Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

For Everything Which Is Yes
---------------------------------------------

"You know I love you, but--"

Karla cuts Wilhelmina off mid-sentence. "That's a terrible way to start a conversation. Try again."

Wilhelmina snarls and brandishes a hairbrush as Karla limps into the bedchamber that would normally belong to the Glacian Consort, if such a male existed. She's still not sure whether it was sensible to accept these rooms, or whether she should have insisted that they wait until after Karla's Court had grown used to her presence to make such a blatant declaration. But Karla has never been one for caution.

"Fine. I don't want to wear this dress, I don't want to make myself pretty, and I don't want to go down to dinner so your entire Court can judge us."

Karla plucks the hairbrush from Wilhelmina's hands and tugs her down so they're seated side by side on the decadently soft bed. "Then don't. I have other people who can play politics. You don't need to be one of them." She runs the brush through Wilhelmina's hair once, twice, and then begins to separate it into dozens of sections, each held separate by a droplet of power.

Wilhelmina fidgets for a moment, then relaxes into the firm direction of Karla's fingers. "I refuse to put more weight on your shoulders instead of helping you carry what's already there. But I hate people staring at me. I hate strangers."

"I don't believe in strangers," Karla says as her fingers rapidly bring Wilhelmina's hair into order, weaving braids in and around each other in some pattern known only to herself. "There are just friends and enemies I haven't gotten to know yet."

Her words, however frivolous, always have the full force of her personality behind them. But Wilhelmina has learned that force isn't necessarily the same as threat, and in any case, it's good to practice sharpening her claws in safety so she won't forget them when it matters.

So she says, "That's hair-splitting. The definition of a stranger is a person you don't know yet."

"Ah, but the difference is that when you consider a faceless person you don't know, that person could be anyone and anything. Their shadow could grow and stretch into all kinds of horrors while you worry about how to deal with them and what they'll think of you." Karla stabs a trio of gold hairpins into the net of braids she's created, then calls in another handful and ponders where to apply them. "Whereas if you consider a potential friend or enemy, it's all very clear and straightforward. Be yourself. If they like you, make friends. If they don't, ignore them. And if they make trouble, destroy them. See? Simple."

The hairstyle is anything but simple, judging by how long it took Karla to construct, but it does look deceptively effortless until you realize exactly how many tiny braids loop in and around each other to create the glittering spiderweb effect. Wilhelmina is certain Karla's philosophy has similar layers if she cares to pick them apart.

Instead, she smiles and says, "I think I can manage ignoring people and even wreaking a small amount of vengeance, but I may need some pointers on making friends. I'll just have to stay pinned to your side all night, hang on your every word, and study your expressions as carefully as possible. One should always learn from the best."

"Flatterer," Karla says.

"Kiss kiss," Wilhelmina returns, and suits her actions to her words.

19. ) For [personal profile] jjhunter: any, any, a place beyond tears, written 12/27/18 [AO3 version]

That we can feel pain and know sadness (175 words)

"I did mostly all right until Elise from Accounting -- I got to know her because of some issues with my first paychecks, but that's a different story -- until she told me you'd gone to 'a place beyond tears,' and I just lost it and spent the next half hour choking on this horrible mix of ugly crying and completely inappropriate laughter," Karen says, fingers relaxed on the neck of her beer bottle; then she snorts and adds, "That always struck me as a terrifying idea, you know."

Matt makes an inquiring noise, the thrum of his voice in his chest vibrating pleasantly against Karen's skull where she's leaned back against his sternum.

Karen clicks her nails against the bottle, lets its cool solidity ground her the same way as Matt's equally solid warmth, and says, "Because to be beyond tears means to be something that isn't quite human anymore, and even if that's a good thing -- even if it means joy and relief from pain -- I've lost too many pieces of myself to ever give up another willingly."

20. ) For [personal profile] lady_katana4544: Any, Any, trying to not jump at the shadows when in polite company, written 12/28/18 [AO3 version]

And This Is Her Valley (75 words)

It's easier not to jump at shadows in Kaeleer, Wilhelmina reflects, though the realm itself is far darker and wilder than Tereille. Firstly, when a thing becomes commonplace, the sting of contrast fades and darkness becomes simply a trick of the light rather than a sign of something out of place.

And secondly, as Jaenelle said one evening with a smile like a knife of ice, "The only danger lurking in these shadows is me."

21. ) For [personal profile] syrena_of_the_lake: Dragons of Pern; Menolly and fire-lizards; joyful chorus, written 12/28/18 [AO3 version]

Notes in the Song of Creation (100 words exactly)

There were limits to how she could shape their song, but those were no different from any other formal strictures: keys, meters, the ranges of various instruments, to say nothing of the choking net of tradition tangled through her father's Seahold. In comparison to that, working around her fair's needs was as easy as breathing -- easier, even, as if she'd been drowning and now had found a boat.

Menolly sang as the sun danced and splintered on the wavetips; nine other voices joined her, joyfully, and in full knowledge that the music they sang was hers, and it was good.

As Iron Sharpens Iron (100 words exactly)

"We found her with blood on her teeth, she's a phase-independent were, what more evidence do you need?" the cop says as he leads Matt and Foggy through the station.

"Something that isn't purely circumstantial or blatantly prejudiced," Matt says, and then bites back a shiver of recognition as Karen Page's miserable, furious scent wafts from the open doorway, raising the hair on the back of his neck and pulling his lips into a smile too sharp and wild for the face he shows the daylight world.

His skin may not change like hers, but one predator always knows another.

"I have tracked the recent spate of spurious phone calls to this building, and I command you to remove all my family's numbers from your database immediately!" shouted the short, wild-haired man who'd just crashed through the ceiling of the call center next to Lacey's station and was now wreathed in a mix of flames, lightning, and particleboard dust.

"Or else what?" said Lacey's manager, showing a remarkable lack of common sense, especially since small objects were now starting to float and circle around the man as if drawn into a growing vortex.

The man smiled, showing teeth that seemed more pointed than standard, and raised a hand filled with a terrible, blinding glow. "Or else I burn this place to the ground... and then I give your names to my wife."

Lacey grabbed her purse from beside her chair and scrambled out of the room. She wasn't paid nearly enough for this.

24. ) For [personal profile] kalira: Inception, Arthur, expediency, written 12/29/18 [AO3 version]

Stiletto (50 words)

"Did you just put that projection's eye out with a shoe heel, darling?" Eames asked, nudging the body with an oddly fastidious toe.

"We're in Ms. Nandanampati's dressing room, it was right at hand, and unlike a gun it was quiet," Arthur snapped. "Now shut up while I imagine myself a set of lock picks."

edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
I have a scenario and backstory and some general world-building for my Palestuck fic. I have a kinda-sorta outline. I have a couple of key emotional beats, and an intertwined action and character arc/plot thingywhatsit.

And I have no fucking clue whose POV I should be in, let alone whether I should be trying to write in second or third person.

*headdesk*

You know what, screw this. I am going to do a mini-ficlet prompt meme after all, because desperate times call for desperate measures, and maybe if I kickstart myself into finishing something it will make my other projects flow better thereafter.

So.

Leave a comment with one to three characters plus a mood, a scenario, or a prompt word, and I will write you a ficlet that is at least three sentences and/or 100 words long.

(Obligatory small print: Crossover prompts are fine. On the vanishingly unlikely chance anyone wants to read a snippet from any of my original worlds and stories, that kind of prompt is also fine. I reserve the right to reject fandoms I am not familiar with and produce ambiguous gen when attempting to write shipfic.)

I did write the first draft of this in fifteen minutes, but it was very late at night and I wasn't happy with the results. So I came back the next day and spent another forty-five minutes on revisions. Oh well, so it goes.

Summary: The Darkness does not mix well with paradox space, nor does Craft mesh smoothly with the game mechanics of Sburb. Jade Harley makes plans to keep her friends safe despite the coming alteration of the natural laws they've relied on all their lives. (4,200 words)

Notes: This is a Homestuck/Black Jewels crossover fusion. Basically, I have shoved a bunch of Black Jewels world-building into the basic Homestuck setting. The beta kids are now Blood -- they have Jewels and castes and so on -- and this ability to touch the Darkness and use Craft interacts oddly with Sburb and paradox space. Dave and Dirk are Eyrien, because wings; Rose and Roxy are Dea al Mon, because dangerous women. (What, I need deeper reasons? *grin*)

[ETA: The slightly revised final version is now up on AO3!]

more background notes, probably not necessary to understand the story )

Anyway, I still think this is one of the most ridiculous and stupid ideas I've ever had, but apparently it really wanted to be written. So here, have a story.

When First We Practice To Deceive )

I may write some more random snippets in this AU -- mostly little world-building vignettes or character snapshots -- but no promises.

Yuletide reveal day!

I only wrote one story this year -- so much for grand intentions! But that single story is about eight and a half thousand words long, and I was sunk in a slough of depression for a good chunk of what should have been my prime writing time, so I count it a successful year nonetheless. :-)

Dreams From My Mother: Wilhelmina Benedict never knew her mother. That didn't stop Adria from shaping her daughter's life. (8,700 words) Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] Morbane.

Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series is one of my beloved guilty pleasures of the past decade. It has its fair share of issues, plot holes, and utter ridiculousness, but it hits a lot of my buttons Just Right, and so I forgive the world and the characters pretty much anything. *hands* What can you do?

Anyway, Morbane provided the following prompt: I would really like worldbuilding. The books focus on very high-powered characters, and I'd be delighted if you would instead explore life for Landens or lighter-jewelled Blood. The books cover a lot of mythical realms, a lot of major political shifts, and dramatic events - ways of life and changes to ways of life that affect everyone. Tell me some of these stories. Original characters very welcome! But if you have favourites among the nominated characters, take your favourite and write me an interaction with an obscure corner of canon.

I requested "any", and I realise you may have signed up to specifically write about Lucivar, or Surreal, or Wilhelmina, and OCs may not be your cup of tea. So I have optional thoughts on each of the nominated characters in my letter on livejournal.

With that in mind, I initially thought about hauling out and reworking a massively self-indulgent story set in Hayll after the end of Queen of the Darkness, which would need a LOT of fixing to make it compliant with the incidental world-building in The Shadow Queen and Shalador's Lady, but that's a novella-length story at the very least so I set that aside and started hunting for very minor canon characters and/or places where I thought an OC-centric story might illuminate something interesting about the world of the series. And for a while I was going to write about Lady Broghann (whose name you will not recognize because she was on-page for all of, I think, two pages, in "Zuulaman," which is a prequel story about Saetan's past contained in Dreams Made Flesh -- she is Mephis and Peyton's governess), but somehow I ended up thinking about Wilhelmina's mother instead.

Adria-of-no-canon-surname is mentioned in passing on one page of Daughter of the Blood, cut for canon blather and potential triggers )

Long story short, I decided to write about Adria from Wilhelmina's point of view, via stories people told Wilhelmina about her mother over the years. Initially this was going to extend all the way through "Kaeleer's Heart" (a story in Dreams Made Flesh, set about a year after Queen of the Darkness) and end in Scelt with Jaenelle finally telling Wilhelmina about having met Adria in Hell, and maybe an exchange of a letter Adria had written for her daughter before she returned to the Darkness, but as I wrote the timeframe of the story compressed itself a LOT and I wound up ending on what, in my original outline, was the fifth of nine planned scenes. The story also ended up being much more about Wilhelmina and her family in general than about Wilhelmina and her mother specifically, but I like to think that Adria is still a notable presence (or absence) throughout the fic.
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
Happy New Year! Also, it is Yuletide reveal day! I wrote six fics in six different fandoms, for a total of ~10,000 words. I have listed them in the order I wrote them.

-----

1 ) A Woman with Silver Eyes: Kate Welker, the Rolling Stone Interview -- The Girl with the Silver Eyes - Willo Davis Roberts, 3,750 words. Twenty-five years after the Institute of Psychic Phenomena went public, Rolling Stone interviews Kate Welker, one of the Curtis Pharmaceuticals quartet and a long-time activist for both animal rights and the acceptance of the psychically gifted. Background Katie/OFC. (Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] Macadamanaity.)

Thoughts: This is not the fandom I was matched on... )

-----

2 ) Loopholes -- The Homeward Bounders - Diana Wynne Jones, 2,650 words. There's no rule saying you can't have more than one anchor. (Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] anait.)

Thoughts: Anait asked for a way to make Jamie happy, which is the next best thing to impossible... )

-----

3 ) Self Made -- Lucifer, 250 words. How Mazikeen chose her face. (Written for nextian, aka [archiveofourown.org profile] cosmogyral.)

Thoughts: When the list of all prompts went up, I looked at the pinch hitters' requests first... )

-----

4 ) Healing -- Black Jewels - Anne Bishop, 1,400 words. Wilhelmina Benedict visits her sister after Queen of the Darkness. Background Daemon/Jaenelle. (Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] random_chick.)

Thoughts: This is another pinch hitter request... )

-----

5 ) Dum vivimus, vivamus -- Seaward - Susan Cooper, 800 words. Caught between grief for her parents and longing for Westerly, Cally dreams of Snake. Mild Cally/Snake. (Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] pikkugen.)

Thoughts: I wrote a Seaward fic for lesserstorm two years ago. When pikkugen commented on it earlier this year... )

-----

6 ) As You Wish -- The Dark Is Rising - Susan Cooper, 1,125 words. Will was the one who kept them all together. Bran was the one who thought to ask why he bothered. Mild Will/Bran. (Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] Aishuu.)

Thoughts: This is basically an interest payment for taking so long to finish 'Friends and Neighbors'... )

---------------------------------------------

Yuletide statistics

This is the fourth year I have participated in Yuletide. The first year (on the old archive) I wrote one story at 4,200 words. The second year I wrote six stories for a total of 7,400 words; the longest was 2,800 words and the shortest 150. The third year I only wrote two stories (on account of being in Seville), one at 7,200 words and the other at 1,600, for a total of 8,800. This year I was back up to six stories, for a combined total of 10,000 words; the longest was 3,750 words and the shortest 250.

So my total word count has gone up each year, though the number of fics is all over the place.

I seem to write a lot of Diana Wynne Jones and Susan Cooper stories for Yuletide -- two for The Homeward Bounders, two for Hexwood, two for Seaward, and two for The Dark Is Rising. That is 8 of 15 stories, or half my total output. The other stories are a scattershot mix: one for American Gods, one for the Book of Ruth, one for Meredith Pierce's The Darkangel trilogy, one Enchanted Forest Chronicles/Hikaru no Go crossover fusion, one for The Girl with the Silver Eyes, one for Lucifer, and one for the Black Jewels series.

The thing to note about these is that they are all text-based canons rather than audiovisual, and the majority of them are YA fantasy novels. Clearly I have a Yuletide type -- or, more accurately, these are the fandoms I know well enough to write something pretty much off the top of my head, or am just so ridiculously in love with that I carry the books to my parents' house with plans to write treats.

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Miscellaneous Fandoms
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized alphabetically by fandom. Within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles (if applicable) and then by date.

Notes: Outside of my main fandoms, my fanfiction writing tends toward resolving plotholes and other canon problems, the creation of backstory (which is itself a form of problem-solving, where the problem is a gap in canon information about a character or an event), or prompt responses (often for Yuletide). Therefore, almost all the stories on this page are an expression of dissatisfaction with canon, of curiosity about what lies behind the canon we see, or of an attempt to satisfy somebody else's heart's desire. Once I've resolved a problem, filled a gap to my own satisfaction, or answered a prompt, I generally have nothing further to write in that fandom, which is why these subsections have so few stories.

Anyway, there's a lot of random stuff on this page, and some of it I look back on and wonder what on earth I was thinking, but overall I do like most of these stories -- probably because when something bugs me so much that I write a story to fix or explain it, or when I am writing to make someone else happy, I care enough to give my best effort.

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.

This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: My approach to crossovers is to take a stupid and/or ridiculous idea -- because crossing two separate secondary worlds is almost always a silly thing to do -- and treat it as realistically as possible, paying particular attention to characterization. I figure that I'm asking readers to suspend so much disbelief over jamming two series together that I'd better not push on any other aspect. Also, I feel the point of a crossover is to have characters from different canons meet -- or at least to have characters from one canon react to a different canon world -- so if you aren't writing them in-character, why are you even bothering? *grin*

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.
