Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
Today is NFE reveal day! I wrote three stories this year: one assignment, one pinch hit, and one tiny Madness ficlet. I will talk about each in a separate post.

White Lady of the Eastern Sea: In the third year of her conquest, Jadis locked Aslan out of Narnia and plunged that country into endless winter. But there are other powers in the world, and not all of them are pleased at the sudden changes. (1,725 words, written for [archiveofourown.org profile] redsnake05)

-----

This was my assignment! It is also absolutely not the story I intended to write, as is sadly standard for me with exchanges.

"White Lady of the Eastern Sea" is not exactly a response to any of [archiveofourown.org profile] redsnake05's prompts, though it makes gestures towards two of them. The first prompt was for a story about the various deities of Narnia: "How they relate to Narnia, their relationships with each other, the role of the Emperor-over-the-Sea, what powers they have, what happened in Narnia before Time started, and so on." The second prompt was for a story about Jadis, specifically: "What was it about Narnia that she so desperately wanted, that she couldn't get in Archenland or Calormen?"

I was going to write a story about gods. Not my Calormene pantheon, because that would have tossed all pretense of anonymity out the window, but a different pantheon that is in some ways equally dear to my heart.

Let me set the stage.

way more than you ever wanted to know about my approach to world-building and religion; seriously, this is long )

Oh, and one last thing. The definition of godhood that Allinwy gives Jadis is a paraphrase of the definition of godhood Sethra Lavode gives Vlad Taltos in Steven Brust's Dragaera series, specifically in chapter two of Issola: "The gods are beings who are able to manifest in at least two places at once, and yet who are not subject to the forcible control of any other being; this latter marking the difference between a god and a demon." That's not the whole truth of things in that series, and it isn't the whole truth in this story either, but it's a useful first approximation. *grin*

December 22: mapping worlds and fandoms, cont'd (for [livejournal.com profile] joyeuce01) [Tumblr crosspost]

This world happened because of a high school writing assignment. No, seriously! I wrote a really terrible story about a woman and her lover fleeing into the western wilderness, and a confrontation they had with corrupt local law enforcement which ended when it turned out the woman was a witch and magically clobbered the asshole who had been threatening to rape her and kill her lover. Then I couldn't stop thinking about the world I'd implied around the edges of the narrative, and it got a little out of hand.

World-building has a tendency to do that around me. *wry*

a lot of blather and then a bunch of maps )

I really need to get back to writing in this world. I remember enjoying it a lot!

December Talking Meme: All Days
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
Sometimes current events blow dust off old story ideas that I'd thought were lying dormant. This is from a universe I created back in 1999 as the side effect of a high school creative writing assignment. I was thinking mostly about Northern Ireland and the Palestinian territories at the time, but reading about Libya tonight brought my secondary world back to life, at least a little.

Ketchy Wicking, called Ironheart, is central to the history of the Tarranny Isles, but I've tended to write her sideways, glimpsed briefly in other people's stories. This is a slightly more direct approach. (150 words)

Toward Justice )

---------------------------------------------

And then, of course, she was captured and gruesomely executed. Which had the unintended side effect of making her a martyr and kicking off a more effective rebellion than she ever would have managed to rouse if she'd lived, though it took several long and bloody years before the Shanish king died and his heir, who had pressing internal problems to deal with, relinquished his claim to (most of) the Tarranny Isles and called his armies home.

...I really must do more with that world someday.

So last night I worked on 'Apartment Manager.' Didn't write any actual story, but I filled in background on Yukiko's family (important for scene two), assigned skills to the various teams that passed the second test, and worked out the matches for the third test. That was interesting. See, there were certain people I wanted to have fight each other, but some matches precluded other matches, and I ended up picking random names a few times and resorting to coin tosses to determine outcomes.

I think it will be interesting, though. Not that I'm going into excessive detail on all the matches, but it would be kind of silly to write about the tournament and not show any fighting!

Here is an excerpt from "Nothing More, Nothing Less" (an original story, part of my "Ironheart's War" cycle) to tide you over. Warning: war and blood and death and post-traumatic stress. (Yeah, so the inside of my head isn't always a nice place. I live with it.)

Nothing More, Nothing Less: Paplewick )

And on a happier note, I got 10 reviews overnight for 'Definitions of Romance' on ff.net. Someone also said I should post it on Portkey. [livejournal.com profile] annearchy, how would I go about doing that?

This is sort of by way of an apology for all my whining about the weather. I can't think enough to write anything new, but I dug this out of my archives.

It's kind of the first third of an original story. Not quite my usual style -- it's present tense and uses WAY more description than I usually do -- but it wanted to be written this way.

Blessed Are the Meek )

---------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, I did talk to the college people, only to discover that I need to talk to different people who actually have the answers I want. Grrr. So I went to the library and took out some books on military history, which is always useful to keep in mind when writing fantasy epic things. 'Cause war is messy, and knights in shining armor? Very inefficient way to manage an army, really. The horses in particular are mad expensive.

*hugs her wonderful nonfiction tightly*

I felt like writing something random today, so here is a new 15 minute fic. It's original, not fanfiction, and is a bit of a character study. Eilonnua belongs to a world I have been writing about for several years now. She's only peripherally involved in most of my stories, but indirectly influences a number of them. This vignette is set shortly after the worst time of her life, as she struggles to hold things together.

Dissolution )

Random stuff from my life: I've been reading Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. It's an interesting book. I was expecting to feel righteous indignation at the exposed ugliness of the right, but instead all I can feel is a sort of weary pity. All these right-wing figures come off more as pathetic losers who can't even admit when they were wrong, instead of fearsome opponents. It's a weird effect for me as a reader.

And it's Cat's birthday. Happy Birthday, Cat! (Hmmm. I should call her.)

That's about it.
