, um, there is a certain logical disconnect there. Tonight I plan to go into the office and check on some in-progress returns without actually punching in because I am trying to communicate with clients and don't want to leave them hanging until my next scheduled shift on Sunday afternoon. This is, frankly, ridiculous, but I'm not sure what else I can do -- I can't exactly access our secure messaging system from home!

Meanwhile at the rental company, we have finally gotten shot of a disaster tenant who was creating intense and poisonous interpersonal tension among the tenants of the first floor of our boarding house style property. It wasn't entirely her fault -- the other tenants certainly contributed! -- but she was clearly the inciting factor and could not follow our repeated requests to please stop interacting with the other tenants, don't try to do them favors, you know it always goes bad, for your own sake just BACK THE FUCK OFF. *headdesk* She had a family crisis, moved out abruptly after a VERY dramatic weekend, and sent a moderately incoherent email in which she stated she did not intend to return. So we took her at her word and changed the locks.

Hopefully we will now be able to actually rent rooms on that floor again.

Hmm.

Oh! And in fandom new, the Narnia Spring Bacchanal Prompfest (aka Narnia After Dark) is now open for prompts. You can read more details here on the NFE journal: https://narniaexchange.dreamwidth.org/150860.html. Or if you just want to jump directly to AO3, here's the link to the collection: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/Narnia_After_Dark_2023/profile

I am trying to catch up on some internet housekeeping, so here is an absurdly belated Narnia Fic Exchange reveal post!

I wrote a story for [archiveofourown.org profile] Starbrow:

The Pleasures of the Flesh (1827 words) by Elizabeth Culmer
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis, Six of Crows Series - Leigh Bardugo
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Inej Ghafa & Susan Pevensie
Characters: Inej Ghafa, Susan Pevensie
Additional Tags: Crossovers & Fandom Fusions, Golden Age (Narnia), Recovery, Pre-Relationship

Summary: The Wraith arrived in Port Paravel on the coattails of a late March storm, gliding into harbor as the dregs of the gale spent themselves on the palisaded shore and trickled away in skirls of fog and aggravation.

---------------
---------------

I probably had relevant things to say about my writing process for this story back in September, but alas, I have forgotten most of them in the intervening months. Mostly I was pleased that I could finally fill a crossover prompt! Generally the crossovers people request for NFE are fandoms I either don't know at all, don't know well enough to write, or am not interested in writing (either at all, or just not in the requested context), which has been a minor sorrow of mine for some years. But! This time I had the relevant knowledge and interest (Inej, my beloved!), and I took gleeful advantage.

As always, I wanted the story to be longer but ran out of time, alas.

Work started out well, but then devolved into a puddle of ARGH in the late afternoon.

In summary, when I inspected an apartment around noon and marked the turnover as complete, I failed to raise all the blinds. When I came back some hours later to stage the apartment in prep for photos and videos, which should have been nice and simple, I did raise the blinds...

...and discovered that the outgoing tenant had plastered the entire bottom right quarter of a giant picture window with some kind of heat reflective product. It was sort of like... hmm... like someone had taken a giant reflective mylar sheet, cut it into 8x10 inch blocks, and coated one side with a quarter-inch thick layer of pitch or asphalt. And then slapped the pitch/asphalt sides against the window until they made a sort of pitch/mylar quilt. The slabs felt kind of like bricks as I peeled them off, they smelled godawful, and they left the most hideous residue all over the glass. Plus there were random double-sided tape strips underneath the goo (and all over the bottom left quarter of the window), as well as some generic puffy adhesive strips for good measure.

Who the fuck DOES THAT???

And how did the cleaners MISS IT???

(Also, did Ms. Random Numbers bill them for that? I need to double-check with her tomorrow.)

So yeah, trying to scrape that off and wipe it clear ate the remainder of my day. I finally gave up around 6:15pm and bought a container of Zippo lighter fluid on my way back to the office to sign out, because lighter fluid can work miracles getting tape residue off of glass -- hopefully it will work for this gunk as well.

I am going in early tomorrow morning because I have three apartments I need to slam through before noon and I need every spare minute I can grab. UGH.

In completely unrelated news, I beta'ed someone's NFE fic tonight and I think y'all are going to love it. :)
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
So today I spent 11am to 3pm staging apartments, taking photos and videos, and unstaging apartments. I also reviewed a bunch of packages lying around the mail room of one building in order to weed out items sent to tenants who have already moved out.

The heat was not quite as horrendous as yesterday, but very draining nonetheless, and my feet are still screaming bloody murder at me nearly five hours later. :(

Still, victory is sweet!

Tonight I have unboxed my newest tiny citrus tree, which will get a couple weeks to recover from shipment before I move it into a more permanent pot.

I have also received my NFE assignment, which is delicious and full of fascinating possibilities! >:D

...And I am still drained as hell, and will probably collapse into bed around 9pm, because holy FUCK I am tired and out of spoons.

(My peppers and zucchini, incidentally, should no longer be wilting because I watered the hell out of them when I got home from work. In theory Ithaca will get rain Sunday night, but it's been weirdly dry for the past few weeks, and I am not holding my breath.)

Today is NFE reveal day! I wrote two stories this year: one assignment and one pinch hit. I will talk about each in a separate post. :)

Take with you the swiftest of your wolves (1354 words) by Elizabeth Culmer
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Maugrim (Narnia), Eadhild (OFC)
Additional Tags: Book/Movie: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Wolves, secret police & enforcers, Fictional Religion & Theology

This was my pinch-hit, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] Syrena_of_the_lake.

I'm just going to copypaste my own brainstorming here, to give a sense of my thought process:

Look, you cannot wave fictional theology/ideology under my nose and not expect me to leap at the chance to play around. :DDD
