stuff done: Tuesday

1. One job application. I don't really care about this one, but I have to do three job-search activities per week for my unemployment insurance, even if I have no real intention of following up on them. And, you know, if this company happens to take me up on my offer, it wouldn't be the end of the world or anything. *shrug*

2. Edited somebody else's NFE fic. It is a good fic; I think y'all are going to enjoy it. :)

3. Finished reading and commenting on every work in the Ladystuck Remix main collection and treats collection. Go me! (Once again, I advise anyone with an interest in female-character-centric Homestuck fics and art to go check those out. Look through the prior collections as well while you're there!)

4. Tweaked my Tumblr theme so reblogs no longer automatically display in all-italics. That had been bugging me for years and tonight I was finally fed up enough to fix it.

5. Cooked a batch of rice -- by which I mean two cups' worth -- most of which will go into my freezer for storage.

6. Started a batch of pot roast, which will cook overnight and should finish up around 8 or 9am.

7. Responded to and cleared out all comments-needing-replies from my various inboxes, because today I had the spoons for that kind of social interaction. :)

wherein Liz attempts productivity (kinda-sorta)

Stuff done so far today:

1. Started a batch of veggie sidedish, which should be done around 10pm. I also hardboiled some eggs.

2. Volunteered for the church recycling sale. I am a little unclear what I will actually be doing, as the response got mangled by the coordinator's iPhone autocorrect -- it says, and I quote, "How about Saturday and housewares 830 to 11 or 11 to 2 or him and Sunday we could use some help monocot cashiering and Monday 10 to 2" -- but I will show up to work housewares tomorrow morning and hopefully get clarifications about the rest in person.

3. Started the application process for Not the IRS 2017 tax season... by which I mean I determined that the application website now supports Chrome (yay!) and put the three relevant positions into my job cart to deal with tomorrow.

4. Attempted a new method to combat depression-induced inertia and executive dysfunction, namely, in the morning I will text Vicky one or two things I want to do that day -- specific tasks, with clear endpoints -- and she will text me once or twice later on to remind me and/or ask if I've finished yet. I think this will be helpful, and may improve my productivity on other tasks as well because it's a lot easier to keep going after I get in a groove of doing stuff than it is to get started on that first task.

5. Cleared out the backlog of old reviews/comments I'd been avoiding because they required actual thoughtful responses.

6. Read and reviewed another Ladystuck Remix fic. This leaves me with three to go in the main collection, plus three in the treats collection (and the originals that inspired them). They're all really good stories, but there's a difference between reading just for the hell of it and reading with the intention of leaving a comment that says more than just, "Hey, I liked this."

[Fic] "Hold the Line (As Dreamers Do)" -- Homestuck

Today is Ladystuck Remix reveal day! I wrote two fics: my assignment and a pinch hit. I will talk about each in a separate post.

-----

Hold the Line (As Dreamers Do): 1994: The Betty Crocker conglomerate invites Dr. Jade English, celebrated astrophysicist and CEO of Skaianet Technologies, to teach one year of classes at their first foray into private education, Marjorie Husted University in Houston, Texas.

Jade says yes.

Meanwhile, the Condesce is staging a corporate takeover of Disney. [2,475 words]

[FIc] "Tiny Grass Is Dreaming (Failure To Communicate)" -- Homestuck

Today is Ladystuck Remix reveal day! I wrote two fics: my assignment and a pinch hit. I will talk about each in a separate post.

Tiny Grass Is Dreaming (Failure To Communicate): Something about talking to Damara makes Aranea feel like all her words twist in her mouth and come out as unintelligible nonsense. She hates it. [1,500 words]

wherein Liz reads stuff

I have been slowly commenting my way through the Ladystuck Remix archive. As has become my habit with small single-fandom exchanges, I am reading in reverse word count order, which means I start with art and end with fics that aspire to the short end of Big Bang status. I still have twenty-eight stories to go (plus the three Treat works), and as they will only continue getting longer, I suspect there is no way I will finish before the creator reveal. *sigh*

(It takes a lot longer for me to read remixes than other types of story, because I like to go read (or reread) the fanwork being remixed as well, so as to get a better sense of what the writer/artist was attempting to riff off of.)

The general quality of work is really high this year, FYI! I'm not going to put together a rec list, because I do not have the time or spoons, but you should definitely go check out the main collection and the Treats collection.

Ladystuck Remix (omg, GO READ MY GIFT RIGHT NOW, you will not be sorry!)

The Ladystuck Remix collection is open! Sixty-two remixed female-centric Homestuck fanworks, plus two more in the Treats collection.

Main collection / Treats collection

And what did I get, you may ask? I got this:

The Time-Traveler's Kismesis: Counterthesis (The Troll Out Of Time Remix): Meetings between the Demoness and her kismesis, the Dolorosa, who refuses to give up hope in a world the Demoness knows is doomed. (1,863 words, by a currently anonymous writer)

This takes my short, fragmentary work The Time-Traveler's Kismesis: Counterthesis and not only flips the POV to show Damara's view of that meeting, it extends both forward and backward in time to encompass the whole story of their relationship and is framed by two excellently deployed quotations from Alternian romantic poetry. ;) It is gorgeous and bleak and hopeful all at once, and I love it to pieces, and you should go read it right now and tell the author they're brilliant! ♥

Ladystuck Remix editing progress

I have finished the edits for one of my Ladystuck Remix fics. I also wanted to do a cool thing with Unicode, but apparently AO3 doesn't support what I was trying to kludge it into doing. *sigh* I went with my backup option instead -- it serves the same purpose, but it's not nearly as aesthetically pleasing.

Now I am going to eat lunch and spend my afternoon editing the other remix fic. I think I know what the thematic throughline needs to be, so it's just a question of what tweaks, insertions, and deletions will best bring it out.

-----

ETA, 8:30pm - And I have edited the second remix, yay!

wherein Liz defeats Ladystuck Remix (more or less, anyway)

Ha! I successfully finished and posted my Ladystuck Remix pinch hit.

It is drastically tangential to the original in a lot of ways, though it mirrors one particular aspect with perfect rigidity. I also want to revise it a bunch, though not as much as I want to revise my assigned remix -- in both cases, because I think the stories are thematically sloppy and need a much tighter, cleaner focus.

Still, it's done and that's the main thing. :)

some weeks, it is just really hard to make the words come

Writing stuff:

1. I grabbed a Ladystuck Remix pinch hit. This was possibly a bad idea, but I very much want to play with some of the writer in question's stories, so. We shall see how it goes. :)

2. I just received my Narnia Fic Exchange assignment, whereupon I cracked up and startled the dog, because my recipient reflected several of my own prompts right back at me with slightly different emphases. Obviously these are stories I am interested in! The question now is whether they are stories I can write as well as stories I want to read...

3. I am continuing to edit pieces of "The Transient and the Eternal" and post them to AO3. Most of the edits so far have been very minor -- punctuation tweaks, a rephrased clause here and there -- but the tenth fic got some actual substantive changes. I wanted to mitigate some glaring sexism that snuck in while I wasn't examining my default cultural assumptions, and I wanted to play up Sara and Kira's friendship a bit more by clarifying that she cares about him, she knows he's dangerous, and she doesn't find him personally intimidating in the slightest. Also the beta draft final paragraphs were missing some connective logic, so I needed to let them breathe a touch more.

4. I hate my WIP Big Bang. Hate it, hate it, hate it. ...On the brighter side, my artist sent me a progress shot of the illustration and it looks really cool. So there's that!

one project kind of down (also a not-review of Star Trek Beyond)

I got my dates mixed up somehow and thought the Ladystuck Remix posting deadline was the 24th instead of the 25th. Oh well, that just means I have an extra day of editing time, and that never hurt anyone.

The posted version is kind of, um. Well, dire is too strong a word. It's serviceable. But it's awfully clunky and I think about half my point gets lost in that clunkiness, besides which I didn't have time to apply the formatting thing I want to do. I suppose that's a project for Tuesday.

-----

In other news, Susan and I did succeed in seeing Star Trek Beyond, though the only tickets left were for the very front row so all the characters' faces and shoulders looked weird and some of the action scenes became visually unintelligible because of perspective issues. That aside, I liked it! It was a lot more hope-peace-exploration-wonder than the previous reboot films, and there were no women randomly posing in their underwear, both of which I take as victories. :D

Correction: Several hours later I remembered that there is one very brief shot of an underdressed woman, as part of the montage accompanying Kirk's opening Captain's Log. He's talking about morale and relationships among the crew, and after we see a shot of a happy (and fully clothed) couple ducking into a doorway while kissing, we see a shot of a (barely clothed) woman throwing a (fully clothed) man out of her room into the corridor. So it's gratuitous underwear, which is annoying, but it's also over in about two seconds and it's not set up in a way where a male character is watching a female character undress without her knowing he can see. Everybody else remains fully clothed through the entire movie, despite a gag reference to Kirk's shirt getting torn.

Ladystuck Remix progress report

Okay, I have picked a story to remix (in an unsurprising turn, it's the one I kept picking at in my head over the past week) and have made a super-minimal provisional outline. The thing is, this remix will either require me to learn some coding really quick in order to do a certain thing, or I will have to... uh... that would be a spoiler, damn. I mean, there is a relatively convenient fudge I could use in case of emergency, but I'd prefer to avoid that because it will look like I wasn't actually putting thought and effort into mirroring a certain effect in the original story.

I've done a little googling on the programming option, which mostly left me more confused than when I started. And on that note, is anyone willing to let me ask dumbass questions about Unicode and/or AO3 work skins via email or private message?

have I mentioned that I am terrible at time management? because I am

Okay. Current writing project summary:

1. WIP Big Bang. My posting date is August 15. I should probably have all my chapters done at least a week before that, for editing purposes. I am currently stuck (yet again) halfway through ch. 11 because I suddenly realized I need to explain a bunch of political process stuff, which should have been introduced a lot sooner for proper flow and foreshadowing purposes. I have the terrible feeling I need to go back and make edits to previously posted chapters so the necessary setup for my ending is in place. (This is doubly annoying since I already did make edits on ch. 1 a couple years back. *sigh*)

2. Ladystuck Remix. Due July 25. I looked through my remixee's archive, picked a few likely stories, and then stalled out. This is my most immediately pressing project and I should try to get an outline and a decent stab at a rough draft done by Sunday night.

3. Narnia Fic Exchange. I made my requests and offer today, though I may tweak them somewhat before the signup period closes. Assignments go out around July 29 and stories are due August 31. I don't need to worry about this for a month.

4. Remix Redux. There is no schedule yet and signups probably won't open until next week at the earliest. Again, I don't need to worry for a while.

5. Daredevil Bingo. [personal profile] significantowl wants to set one up. I want to participate! No hard details exist yet.

6. I am not allowed to sign up as a Palestuck pinch hitter. I do not have the time. (Other people should, though!)

7. "Guardian" ch. 17. Yeah, I'll... uh... get back to you on that sometime? *headdesk*

2016-05-22 09:55 pm

once again, it is time for things and stuff

Things done recently:

1. Got around to seeing Captain America: Civil War on Wednesday. That was not really a Cap movie; that was an Avengers movie... which is not inherently a bad thing (I like big team movies), but is annoying because Steve should not get upstaged by Tony in his own damn movie. Also holy shit the writers have no idea how international diplomacy and treaties work, do they? The logistics on that broke my suspension of disbelief so badly that I spent the rest of the story with a little section of my mind just spinning its wheels trying to think of some way to handwave that mess that made even a token 5% gesture at real-world logic.

(I am still working on that, btw.)

But it was fun, and I'm glad I saw it on the big screen.

2. Drove to NJ on Friday, after which I spent the evening hanging out with Susan -- by which I mean we ordered a pizza and talked about nothing in particular for a few hours, and then my parents and aunt arrived home from their trip and all five of us talked about nothing in particular for another hour and a half. Sometimes it's nice to just be around someone without pressure to be Doing A Thing, you know?

3. Went over to Susan's on Sunday afternoon, where we watched Deadpool (we had both missed it in theaters, which is much more explicable in my case) and agreed that it was pretty much exactly what we'd wanted out of a Deadpool movie. I would definitely be interested in a sequel. :)

4. Washed a lot of laundry.

5. Not written any fiction since Thursday evening. Traveling is a little disruptive that way. *shrug*

6. Signed up for Ladystuck Remix, because I love remix challenges and I love Ladystuck, and while two great things do not always and necessarily taste great together, in this case, I am pretty sure they will. :)

7. Despite not actually writing, I did make a firmer outline for the rest of "The Courting Dance," which became possible once I finally figured out how to approach Peridan's POV chapter. (In summary, I'd been starting in entirely the wrong place and being too narrative instead of focusing on his own preoccupations.) Previously my 'outline' could be summarized as, "And then politics, return to Archenland, Great Council session, maybe another wedding, the end. Remember [redacted argument point] and [redacted physical prop]." Which is not wrong, but is not terribly useful either. Now I know whose POV I'll be in for each chapter, and have at least a one-sentence summary of what should be happening. I have also decided not to actually write the second, northern-style wedding, because while the fact that Aravis and Cor agree to put on that show is important, the show itself is irrelevant to the story I am telling.

[Fic] "Let the Water Take Me" -- Homestuck

Today is Ladypalooza reveal day! I wrote two fics this year: my assignment and a pinch hit. I will talk about each in a separate post.

-----

Let the Water Take Me: You've known since you were a wiggler that one night Meenah Peixes will set you free. You've known for almost as long that your death will only draw her further into the trap of your Master's schemes. And it only took one sweep in your Master's active service before it occurred to you that she is the only other troll in the universe who will live as long as you, with all the loneliness and loss that implies. It would take a far stronger person than you will ever be to not love and pity her a little, if only in the abstract. (You will destroy her anyway.) Handmaid/Condesce, depression, suicidal ideation, attempted suicide. [2,450 words]

-----

This is a pinch hit, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] Burgundyrose!

The prompt was for a version of Handmaid/Condesce that leaned toward red- or palerom rather than blackrom, which I leapt at because I'd been wanting to write something along those lines for a while but didn't have any framework for such a story. Burgundyrose's suggestion of a scene where the young Handmaid tries to drown herself, only to be interrupted by the Condesce, immediately gave me ideas. :D

I've always liked this ship, and while my first impulse in 2012 was to categorize it as a kismessisitude gone wrong (one of them kills the other), I later rethought my stance and decided the Handmaid would be much more likely to hate the Dolorosa, the Signless, the Disciple, or the Summoner. See, what would piss her off most is hope, since she knows in her bones how futile it is to expect any change to the system she's helped build at Lord English and Doc Scratch's orders. And by the time the Condesce is an adult, I think she shares that fatalistic, nothing-changes worldview. She comes at it from a different direction -- her core assumption is that she's always going to win and always be in charge -- but that can easily get wearing and pointless in its own way. She and the Handmaid also share an assessment of other trolls as toys/game-pieces.

And when you come down to it, after all, the Handmaid wants to die. She makes a genuine suicide threat to Doc Scratch as a child, and I can't think eternity in Lord English's service was any kind of pleasure. The Condesce, in effect, frees her by killing her.

"Let the Water Take Me" is a small exercise in radically divergent character perspective. For Meenah, it's almost a meet-cute (aside from, you know, the 'I rescued you from attempted suicide' thing), whereas for Damara, it's several small tragedies bound together because she knows exactly how their story is going to end, hates what that's going to do to Meenah, hates herself for looking forward to it, and would probably go through with that final assisted suicide attempt even if she did think she could change the outcome, because she wants her freedom more than she wants to save Meenah from Lord English's service. (And she hates herself for that, too.)

I used the characters' Beforan names for simplicity's sake, because Meenah at this point in her life is too young for an adult title (and might have used a different one at first anyway).

[Fic] "Wear Your Finest Hour" -- Homestuck

Today is Ladypalooza reveal day! I wrote two fics this year: my assignment and a pinch hit. I will talk about each in a separate post.

-----

Wear Your Finest Hour: Rose and Jade go dress-shopping for prom. Jade/Rose. [1,350 words]

-----

This is my assignment, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] casetrippy!

Casetrippy made a number of interesting prompts, most of which I felt unqualified to write for varying reasons. So I went for the cute and slightly ridiculous prom fic instead. :D I was originally going to include a scene from the actual prom, but the (tiny!) character arc wrapped up so neatly at the end of the dress shopping scene that I couldn't figure out how to extend the story without tacking on some kind of action/adventure or mystery plot, which didn't seem like it would quite fit the spirit of the prompt, so I quit while I was ahead.

I had a small struggle wrapping my head around a version of Jade who displays a strong Indian/Southeast Asian cultural identity in her everyday life, since her canon cultural background (insofar as she displays any) comes from Colonel Sassacre and the Condesce via Jake Harley and is kind of generic rich American plus weird sci-fi and survivalist influences (regardless of what racial identity you go with), but I eventually came up with a backstory wherein Grandpa Harley, on his quest to see the world, wound up working as a railroad telegraph operator in British India and falling in love with a local woman who became Jade's grandmother. This is loosely referenced in the paragraph where Jade explains how she found her own prom dress in her grandfather's attic.

The dresses described in the fic are based on one of casetrippy's lovely pictures, which you can see either via that link or embedded at the end of the story. The title is from Steeleye Span's "We Shall Wear Midnight," a song from their Wintersmith album based on Terry Pratchett's work. The song has no thematic relation to the fic; I just liked that particular line in conjunction with Jade's description of the two dresses.

[Rec] "Life & Space" -- Homestuck

Ladypalooza authors were revealed today, which reminded me that I never posted about the opening of the archive or my gift. *headdesk*

So let me do that now.

Life & Space (1249 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] GracefulArchitect
Fandom: Homestuck
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jade Harley, Jane Crocker

Summary: Jane visits Jade on her island.

This is a lovely fic about Jane and Jade spending time together post-game, nominally because Jane wants some technical advice on pieces of Crockercorp technology she's trying to safely decommission, but also because she wants to know her ecto-relative a little better. The background details are perfect, and the slight awkwardness of two people who share a bunch of friends (and an interlude of mind control) but haven't interacted much on their own comes across clearly, as well as the first steps toward a more proper friendship.

Go read it!

work and writing

Today was my first day of proper work at Not the IRS this year. Of course, since it is too early for people to have their W-2 forms yet (they aren't required to be sent until the end of January), there was hardly any work to do. But the office is officially open and therefore people have to staff it.

I ran through two case studies on practice mode, sat in to observe an audit services discussion, and scheduled an appointment for a guy who walked in and wanted to talk with someone about his tax situation since it's going to be kind of messy. The next two weeks will basically be more audits and consults, neither of which I am allowed to do. Well, I could maybe technically do consults, but in practice anyone who needs that service has a much more complicated life than I am qualified to deal with yet and wouldn't want me as their adviser. And so I am not scheduled for many days or hours right now.

Things will pick up in late January, though, and hopefully by then my state paid preparer ID number will have been approved. (I have the federal PTIN, but New York requires their own separate PTIN because bureaucracy is annoying that way, blargh.)

-----

In other news, I finished and posted my Ladypalooza fic on time. Then I made the mistake of looking at the pinch hit mailing list, which always seems to end with me saying, "I do technically have the time; that prompt looks right up my alley; and if not me, then who?" and completely bollixing my schedule for the next few days. *headdesk*

But you know, the prompt I grabbed really is right up my alley, and I don't have anything I need to do on Wednesday or Thursday...

We shall see how it goes!

Dear Ladypalooza Writer/Artist

Note: I am repurposing my stock Yuletide letter here, which is why some of the sections may seem slightly off-topic for a single fandom exchange.

Hi, and thank you in advance for creating a story or artwork for me! I'm pretty easy to please -- unless you write a context-free sex scene, I'll be thrilled just to get something in response to one of my prompts. Optional details are optional, after all! *grin* But I realize that's not terribly helpful, so here's the (very!) long version. (I am sorry for the tl;dr, but I like to talk about things I love and I figure more details are better than fewer.)

[Fic] "Sandedge" -- Homestuck

Today is Ladystuck reveal day! I wrote four fics this year: my assignment, a pinch hit, and two treats just because. I will talk about each in a separate post.

-----

Sandedge: Unfortunately, when you turn around, you realize the cave was already occupied. Fortunately, the occupant can be reasoned with. (The Dolorosa meets the Disciple.) [1,325 words]

-----

This is a treat written for [archiveofourown.org profile] ratherrumpus, who asked for an exploration of the Dolorosa's relationship with the Disciple. It's kind of a sequel to an unwritten story about the Disciple's early childhood that I've been struggling with for over a year. That fic would start with a tiny, nameless, feral troll girl slowly and warily getting domesticated by the abbess of Sandedge, and end with her flight into the desert after the abbey's destruction. I'm not sure I'll ever figure out how to write that story, so it was nice to have a chance to pick up some of the background work and repurpose it in a slightly more hopeful setting.

The fic is part of my Ancestral Nights continuity, though I obviously couldn't add it to that series while the Ladystuck archives were still anonymous.

And now for a trivia note! I've mentioned the Sandedge spaceport twice in Trollstuck: Make Her Pay -- once as the location of a fight between the Summoner and the Grand Highblood, and once as a line in a wiggler rhyme that Vriska uses to disrupt Davven's thoughts and dialogue. So it's part of my general headcanon about the Ancestors and Alternia, though I haven't had a chance to explore it in detail, either as a spaceport or an abbey.

[Fic] "The Rule of Threes" -- Homestuck

Today is Ladystuck reveal day! I wrote four fics this year: my assignment, a pinch hit, and two treats just because. I will talk about each in a separate post.

-----

The Rule of Threes: The day Aradia Megido arrived in New York, three important things happened, though she only noted two at the time. [1,375 words]

-----

This is a treat, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] ChameleonSerket. They requested a humanstuck modern magic AU with the following elements:

-Aradia, a hedgewitch in a small town with a talent for fortune telling and prediction, moves to a big seaside city to seek fame and fortune (or something like that anyway).
-Feferi, a very rich noble who is the most powerful seawitch that has been seen for decades.
-Jade, a mysterious witch living in Aradia's apartment block who may or may not have space altering powers.
-Finally, Rose who is a seer plagued by horrible rage filled episodes (possession?) with an affinity for both light and dark magics.

I didn't get Feferi on-page, but I managed the rest. As with "The Moons of Skaia," there's a much larger story I didn't have time to write -- in a very real sense, "The Rule of Threes" acts as the opening chapter for that unwritten fic. And again, maybe someday I will come back and see where the threads I laid will take me. :-)
