Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

Several months ago I wrote a weird 15-minute thing about a woman traveling south in the winter. Then it bugged me until I worked out a more coherent background for it. This is part of that background.

Ata of the Bloody Hand )

---------------------------------------------

In other news, this morning I did my naturalistic observation of children for my Child Psych project. Except it kind of got skewed because the kids kept coming over and talking to me, so I wasn't a neutral observer. Oh well. I think I got a lot of good stuff anyway.

And man, 5-year-olds really don't think the same way adults do. I can't reconstruct my own thinking back that far; I can only get to about age 7 or 8 most of the time. What little I do remember suggests that I was in some ways weirdly precocious -- read on a 2nd or 3rd grade level in kindergarten -- but in others right in line with everyone else -- not quite grasping the rules of certain activities, and being unable to quietly line up and follow group instructions.

Also, I couldn't tie my own shoes. (I learned that halfway through kindergarten -- they came untied during class, and I reached down and tied them, though I'd been completely unable to do that the same morning. I learn like that a lot -- the eureka moment.)

Here is this week's offering, very loosely based on a dream I had several years ago. (The dream was much more explicit than this. I would rate this story a mild PG-13 at best, and that only for vague implications in the last lines.) ETA: Revised 11/19/05, with further minor edits 6/23/06, since I later elaborated the dream/vignette into a proper world and story. This version is more compliant with the (hopeful) eventual book.

Day of the Dead )

---------------------------------------------

In other news, Vicky informs me that "Fire," my currently unedited Hermione monologue, has definite potential despite the massive self-insertion. The way I see it, my childhood has substantial similarities to what I imagine Hermione's was like. Why not use my own experiences to add verisimilitude?

The Milton paper is driving me up the wall. Also, I suspect the war in Heaven section, with the cannons, snuck into the preceding ficlet in Ata's invasion and siege tactics. Yay infernal engines of metals torn from the entrails of the earth, which belch fire and sulphurous vapors!

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction: Original Stories
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized primarily by... *ponders terminology* by universe, shall we say. Within each universe, I organized stories by timelines, by associated story cycles, or by degree of relation to the main story; the summaries should hopefully make the patterns clear. When the 'universe' is a category rather than a fully realized secondary world, the stories are arranged chronologically by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations. (Especially the writing dates. *headdesk*)

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: I am shamefully slow about my original writing, and I almost never seem to finish anything. Nonetheless, a fair amount of the following stories are complete, if only because I try to avoid posting those likely to be permanently unfinished. *sigh*

Also, a general advisory: you may or may not have noticed while reading my fanfic -- my quirks are somewhat disguised and/or mitigated by working in other people's universes -- but I am fascinated by ethics, religion, families and other social networks, sociology, history, culture clashes, world-building, and the nature and structure of truth and stories. I also have a strong tendency to focus on female characters. A lot of my original fiction is slower and more 'thinky' than a lot of my fanfic, and my issues show through more clearly.

None of these are necessarily bad things, but I figure it's only fair to tell you what to expect from my work. :)
