Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Chronicles of Narnia
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized by associated narrative cycles; within each section, stories are arranged first by timeline (if applicable) and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: I tried not to fall into this fandom. I really, really tried. But I reread all seven books and there's so much to love! There are also several lifetimes' worth of loose ends to tie up, empty spaces to fill, backstory to create, and theological ideas to dig out, explain, and either affirm or denounce with extreme prejudice. I have a terrible feeling I may be writing here for a while.

All stories are book canon only unless specifically noted. This is because I never consider filmizations canon. They're just somebody else's vaguely AU retelling of the true story. Please also note that while I am not Christian, I do consider Lewis's theology an integral -- albeit infuriating and inconsistent -- part of his world-building, so most of these stories will have religious and/or philosophical elements to some degree. I am trying to work out my issues as I go. *grin*

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.

The Lost Chronicles of Narnia

This began as my attempt to make sense of Jadis and put her in context, as it were. However, most of my other Narnian stories are also part of this unified timeline, so it has grown much less Jadis-centric over time. The stories are listed in chronological order, insofar as that was possible. For instance, "A High and Lonely Destiny" begins before "Parallel" but continues until immediately before "No Light Oath," "Do not stand at my grave and weep," takes place in the middle of "Tribute," and "Little Sister" takes place during the fourth section of "The Corners of the World" -- rather like HHB takes place sometime during the last chapter of LWW.

Stories set in Charn are placed normally on the timeline, since Jadis's life makes a coherent narrative thread between Charn and Narnia and nobody ever returns to Charn to complicate the issue. Stories set in England, on the other hand, are placed in little offsets at the ends of the sections for their associated books, since they occur in a different world whose timeline has sod-all to do with the Narnian world's timeline beyond obeying thermodynamics and thus running in the same general direction.

The 'Problem' of Susan

Unlike the Lost Chronicles, these stories do not share continuity. (Even the sequel is less a strict sequel and more a related thought experiment.) This is because what fascinates me most about Susan is her separation from her family in The Last Battle, and I do not have anything remotely like a defined headcanon about the reason for that separation and loss of faith, nor about what becomes of her afterwards. Besides, keeping my options open is useful for testing meta theories. *grin*

Endurance: (AO3 version; ff.net.version) 675 words, April 2009. "The thing is," Susan tells Edmund once, "you have to live in the world you're given." (The obligatory 'problem of Susan' fic everyone in this fandom seems to write sooner or later. *sigh*) Implicit discussion of theology. [15-minute fic]

("Endurance" was remixed by [archiveofourown.org profile] furies in RemixRedux 9, as Once a Queen (The Reality Bites Remix): Susan, and Narnia. What a tangled web we weave.)

Remembrance: (AO3 version; ff.net version) 875 words, March 2010. One potential continuation of Endurance, written nominally in the form of a human interest news article on the inclusion of Dr. Susan Pevensie in the Church of England's calendar of Common Worship. (Yes, really. No, I have no idea what I was thinking either.) [Request!fic for [livejournal.com profile] uminohikari]

*Form and Function: (AO3 version; ff.net version) 575 words, Sept. 2009. Aslan is a lion, utterly and undeniably. Susan finds this hard to reconcile with an equally undeniable correspondence that Lucy points out. Discussion of theology. [15-minute fic]

I was thinking something later in her life, with her trying to continue living an ordinary life. Regarding Aslan, I tend to think that she would probably continue rejecting Narnia and yet I also kind of hope that at the end of her life she will be able to see her family again. However, I'm sort of curious how her day to day life is, which is not complete connected to Narnia, if that makes sense? [Request!fic for [livejournal.com profile] silverblade219]

To All Good Will: (AO3 version; ff.net version) 600 words, Jan. 2011. Five letters exchanged between Susan and Edmund Pevensie in the week leading up to Christmas 1948. [15-minute fic]

**Between the Light and Darkness: (AO3 version) 800 words, Oct. 2018. "Every world is a bubble," Susan says, "a fragile bubble we build despite the darkness, and tend with mercy, patience, and faith. If everyone who heard the call chased it to the ends of the earth, who would be left to keep the sunlight kindled?" Prompt: chiaroscuro. Written for [community profile] ladiesbingo. As the Morning and the Night - genderswap AU

This is a thought experiment wherein the four Pevensies were born with the opposite sex and gender from canon. In other words, instead of Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, they are Mary, Stephen, Edith, and Laurence (called Laurie). I am trying to see what effect that would have on Lewis's characterization and plot, since he relies so heavily on gender assumptions as a shorthand in LWW. So far, all I have are a few character study snippets, but someday I may give in and write the full alternate version of the Pevensies' first time in Narnia, from LWW through HHB. (If I get to VDT, I might flip Eustace into Eunice, but so far, only the Pevensies are altered.)

Fester Like a Sore: (AO3 version) 575 words, Sept. 2010. When Edith is very young, she wants to be exactly like Mary. This doesn't last. [15-minute fic]

Summer of '39: (AO3 version) 1,275 words, Sept. 2010. The year before the Pevensies go to Narnia, their family is falling apart. Stephen makes the best of it, as much as he can.

Anchor Points: (AO3 version) 550 words, Oct. 2010. Laurie's world always makes sense, even if his siblings don't see what he does. [15-minute fic]

How Does Your Garden Grow?: (AO3 version) 2,225 words, May 2011. Mary Pevensie and her family: a character study in three parts. (Beware of excessive angst and melodrama.)

*Winter in the Shade: (AO3 version) 525 words, June 2015. Years later, Edith still missed the crisp silence of that handful of days, the clear cadence of Jadis's voice as she talked about Charn, about law, about power. About magic. [15-minute fic]

*The Spell Begins To Break: (AO3 version) 1,075 words, May 2011. Laurie, Stephen, and Mary receive their gifts from Father Christmas.

*Maxims and Verses: (AO3 version) 825 words, Sept. 2010. Upon leaving Tashbaan, Edith writes Rabadash a poem. He declares war in response. Edith/Rabadash. [15-minute fic]

*Come Close to Your Own World: (AO3 version) 4,375 words, Aug. 2014. The Pevensies can only take one child with them to America. Mary is the logical choice -- she's the eldest, and the only one who has any interest in Father's work -- but she's not sure that's a good idea. Prompt: unexpected love. And a tiny AU of this AU, because I can do that if I want to. :)

*the mournful kingdom of sand: (AO3 version) 125 words, Jan. 2018. A hundred years of summer and never a drop of rain. Written for anonymous in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2017.

The Way the World Ends: (AO3 version) 275 words, March 2018. Jadis takes a deep breath and sets her feet and shoulders before she begins to speak the Deplorable Word. That moment is her undoing. Prompt: apocalypse. Written for [community profile] genprompt_bingo.

Everything Else

This is a catch-all for everything that doesn't fit into my Lost Chronicles timeline, without comprising enough of a category on its own to have a separate section. So there's one fic that ended up set in Disney film canon, one fic in Aslan's Country that I'm not sure can be put into a timeline, one fic that almost fits into the Lost Chronicles except for a single character's name, and a bunch of random AUs, mostly written in response to prompts.

Babel: 600 words, March 2009. Susan and Edmund talk about linguistics, post-LWW. Meta thinly cloaked by dialogue. (Disney movie canon, because I failed to do my research thoroughly enough. *makes face* Please read the revised book canon version instead.) [15-minute fic]

Birds in the Hand: (AO3 version) 250 words, Dec. 2011. The Thiefmaker takes an apprentice. She may live to regret her choice. Prompt: Edmund Pevensie, pickpocket!AU, jack of all trades. Crime, child abuse, prostitution. Written for [livejournal.com profile] caramelsilver in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2011.

*Wrong Turn at Albuquerque: (AO3 version) 275 words, Dec. 2011. There are many doors between worlds, even within Aslan's Country. Prompt: Pevensies & Tirian, "I don't think this is where we're supposed to be." Written for [livejournal.com profile] snacky in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2011.

always at a price: (AO3 version) 150 words, March 2013. Jadis's magic food wakes more than one kind of hunger. Prompt: Narnia, Any, vampire!AU. Written for [personal profile] lady_songsmith in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2013.

*call that a bargain: (AO3 version) 200 words, March 2013. A continuation of the above AU, now with added Lucy being awesome!

grand tour: (AO3 version) 325 words, June 2013. Three weeks after Peter closed the stable door, Eustace turned to Jill and said, "Let's go home." [15-minute fic]

What Might Have Been, What May Yet Be: (AO3 version) 425 words, Dec. 2013. "You have been touched by the Deep Magic. Few emerge unchanged from such an encounter." Prompt: Edmund's encounter with the White Witch turns him into a mage. Written for Doctordolly in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2013.

*Without Any External or Physical Form: (AO3 version) 1,275 words, Dec. 2013. Lucy and Mr. Tumnus discuss history and hypotheticals over tea, in the second summer after the end of the Witch's reign. Daemon AU. Written for [livejournal.com profile] betonyb in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2013.

**Bitter Work: 2,075 words, Sept. 2014. Things always work according to their nature. If any Narnian, unbidden, had stolen an apple and planted it here to protect Narnia... Peridan, Tumnus, and the rest of the privy council consider their options post-LWW. Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] cofax in the Narnia Fic Exchange 2014.

*Start of Line: 2,550 words, Oct. 2014. Lucy looks around, wondering what makes the Professor's workshop so dangerous. At first glance, she can't see anything special: just a bunch of computers on a rack and a half-dozen monitors scattered about to no apparent plan, each surrounded by drifts of notepaper and graph paper. But then one monitor switches from its screensaver -- snow falling onto pine trees -- to a black screen with a single line of text. Lucy steps closer, curious. <Hello?> the computer says again. The cursor blinks in silent invitation. Alternate universe, Tron fusion. Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] songsmith in NFE Madness 2014.

*Hierogamy: (AO3 version) 150 words, Jan. 2015. There is only ever one human family allowed to live in Narnia. Susan & Edmund, implied incest. Written for [livejournal.com profile] vialethe in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2014/2015.

*Follow the Story (One Queen, Bearing Gifts): 1,825 words, June 2015. On Ramandu's island, Lucy and the Star's daughter speak of stories, choices, and new beginnings. Written for Remix Madness 2015, based on Follow the Star by [personal profile] rthstewart.

Meta

Not actually fic, but kind of interesting in its own right, and also useful if you want to understand my approach to canon. *grin*

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: Disney vs. BBC: Wherein I analyze the two most popular filmizations of the story and compare them to each other and the book.

Thoughts on Prince Caspian: Wherein Disney attempts to hit every sympathetic embarrassment squick button I have, as well as invent plot out of whole cloth. At least the political maneuvering is cool and the battle staging makes more sense than in their version of LWW. *wry*

A Theory about Narnian Linguistics: Wherein I argue that A) the Narnian world has a universal language that does not experience linguistic drift, and B) that language is English. Trust me on this.

Thoughts on Calormen, Part One and Part Two: Wherein I do a lot of world-building and attempt to mitigate some of Lewis's racism, ethnocentrism, and religious insensitivity along the way.

Thoughts on Narnian Calendars: Wherein I try to make sense of Lewis's calendrical inconsistencies and wind up more frustrated than successful. (Please read the comments; there's lots of interesting discussion there!)

Narnian Timelines: Definitive timelines for the world of Narnian, the world of Charn, and the world of England, as seen in my interconnected fanfiction. Also contains a bunch of incidental world-building for Calormen and Archenland, because yay world-building!
