Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

These stories are all mine! *grin* I use the same warning policy and quality rating system as for my fanfiction.

This is another snippet of my alternate American novel, "The Summoner's Tale." Here, Catherine gives Colin the tour of her house that Mrs. West refered to in Quiet, Before.

Legacies )

And that's that.

Back in my real life, I was at Pat's for two and a half hours, and while it's good to see her again, she isn't doing as well these days. She's just more scattered than before, and it takes her longer to do things than it used to. Consequently, she gets annoyed a bit more often. *shrug* I'm sure I would too, if I were in her place.

This one is set in the same world as a couple of other early 15-minute fics, "Leah's Garden" and "Reckoning." Anyway, it's an alternate America where we got settled sort of on a buy-a-lordship program, and technology has taken a somewhat more meandering path toward modernity. Also, the Protestant Reformation went a little differently, particularly in England.

These fics are all related to a novel called "The Summoner's Tale" that I've been taking stabs at starting for a while. This would be set early in the novel, should it ever amount to much of anything.

(I'm not very happy with it, but I consider it part of my attempts to work out the proper way to tell the whole story.)

Quiet, Before )

In other news, my computer has gone crazy. There's something wrong with it, so it can only start up in "safe" mode so I can fix whatever problem it has. Except it's refusing to recognize my mouse, so I can't use the troubleshooting programs. Argh!

Also, while I can open and modify Word files, I can't move them to disk. So I can't post "Sir Ron" until I get things fixed. Double argh.

I'm going to start by trying a new mouse.

Could not take the Spenser essay any more (there is only so much one can say at a time about knighthood and deception and self-contradiction and pride and humility and the definition of nobility and obligation), so I took a break to clear my head. I ended up doing more background work on "The Summoner's Tale," mostly because Catherine fascinates me. I love her to pieces, but she's so messed up.

Anyway. Here's another snippet, which helps clarify some of her motives for trying to kick-start the end of the world as we know it... as much as one can ever clarify such a thing.

Reckoning )

In other news, the downstairs entryway light and the second-floor landing light are both dead. I love my house (it's an 8-bedroom, rented out by room), but it's really a run-down piece of crap sometimes. And I think one of the toilets flooded yesterday. At any rate, the bathmat was suspiciously soaked and stinky, and left in a crumpled pile by the toilet. *sigh*

I'm avoiding my essay on Spenser's Faerie Queene and decided to write fiction instead. This is sort of backstory to "The Summoner's Tale," an original novel-type thing. It's set in an alternate America where

A) some magic works (particularly alchemy)
B) as a result, technology is both different and less advanced than in our world
C) Christianity has a significantly greater focus on Mary than in our world, and
D) the English settled North America by dividing it into great estates for new noble families; the Revolution thus created a sort of constitutional oligarchy rather than a straight-up republic.

Catherine is one of the main characters in "The Summoner's Tale" and is the basic instigator of the plot. This is an exploration of her childhood. Well, it's also about her mother, but Catherine's the one telling the story.

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction: Original Stories
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized primarily by... *ponders terminology* by universe, shall we say. Within each universe, I organized stories by timelines, by associated story cycles, or by degree of relation to the main story; the summaries should hopefully make the patterns clear. When the 'universe' is a category rather than a fully realized secondary world, the stories are arranged chronologically by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations. (Especially the writing dates. *headdesk*)

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: I am shamefully slow about my original writing, and I almost never seem to finish anything. Nonetheless, a fair amount of the following stories are complete, if only because I try to avoid posting those likely to be permanently unfinished. *sigh*

Also, a general advisory: you may or may not have noticed while reading my fanfic -- my quirks are somewhat disguised and/or mitigated by working in other people's universes -- but I am fascinated by ethics, religion, families and other social networks, sociology, history, culture clashes, world-building, and the nature and structure of truth and stories. I also have a strong tendency to focus on female characters. A lot of my original fiction is slower and more 'thinky' than a lot of my fanfic, and my issues show through more clearly.

None of these are necessarily bad things, but I figure it's only fair to tell you what to expect from my work. :)
