Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

[Fic] "Cobweb Maze: In the Morning Light" -- original story, Ithaca Paranormal

Another snippet of "Cobweb Maze," this one after Takeshi spends the night on Lia's couch following an attack from her stalker. He drives her in to her store the next day and hangs around for a while, watching her prepare to open. (550 words)

In the Morning Light )

---------------------------------------------

Lia and Takeshi confuse the hell out of each other sometimes. Possibly I should not find that as cute as I generally do. :-)

[Fic] "A Dream of Butterflies: If Not Us" -- original story, Ithaca Paranormal

This is a snippet from my Ithaca Paranormal universe, introducing Hikaru "Kari" Fitzroy, who is Takeshi Fitzroy's little sister. She has a masters in cultural studies, which is a cross-disciplinary thing she cobbled together; it includes Touched studies, women's studies, and also Asian studies. Kari is big on social justice, and also history and sociology. She was teaching at... I dunno, somewhere out in California, probably, and had trouble with some of the faculty and a couple student groups over various protests she organized and her habit of insulting people who couldn't or wouldn't understand her points.

Anyway, she was considering a suit for discrimination and/or harassment, though she knew there was only about a 50% chance of winning and also it would cost a lot of money she didn't have, but then Takeshi married Lia. Kari was not pleased; she doesn't trust Lia. (This is a very understandable reaction, as Lia is... well, she's guilty of manslaughter at the least, let's just put it that way.) So Kari put out feelers to Cornell and got a job offer, and quit her previous university without actually suing them.

Now she's in Ithaca, starting the fall semester. This ficlet deals with the first day of her class on Touched rights. (575 words)

If Not Us )

---------------------------------------------

I should note that while the National Association for the Promotion of Touched Rights (NAPTR) is completely fictional, the ACLU is very real.

[Fic] "Cobweb Maze: Dinner Date" -- original, Ithaca Paranormal

This is a snippet from some point in "Cobweb Maze," an original... well, it's either paranormal romance or urban fantasy. In other words, it is based around a heterosexual love story, but there's a lot of other stuff going on, and Lia Reynard and Takeshi Fitzroy don't fit a lot of paranormal romance relationship stereotypes. (Also, I am never sure quite where the line between urban fantasy and paranormal romance is.)

Anyway, this takes place sometime after In the Still of the Night, the snippet I previously posted from this story. Aileen Stearns is the main character from another novel set in this world, wherein she meets a guy named Joey Malinowski and they try to clear a mutual friend from a murder charge. Aileen and Takeshi dated a while ago, but mutually broke it off and became close platonic friends. Kari, who is mentioned in passing in the following snippet, is Hikaru Fitzroy, Takeshi's little sister. (550 words)

Dinner Date )

---------------------------------------------

Hmm. Takeshi is awfully cute when he's flustered. And I am very fond of Aileen as well. I wonder if I should try writing one of their novels for NaNo this year...?

[Fic] "Curiosity, Satisfied" -- original story, Ithaca Paranormal (AU continuity)

One way my Ithaca Paranormal universe didn't end up going. (Don't get me wrong -- I love 'hidden world' tropes like the one this story uses -- but worlds where the weirdness has always been out in the open have more interesting possibilities in the alternate history department.)

What would you do if you found out your best friend was a werewolf? (2,150 words)

Curiosity, Satisfied )

---------------------------------------------

In other news, my parents will be visiting me Friday and Saturday. We'll have my slightly belated birthday dinner on Friday night, and then on Saturday we will... do something. Probably visit Bellwether Hard Cider, for one thing. I am at something of a loss for other activities, though. Maybe there are things going on up at Cornell? Well, I will investigate my options on Wednesday or Thursday.

[Fic] "Cobweb Maze: In the Still of the Night" -- original story, Ithaca Paranormal

The following ficlet is sort of exploratory noodling for a paranormal romance mystery/thriller story I will probably not ever write (on account of absolutely sucking at standard genre romance). That book, "Cobweb Maze," is set in Ithaca and is actually the second in a series of loosely connected stories I have semi-outlined. The idea is that some people in this world have 'paranormal' abilities of various types, known as 'touches.' These people are called the Touched, and are currently discriminated against in America, though their legal and social status has varied from culture to culture and era to era.

The basic abilities are shifters (shape-shifters), channelers (energy-manipulators: telekinetics, pyrokinetics, electrokinetics, etc.), doors (psychics and mediums), bounds (people linked to an aspect of their local environment), voids (can suppress touches), and magicians (can manipulate both their own and other people's touches). People without touches are called nulls. The strength of touches is ranked as follows: minor, magnus, and maximus aka force majeur. Sometimes 'minor' is split into three subcategories: minimus, minor, and medium. Touches are also classified as voluntary, semi-voluntary, and involuntary, depending on people's level of control.

"Cobweb Maze" deals with the relationship between Lia Reynard, a mysterious woman haunted by the ghosts of her two dead friends and pursued by a shadowy figure, who has opened an 'occult' shop on South Cayuga St., and Takeshi Fitzroy, a high school librarian who moonlights as a police consultant, since he's the most powerful magician in the Finger Lakes region. But this ficlet is just a conversation between Lia and one of her ghosts. (550 words)

In the Still of the Night )

---------------------------------------------

Someday I should post the world-building I've done for this 'series,' since I think it's rather interesting and I highly doubt I'll ever get around to writing the books said world-building is supposedly in service of. (Maybe if I call them urban fantasy and mostly ignore the romance element? I think all the stories except the one about Takeshi's sister Hikaru could work as platonic friendships...)

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction: Original Stories

---------------------------------------------
Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction: Original Stories
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized primarily by... *ponders terminology* by universe, shall we say. Within each universe, I organized stories by timelines, by associated story cycles, or by degree of relation to the main story; the summaries should hopefully make the patterns clear. When the 'universe' is a category rather than a fully realized secondary world, the stories are arranged chronologically by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations. (Especially the writing dates. *headdesk*)

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia).

Notes: I am shamefully slow about my original writing, and I almost never seem to finish anything. Nonetheless, a fair amount of the following stories are complete, if only because I try to avoid posting those likely to be permanently unfinished. *sigh*

Also, a general advisory: you may or may not have noticed while reading my fanfic -- my quirks are somewhat disguised and/or mitigated by working in other people's universes -- but I am fascinated by ethics, religion, families and other social networks, sociology, history, culture clashes, world-building, and the nature and structure of truth and stories. I also have a strong tendency to focus on female characters. A lot of my original fiction is slower and more 'thinky' than a lot of my fanfic, and my issues show through more clearly.

None of these are necessarily bad things, but I figure it's only fair to tell you what to expect from my work. :)
