Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

This is a request!fic for [livejournal.com profile] silverblade219, who wanted a sequel to The Two Secretive Princesses, which is part of a novel-length Avatar: The Last Airbender/Enchanted Forest Chronicles fusion that I am still determinedly not writing.

I went for something approximating a direct sequel after all. This happens fairly early in the story, not all that long before Aang meets Katara and Sokka. It is probably the worst thing that happens in the over-arching plot (well, along with Ozai's treatment of South Wolf River and the college of magicians where Aang grew up), and is much more tonally in line with Avatar than with the Enchanted Forest Chronicles elements of the fusion. Oops?

Toph and Mai during the invasion of Toure-on-Marsh. (925 words)

The War of Secret Flames: Silent Screams )

Well, that was depressing.

All three of them make it safely to the end of the story, Mai and Ty Lee switch sides, Toph's parents get un-petrified, and it turns out that at least 80% of the people in the castle survived as well. Still, a lot of people died, and died horribly. This is what happens when Ozai decides to conquer all the countries around the Mountains of Morning and make magic-users rule over non-magical people.

ETA! The story was so depressing that I wrote an alternate version to be a better tonal fit with the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I am not sure yet which version is the 'real' one, but I am leaning toward this new one, since I am trying to slide the Avatar characters into the Enchanted Forest world rather than vice versa, and the Enchanted Forest has strong implicit canon about what level of realism and darkness is allowed.

So. Let's try this again: Toph and Mai during the invasion of Toure-on-Marsh, take two. (1,025 words)

The War of Secret Flames: Turn to Stone )

Still not fluffy-happy, but at least nobody (or hardly anybody) seems to have died. Also, I got to mention Aunt Ermintrude. I am quite fond of Aunt Ermintrude. :-)

Found via [livejournal.com profile] askerian:

Pick one of my stories and I will tell you the first line (ETA: okay, the first few paragraphs, on the theory that context is more interesting than concision) of its sequel. Even if I was never actually planning to write a sequel. Even if it already has a sequel -- I'll give you the first line of another version of its sequel!

Do not ask me about "Strange Likenesses," because I don't yet know how that will end (basically, there is the wildly unlikely happy ending, several variants of the rather likely inconclusive ending, and the semi-likely 'rocks fall, everyone dies' ending). Everything else is fair game.

Sequel snippets written so far:

for The Way of the Apartment Manager (So how did Naruto wind up friends with Sakura by the start of "Guardian"? I will probably continue this at some point.)

for Lemonade (Thus proving that I do so know where the story's going.)

for Endurance (This one turned into an actual fic, 900 words long. *headdesk* I am not sure how 'canon' this sequel is, though, as I'd left "Endurance" inconclusive for a reason.)

for New Horizons (ie, the story in which Ginny, Harry, and Draco have a post-DH-epilogue threesome in Greece. Naturally there are repercussions. *grin*)

for The Two Secretive Princesses (925 words on Toph and Mai during Ozai's invasion of Toure-on-Marsh. Rather dark.)
---[[or the more canonical version, which includes fewer deaths and more mentions of Aunt Ermintrude]]

This is another prequel piece to the Avatar/Enchanted Forest fusion that I am not writing. Katara is nine in the first section and eleven in the second, so it ends three years before the main story starts.

Katara and Ursa: families, loss, and compassion. (Also laundry.)

The War of Secret Flames: What You Wish For )

That was really kind of random. I was not expecting Ursa to be involved in Katara's backstory at all, but at least now I know what became of her after she had to leave Veritand in a rush.

Still watching Avatar! Here are some thoughts on season 2 episode 9:

Bitter Work )

Well, that was an unexpected downer of an ending.

I am really not sure what to say. I mean, the episode started out feeling like filler, but then there was serious discussion and character moments and stuff, and the whole Sokka-in-the-crevice sequence was hilarious, and oh, Zuko, break my heart, why don't you???

So yeah. Emotional whiplash up the wazoo. I am going to have to sleep on this one.

Still watching Avatar! Here are some thoughts on season 2 episode 8:

The Chase )

That episode was intense. Some serious moments of logic fail and logistics/engineering fail, but overall, I am more than willing to forgive those flaws since I got such a lot of great character interaction, kickass fight scenes, and humor. (I am telling you, the bit with the house with no second story floor? I almost fell out of my chair. Literally.)

*pause* Wait, there is a commentary track on this one! *watches with commentary*

Some comments on the commentary )

So yeah, that explains a few things. It would have been better to get the explanation within the episode, but I will take what I can get. *grin*

I am collecting the previous two snippets of the Avatar/Enchanted Forest fusion of DOOM that I am not really writing (seriously, I'm not! *crickets chirp*) for the sake of convenient reference. So. 650 words featuring Zuko, Morwen, Sokka, and Toph, with incidental appearances of Katara, Aang, and various cats, plus mentions of other characters.

These snippets are actually separated by, oh, at least a couple weeks and a lot of potential story -- though I grant you, a fair amount of that time is taken up by people traveling and, in Zuko's case, figuring out where to travel, because he is heading off to find the wizards' new secret headquarters and blow it up (Jet helps) -- but they bookend each other neatly, so I am sticking them together.

The Enemy of My Enemy... )

...Is NOT My Friend )

...It is very bad of me to have, like, a novel's worth of outline at this point, right? *headdesk*

Anyway, bed now. I have to get up early in the morning.

Here is another Avatar/Enchanted Forest crossover snippet. This is set two years before the story proper (which starts with Aang meeting Katara and Sokka, as per canon), but is useful in establishing some of the changes this world has made to the Avatar characters and situations.

Toph and Mai (and background Zuko), completely gen. 650 words.

The War of Secret Flames: The Two Secretive Princesses )

This is like crack, I swear. And really not what I need to be writing. First I need to write my Yuletide fic. (For which I now, at least, have a firm idea. Yay progress?) Then I need to finish the untitled Star Trek thing. Then I need to get back to "Secrets" and make the damn story end sometime before I turn twenty-eight. *headdesk*
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (sun on the water)
You know how I know that I am crazy? In my free moments at work this evening, and during the last couple hours at home, I plotted almost 90% of an epic Avatar: the Last Airbender/Enchanted Forest Chronicles fusion-style crossover. (The idea being that all the Avatar characters are part of the Enchanted Forest world, and always have been.) It's notably fluffier than Avatar canon -- it kind of has to be; the Enchanted Forest world isn't built for angst -- but it keeps a surprising amount of the general story the same, and I think the changes are organic.

About the only thing I have not figured out is exactly how, when, and why Zuko got his scar. He has to have the scar -- I am not sure why, but he doesn't seem properly Zuko without it -- but the way the backstory is arranged, I am not sure what he would have done to provoke his father, or what exactly he got punished with instead of being sent on a wild goose chase to 'find the Avatar.' Because in this world, he's still in contact with his family at the start of the story, and is, in fact, actively working for them... albeit in a very non-central role.

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] askerian

1. Write down the names of 10 characters.
2. Write a fic of fifteen words or more for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. DO NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.

...I feel like making extra work for myself (or indulging in crack, whichever), so I am going crossover-happy. *bright smile*

1. Zuko (exiled prince of the Fire Nation; Avatar: The Last Airbender)
2. Sokka (companion of the Avatar; Avatar: The Last Airbender)
3. Mazikeen (Lucifer's lover and war leader of the Lillim; Lucifer)
4. Belial (chief among the seven Satans; Angel Sanctuary)
5. Kurai (princess and dragon master of the Evils; Angel Sanctuary)
6. Nyota Uhura (communications officer on the Enterprise; Star Trek: AOS)
7. Spock (first officer and science officer on the Enterprise; Star Trek: AOS)
8. Morwen (no-nonsense witch; The Enchanted Forest Chronicles)
9. Irrylath (prince of Avaric and former winged vampire; The Darkangel)
10. Kazul (king of the dragons; The Enchanted Forest Chronicles)

Collective Warnings: implied dubious consent, implied death, and implied dragons eating other sentient beings. Also a lot of crack.
