Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

Summary: In happier times, Arthur babysits for Mal and Dom. (1,050 words)

Notes: This fic is set in the same fusion AU as Weregild, but takes place in September 2006, five years before Arthur meets Ariadne in St. Louis. It's also a response to the Cotton Candy Bingo prompt babysitting.

[ETA: The AO3 crosspost is now up. *grin*]

Beneath Rain on a Strange Roof )

Because backstory and world-building will always be my secret vices. *grin*

(The title quote is from William Faulkner, I think, though I couldn't tell you the exact source. I tend to google random quotes on appropriate topics when I am completely at sea for titles, which is often. That may be another of my secret vices, come to think of it...)
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
The edited version of Weregild: Chapter 3 is now up on AO3! Jean-Claude's dinner parties are often more about politics than dinner; this one is no exception. Arthur and Dom successfully deliver their information, but Anita's suspicion of their motives throws yet another potential wrench in the works. Meanwhile, Ariadne and Arthur continue to flirt something awful despite theoretically knowing better. (9,800 words)

...

Now I just need to knock off chapter 8 of "Trollstuck" and I can buckle down to finishing "Lemonade" once and for all. *evil laughter*
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
Part twenty, in which Arthur gets maudlin, Ariadne gets philosophical, and they continue to flirt something awful. (1,450 words)

Weregild, part 20 )

---------------------------------------------

And that is the end of chapter 3! I will post the collected version on AO3 in a couple days, after I've had a chance to look it over and make a few edits.

1. Sunday was the last day of GrassRoots (a local music festival in Trumansburg, just on the west side of Cayuga Lake) which means it was also my fifth day in a row working noon to closing, since both Boss Lady and Lemme-Tell-Ya attend faithfully every year. Monday will be Sweetheart's fifth day in a row opening the store, since she and I covered the bulk of the shifts while our coworkers were gone; Melodrama and Puppydog covered the middle bits, with one shift of assistance from the manager of our sister store in Elmira.

I have no interest in attending GrassRoots -- camping out for four days in the hottest part of the year is really, really, really not my thing -- but Sweetheart likes both music and summer, and it's unfair to her that Lemme-Tell-Ya has put permanent dibs on the event every year they've both worked at the smoke shop. Ah well. Perhaps next year.

-----

2. I continue to post one chapter of "Secrets" per day over on AO3. I am editing slightly as I go -- mostly removing italics, but also fixing some weird punctuation (apparently in 2004/2005 I had a Thing for starting sentences with ellipses, which baffles me in retrospect) and rephrasing a few lines. I am copying those changes over to the ff.net version, but I'm not certain the two versions are exactly the same, since I've discovered some minor discrepancies between the files on my computer and the posted version on ff.net. I do not feel like going over them with a fine-tooth comb, nor do I especially want to reformat and re-upload the damn things, so I will just declare the AO3 version the most canonical from here on out. (I am not even going to begin editing the FictionAlley version, though I probably ought to upload chapter 15 and the epilogue once I do my final pass-through. Also chapter 14, which I seem not to have ever cross-posted over there, whoops.)

-----

3. I haven't actually started work on "Guardian," since I got a bit of momentum going on "Weregild" and I think one more section will finish off chapter three, which I can then collect and post on AO3. So I'm going to see if I can get that done on Monday -- I have 100 words of part 20 written already, which is not much but better than nothing.

-----

4. My parents are driving to Ithaca on Wednesday in order to drop off their car for the next two months. I will be working that day, but we plan to do lunch on my break. Which reminds me that I must write a note to Upstairs Neighbors R and A to tell them I will need my driveway back for a while. I will do that in the morning.

-----

And now I am going to have a slice of bread and a hard-boiled egg, finish rereading Avalanche by [personal profile] branchandroot, and get some well-earned sleep.
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
I hereby present "Weregild" part nineteen, in which Ariadne is displeased, Anita is suspicious, Arthur is conciliatory, and Dom is quietly eating dinner in the background, I guess. (1,600 words)

Weregild, part 19 )

---------------------------------------------

That was not quite where I thought I was going with this, but I realized partway through that Ariadne's regular job would be an obstacle to the plot -- I did not want to start going through ridiculous logical contortions to make Arthur and Dom visit Guilty Pleasures -- and this was the most obvious way around that.

And now to bed. :-)
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
So hey, I'm going to bed now in an attempt to wrench myself back onto a saner sleep schedule (yes, that does mean I've been as misaligned to the sun as you think it means) and am therefore not going to write anything tonight...

But.

I am fully aware that I have a bunch of other unfinished stories hanging over my head, but these are the ones that are closest to speaking to me right at the moment and are thus most likely to get anywhere useful. (I will also, of course, be working on my NFE fic, but that is still in brainstorm/outline phase rather than draft phase, so it doesn't quite feel like writing, and I really want to write stuff.)

ETA, Friday night: Thank you to everyone who voted! The tally (combining Dreamwidth poll results with LJ comments) is 5 votes for "The Guardian in Spite of Herself," 4 for "Weregild," 3 for "Playing Politics," and 1 each for "Damaged Goods" and the sadly untitled crossdressing porn.

When weighed against relative section lengths (and adding in that Asuka almost voted for "Weregild" rather than "Damaged Goods"), I'm going to try finishing part 19 of "Weregild" before charging into the wilds of "Guardian" ch. 16. (I'm a lot more likely to write one thousand words in a night than to write four thousand, basically.) But if "Weregild" proves recalcitrant, I will swap over immediately to "Guardian."

And now, onward!

I signed up for [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo, which is a panfandom fluff bingo promptfest (round one runs until the end of the year), partly just because I want to write HAPPY THINGS, goshdarnit, and partly because I hope it will be a good source of finger exercises: playing scales to keep my hand in, as it were.

(Round Two Card)

So yeah, we'll see how that goes.

For [personal profile] branchandroot:

In which there is a tense meeting that notionally doubles as a dinner party (except not really, aside from the French onion soup), Jean-Claude probably wonders what the hell he was thinking by inviting Anita and Richard to the same place at the same time, and Arthur and Ariadne continue to flirt something awful. Next I will try "Lemonade" or "The Courting Dance," most likely. [livejournal.com profile] explodingfrogs, your suggestion would inevitably turn into another AU just as long as Trollstuck (because I would have to explain All The Backstory, and then obviously there would be a plot involving Karkat's efforts to not get betrayed and murdered like the Sufferer while throwing out the hemospectrum and trying to change troll society to the point where he can abdicate, dammit, because he's a leader but not like that, this worship stuff is sick (even if it turns out he does maybe have some kind of vast psychic powers or something, that's just random genetic luck and it doesn't mean people should bow to him, omg why are people so stupid, grrr hiss elaborate scatological metaphor)), and I don't have the time right now, sorry. I am totally willing to sketch out the world-building, though. :-)
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
I am, in fact, still writing this story. (Just as I am, in fact, still writing all my interminably delayed WIPs... but let that go. *sigh*) And look! I finally got Anita and Richard on-screen! (1,475 words)

Weregild, part 17 )

---------------------------------------------

...I have a suspicion that my frequent annoyance at Anita (and often Richard) is bleeding through a bit more than I would prefer. Then again, I think if we weren't seeing the series through Anita's eyes, she would come off rather unpleasantly there, too. So this is mostly Anita without the mitigating effect of seeing her emotions and motivations from the inside... but yeah, some of it is just that I want someone to call her on her shit sometimes.

Richard too. Hamilton punishes him a lot, but mostly for things that aren't really his fault, while the issues he ought to deal with are either ignored or kicked down the road. Maybe this gets fixed after... I think I stopped reading around Cerulean Sins, maybe? The last book I clearly remember is Narcissus in Chains, but I must have read one or two beyond that to get fed up enough to quit the series. So Cerulean Sins or Incubus Dreams. (I KNOW I didn't read Danse Macabre, because I am sure I'd remember Jean-Claude opening a dance club. *wry*) Anyway, maybe Hamilton gets over her problem with Richard later in the series, but she was still treating him very awkwardly last I knew.

But enough of my blather.
