Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

Summary: After the shocking reveal of Merlin's magic in the midst of a diplomatic mission to Narnia, Lucy and Peter take Merlin north on campaign against the giants. Going to war is a strange method of protection and healing, but necessity is the mother of improvisation. Crossover: Chronicles of Narnia/Merlin (BBC). [900 words]

Note: I wrote this in response to a comment [archiveofourown.org profile] ArtificialStupidity left some time ago (*cough* three years *cough*) on Inconvenient Truths: I have to say that if you ever feel so inclined, I would read the heck out of a drabble about Merlin, Peter, and Lucy fighting giants and swapping stories around the campfire! This is not that story, but it's apparently the story I needed to write before I could write the one that was requested. Sometimes that's just how life goes. *wry*

[ETA: the AO3 crosspost is now up!]

The Stillness Before the Thaw )

---------------------------------------------

In non-fic-writing news, I have been working my way through the Narnia Fic Exchange archive. As always, the story quality is very high... and this year we even have two art fills, which is new and exciting! I am doing my best to comment on every fic, which is my periodic tithe to the feedback gods.

I also have the Camry back from Goodyear with its power steering once again fully functional, so that's nice.

What else, what else...?

Last night I attended my second church Board of Trustees meeting as a board member. I must remember to bring a coloring book and some well-sharpened colored pencils next time, so I'll be able to maintain concentration. I got by well enough with doodling, but doodles require a certain amount of creative thought -- one must decide WHAT to draw, after all -- which distracts from listening and contributing in a way that just coloring in somebody else's linework doesn't.

Today I've been doing some tasks around the house, and will probably do a few more this evening. I walked into town to run a couple errands. And I've been working to pare down my email inboxes, which had gotten annoyingly cluttered over the past few weeks.

I'm also thinking of poking around the Remix Madness prompt list to see if anything catches my eye. I haven't been in the best place to write for a few weeks, what with work and other stuff (hence why my email inboxes had gotten cluttered, among other symptoms), but it's always nice to play a little. :)

I am bored and attempting to stay awake. I am also, alas, out of inspiration for all my WIPs. So am I asking for prompts!

Give me a character or ship PLUS a scenario | setting | mood | line of dialogue, and I will try to write you a three sentence ficlet.

ETA: Prompts are closed! Thank you to everyone who contributed. :-)

Remix reveal day! I wrote three stories this year: Sacrifices (Backwards and in High Heels) for [archiveofourown.org profile] aviss, Problems and Solutions (All Things in Time) for [archiveofourown.org profile] cofax, and Down in the Deep (The Index of Refraction) for [archiveofourown.org profile] significantowl.

I am going to talk about each in a separate post.

---------------

Down in the Deep (The Index of Refraction): 450 words, April 2012. Now her breath is water. And they are still not the same. Freya/Merlin.

Remixed from Down in the Deep, a fic by [personal profile] significantowl.

Confession: I have only ever seen four episodes of Merlin, and they were the first four of series one. So I have never actually seen Freya. But! [personal profile] significantowl's fic is so lovely, and I wanted to say thank you for her beta job on my assigned remix, so I dashed this off in a hurry.

It's about miscommunication, I think, between two people who genuinely care about and for each other but who come from different backgrounds and don't see the world the same way even when they use the same words. It's also an excuse to play with language and elemental symbolism and stuff -- sometimes, I just want to write something pretty. Hopefully I succeeded!

(The remix subtitle is something I am very happy about in this case, because I spent about half an hour trying to think of some water-related quote before I finally hit on the idea that miscommunication is similar to the way objects appear to disjoint and bend at the interface between water and air. Hence refraction. *grin*)

I am up to 40 fills over at the Three Sentence Ficathon, god help me (though three of them are really for the same prompt). So it is time for another catch-all post!

I am still not very good at the three sentence limit, though I did manage to wrestle seven of the following fills back into the constraints of the form. \o/

I will post the girl!Arthur/Eames fics tonight or tomorrow. Now I am off to fold laundry. Ah, laundry. So necessary, yet so evil.
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
I've filled 21 prompts, though only two of them actually managed to stay within the three sentence limit. I am so bad at length restrictions. *hides face* (I did get another one down to four sentences! That's not too far off, right? And one of the multi-sentence ficlets is only a hundred words long... *makes feeble excuses*)

Anyway, eleven of them are responses to one person asking for a specific scenario in a specific fandom -- Inception, girl!Arthur/Eames, for [livejournal.com profile] be_themoon -- and they all fit into a unified timeline. So I'm going to post those separately.

All the other random stuff (so far) is in this post. *grin*

1. Storm Warning - Doctor Who/Narnia )

2. Loyalty - Merlin )

3. Tribute - Chronicles of Narnia )

More to come, probably. Dammit, why can I not find this level of inspiration for my actual fics???

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Miscellaneous Fandoms
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized alphabetically by fandom. Within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles (if applicable) and then by date.

2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: Outside of my main fandoms, my fanfiction writing tends toward resolving plotholes and other canon problems, the creation of backstory (which is itself a form of problem-solving, where the problem is a gap in canon information about a character or an event), or prompt responses (often for Yuletide). Therefore, almost all the stories on this page are an expression of dissatisfaction with canon, of curiosity about what lies behind the canon we see, or of an attempt to satisfy somebody else's heart's desire. Once I've resolved a problem, filled a gap to my own satisfaction, or answered a prompt, I generally have nothing further to write in that fandom, which is why these subsections have so few stories.

Anyway, there's a lot of random stuff on this page, and some of it I look back on and wonder what on earth I was thinking, but overall I do like most of these stories -- probably because when something bugs me so much that I write a story to fix or explain it, or when I am writing to make someone else happy, I care enough to give my best effort.

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Crossovers
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized in vaguely chronological order, counting from the start of each series or multi-chapter story. Memes and miscellaneous one-shots are at the bottom of the page.

Notes: My approach to crossovers is to take a stupid and/or ridiculous idea -- because crossing two separate secondary worlds is almost always a silly thing to do -- and treat it as realistically as possible, paying particular attention to characterization. I figure that I'm asking readers to suspend so much disbelief over jamming two series together that I'd better not push on any other aspect. Also, I feel the point of a crossover is to have characters from different canons meet -- or at least to have characters from one canon react to a different canon world -- so if you aren't writing them in-character, why are you even bothering? *grin*

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.
