Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

Note: Three months late, but look! I wrote a thing! :D Also, insofar as this has a canon setting, it's in a happy future sometime post-Defenders.

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Hi, and thank you in advance for writing a story for me! I'm pretty easy to please -- unless you write a context-free sex scene, I'll be thrilled just to get a fic in one of the fandoms I asked for. *grin* But I realize that's not terribly helpful, so here's the (very!) long version. (I am sorry for the tl;dr, but I like to talk about things I love and I figure more details are better than fewer.)

So both the Narnia Fic Exchange and Remix Revival went live on Sunday, and I want to tell you about my lovely gifts! (Edited 9/25/17 to include author names!)

-----

Words Against the Tide (2834 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] ViaLethe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Jadis | The White Witch, Jadis' Sister (Narnia), Original Characters
Additional Tags: Worldbuilding, Charn, Backstory, Magic, Blood Magic

Summary: Charn feeds upon magic, and magic feeds upon Charn, down the ages in the long, slow death of a world.

This is chilling and gorgeous and an all-too-plausible look at both the origin of the Deplorable Word and the decay of a once-bright world and people.

Broken If Revealed (The File It Under the Letter D Remix) (3114 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] significantowl
Fandom: Daredevil (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Matt Murdock & Franklin "Foggy" Nelson & Karen Page
Characters: Matt Murdock, Franklin "Foggy" Nelson, Karen Page
Additional Tags: Post-Season/Series 01, Reveal, Friendship, Secrets, Office, Remix, POV Foggy Nelson

Summary: In a file folder buried deep in her desk, Karen has contingency plans, a how-to guide for keeping Nelson and Murdock afloat if she's gone. When Foggy accidentally uncovers them, a few more secrets are revealed along the way.

This is a remix of Broken If Revealed, which swaps Karen and Foggy so he's the one discovering her contingency folder, and which does some really excellent character exploration and compare/contrast between Karen and Matt.

You should go read both of them and compliment the authors! :D

Point 1: I am making good progress with my WIP Big Bang fic, but it is A) LONG and B) going to need heavy revisions once I do reach the end. I will not get the gratification of posting it and receiving feedback for another whole month.

Point 2: I am not terribly good at delayed gratification.

Solution: Mini-ficlet prompt meme time!

You know the basic drill by now, yes? Pick a square from one of my prompt bingo cards (or what the heck, let's be flexible: for this round, I will also take random words/phrases of your choice!), add one to three characters plus a scenario, and I will write you a ficlet of at least... mmm... let's say 250 words.

Here is my Genprompt Bingo card. For those who prefer lists to graphics, the open squares are: Midnight, Pipes and Beer, Fundamental Particles, Introspection, Light-Hearted, Holiday Cottages, Heart on Sleeve, WILD CARD, Suicide, Another Year Older: Birthdays, Three Wishes, The Age of Reason, Steadfast, Second Person Narration, Space AU, Takeout, Apocalypse

For those who are okay with single-fandom prompts, I also have a Daredevil Bingo card, though past experience suggests most of you don't share that fandom with me, alas. But I will totally write for those prompts... except role reversal or AU: A/B/O squares, since I have plans for those which I will get to in due time, mwahahahaha.

And I have one remaining Cotton Candy Bingo square -- free -- which I am offering since I am still jammed up on the fill I've been trying to write and it would be nice to finally get the card blacked out. (That prompt gets you a minimum of 500 words, because of that challenge's rules.)

Once again, please leave a comment with one to three characters, a prompt from one of my bingo cards (or a word/phrase of your own inspiration!), and a scenario, and I will write you a ficlet of at least 250 words.

-----

Obligatory small print:

1. I reserve the right to veto any fandoms I don't know well enough to write, and ask you to please try again.

2. Crossover prompts are fine. On the vanishingly unlikely chance anyone wants to read a snippet from any of my original worlds and stories, that kind of prompt is also fine.

3. In the Genprompt Bingo challenge, WILD CARD means to grab any prompt from the complete Round 12 prompt list. I reserve the right to veto any such wild card substitutions and ask you to please try again.

4. Genprompt Bingo fills do not have to be gen! (The 'gen' refers to the squares, which do not automatically presuppose shipping.) Just be aware that I'm not great at romance, so if you request shipfic, it will come out fairly low-key and may end up as ambiguous gen anyway.

Fill List:

1. A Bit of Hot Water: Let's go with Daystar and Shiara, Pipes and Beer, and the results of Shiara not quite being finished with her training with Kazul. Written 7/17/17 for [personal profile] wistfulmemory. (4,350 words)

2. How Easy All Can See: How about this: Ilgamuth/Shezan, "heart on sleeve", Shezan has just heard of the defeat at Anvard (really, I'd be happy with anything at all about Shezan and Ilgamuth!) Written 7/28/17 for [archiveofourown.org profile] priscipixie. (1,200 words)

3. Queen of the Night: Lucy Pevensie in the early days at Cair Paravel, "midnight", surely a queen of Narnia doesn't need a bedtime. Written 7/28/17 for [livejournal.com profile] priscipixie. (1,225 words)

4. With Only Mild Complaining: I would love something for Karen & Foggy & Matt (or ot3!) + libel! Something about how vigilante/law/media deals with a case of libel in some way. Written 10/15/17 for [personal profile] rosaxx50. (400 words)

FYI, I finally finished the edits to Second Chances, my Daredevil Secret Santa fic from last December, and updated the AO3 file. The story is now ~2,700 words longer, and hopefully everything flows better and the plot arc is less jumpy.

Six months late is better than never? *wry*

Ha! I finally finished the fill scene for "Second Chances," which I have been attempting to write for... uh... three months now? Ugh. Anyway, it still needs some tweaking (like, I want to connect Foggy's client to the Rainmaker in order to bring that element into the picture a little sooner (and not via Matt) and also to reduce rambling and stuff) and of course I still have to finish revising later scenes, but the biggest headache is DEFEATED.

Also I have now successfully inserted Marci into the story, which makes me very happy. :)
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
I have slowly been doing edits on Second Chances, since I wrote that story down to the absolute wire and had approximately negative three hours to edit it before the archive went live (my issues with deadlines, let me show you them *sigh*), and most of what I've done so far, aside from tidying up weird and awkward phrases, is fill in transitiony stuff that I only had time to vaguely gesture at in the initial draft. Or in other words, tweaking the foreshadowing and plot/emotional arcs so they hang together better.

Later I will also need to smooth out the denouement, but right now I'm still stuck on shaping the build-up correctly.

And I think... I think there is too rapid a jump from Ray getting his new job to Matt coming to confront Foggy with Daredevil's investigation results. I think I may need another scene in there. The thing is, I'm not quite sure what it should be. I'm leaning toward maybe Ray dropping in to visit Foggy at HCB? Because I should probably do a bit more with Foggy's professional life, and also lawyer stuff gives him a good reason to A) think conflicted thoughts about Matt and B) be involved in some case that tangentially touches on the Rainmaker thing, so that doesn't come completely out of nowhere when Matt brings it up in the next scene.

But I don't want to plot and wriiiiiiiiiite it... *flops angstily to the ground and sulks*

...You know, instead of whining to the internet, I should go edit [redacted]'s Small Fandom Big Bang fic instead, which I agreed to do and should ALSO stop procrastinating about.

Or maybe just go to bed. It's cold, I am tired and sore from shoveling far too much snow, and presumably things will look more manageable in the morning.
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
I spent last night sort of idly spinning ideas for a Daredevil A/B/O fic of the sudden-change-inflicted-on-a-previously-normal-world type (because A/B/O is one of my bingo card squares, and I think one of the best ways to get to grips with a trope is to try writing it) and...

Well. Occasionally it becomes really obvious that I'm asexual, because I drifted off into alien retroviruses transmitted via magic spells, three-caste social pack systems and their awkward overlay on human sexual dimorphism, varying development/exhibition of A/B/O traits based on the presence or absence of a more socially dominant member of one's caste (similar to arrested development of secondary sex characteristics in male orangutans, because that's always struck me as fascinating), and the whole porn aspect got almost completely lost along the way. I had to keep reminding myself that hey, there's supposed to be a sex thing here, right? This is a porn trope, right?

Apparently my hindbrain disagrees!

Possessive behavior, sure. Pheromones, sure. Marking bites, sure. People dealing with bodies gone strange and unfamiliar, sure. I am totally into that stuff. But bluntly, I don't often find sex especially sexy. Power and fangs and stuff like that are way the hell more of a turn-on, as is found family, pack bonding, and people renegotiating social relationships. Meanwhile, sex qua sex can go hang for all I care; I do not need to interrupt my delicious plot and character dynamics with random bedroom grunting. *wry*
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
Today is Daredevil Secret Santa reveal day! Here is the story I wrote:

Second Chances: When Foggy meets an old acquaintance who's fallen on hard times, he naturally does his best to help. When this leads to romance, he couldn't be happier. Unfortunately, life is never that simple. Foggy/OMC, Foggy/Matt. (14,825 words, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] iraya)

-----

So uh, this story is a little bit of a mess still, which is my own fault for not starting it until very close to the deadline. I was avoiding it because the prompt asked for a type of tropey romance plot that I am very bad at writing. Unfortunately for me, iraya's other prompts asked for romance involving a ship that makes no emotional sense to me -- here is where I say, Your Ship Is Not My Ship, And That's Okay! -- each with some attached tropes that are emphatically Not My Trope (And That's Okay!), which meant this one was my only real option.

further thoughts, to be read after you read the fic )

I still want to make a bunch more edits to this story, and may post a revised version sometime in January. Until then, though, this is far and away the longest story I wrote all year and I'm proud that it hangs together considering how far outside my strengths it is, and the ridiculous time crunch I got myself into.
