Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

[Fic] "Finding Marea," part 1 -- original

The hard copy still hasn't reached Cat, but I am going to post this anyway, just so I can stop worrying about it. It's divided into three sections, with a separate post for an author's note. This is only because the story is 16,000+ words long, and wouldn't fit in one post; it's really a very long one-shot.

Part 3

(For the curious, an early draft of Ifira's version of Marea's story is posted here.)

[Fic] "Finding Marea: Truth and Change in the Circle of Kemar" -- original story

Summary: "Listen, and I will tell you a story. Do not write the story. Writing will freeze it; writing will kill it. Everything always changes; what does not change is dead." A meditation on the nature of truth and faith, refracted through generations of women and stories. Contains implied suicide of historical figures; implied historical (and possibly present) human sacrifice, voluntary and/or involuntary; historical and continuing religious persecution, inter-religious tension, and religiously-inspired violence. Also contains theology. *wry* (16,500 words)

Note: This story is a gift for my friend Cat. It is written nominally in the form of a monograph by a fictional character, but it is a highly non-standard monograph, for reasons which will hopefully become clear within the story itself.

Some additional story notes are available for the curious. Also, this is a backdated repost actually made in 2014 so as to have the whole story available in a single place. You can find the original posts using the -finding marea tag.

numerology in "Finding Marea"

"Finding Marea" is at 8,200 words. I think I can finish it in four more scenes -- one with Harai doing research, one to tie up Laila's story, one with Harai putting everything together, and a fourth because I know I'll go on a tangent somewhere. Possibly I can talk Laila into telling Marea's story as well, which could be interesting. (I seem to have created another semi-important character kind of by accident, but I'd written myself into a situation where she needed to exist for plot reasons, and she let me get some ideas into the open via a conversation about theology. So, everyone say hello to Sister Josia Agipae, of the Abbey of St. Ithigea in Kos. Yes, that would be Harai's abbey, only several centuries in the past, during Laila's day.)

"Lemonade" chapter 4 is at 1,700 words, or roughly 3/4 written. That might be done sometime this week, unless I get distracted by all my other WIPs.

This is Harai's numerology system, which is widespread in the Doran Empire and the coastal region of Nalus. Comments, anyone? Am I missing really obvious 'elements' that should be signified by a number? (Yes, I know I'm leaving out death, but there's a reason for that.)

[Fic] "Finding Marea," excerpt -- original

This is a small piece of an original story I've been writing. It's a terribly irritating story, all layers upon layers, but I kind of like it. See, we have one woman (Harai Inosike) telling the story of another woman (Laila Tolemeus) who was inspired by a third woman (Marea Shouja). And the first woman repeats three versions of the third woman's story, as told to her by women four (Ifira Burosca), five (Somae Taucannig), and six (Larachine Enu). With much religious philosophy mixed in, and a vague pretense of the whole thing being a sort of sociological paper. It's enough to give me a headache.

Anyway, this is version one of woman three's story, as told to woman one by woman four.

Say that three times fast. :-p

Finding Marea )

Am nearly decided about my future (at least until the end of the year). It's kind of scary to throw yourself into the gulf of possibility and hope you can sail to a safe harbor. But still. All will be well, and all manner of things will be well.

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction: Original Stories

---------------------------------------------
Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction: Original Stories
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized primarily by... *ponders terminology* by universe, shall we say. Within each universe, I organized stories by timelines, by associated story cycles, or by degree of relation to the main story; the summaries should hopefully make the patterns clear. When the 'universe' is a category rather than a fully realized secondary world, the stories are arranged chronologically by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations. (Especially the writing dates. *headdesk*)

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia).

Notes: I am shamefully slow about my original writing, and I almost never seem to finish anything. Nonetheless, a fair amount of the following stories are complete, if only because I try to avoid posting those likely to be permanently unfinished. *sigh*

Also, a general advisory: you may or may not have noticed while reading my fanfic -- my quirks are somewhat disguised and/or mitigated by working in other people's universes -- but I am fascinated by ethics, religion, families and other social networks, sociology, history, culture clashes, world-building, and the nature and structure of truth and stories. I also have a strong tendency to focus on female characters. A lot of my original fiction is slower and more 'thinky' than a lot of my fanfic, and my issues show through more clearly.

None of these are necessarily bad things, but I figure it's only fair to tell you what to expect from my work. :)
