Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction

---------------------------------------------
Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fiction
---------------------------------------------

FANFICTION:

General Disclaimer: These stories are based on characters and situations created and owned by other people and corporations. I make no money from this borrowing of intellectual property, and intend no copyright or trademark infringement.

Organization: This list is organized primarily by fandom; within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles and then by writing date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. Read at your own risk! 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Where To Read: What I post on my journal tends to be the equivalent of a beta draft. If I have cross-posted a story literally anywhere else (except Tumblr; fic content there is just a mirror of fic content here), read the version that isn't on my journal. Versions on AO3 are definitive. If there is no AO3 version, read the ff.net version. If there is no ff.net version, read the FictionAlley version (only applicable for HP fic). Failing that, read the journal version, because that's the only one there is.

[Fic] Three Sentence Ficathon 2021 fills, part ten

Batch the tenth. :)

All prompts drawn from the 2021 iteration of the Three Sentence Ficathon (post one and post two), hosted by the wonderful [personal profile] rthstewart. The ficathon is now closed to new prompts tonight, but you can continue filling prompts and commenting on other people's fills for as long as you like!

56. ) For [personal profile] rthstewart: Doctor Who, Martha, This is me walking away, written 3/2/21

Not To Play (180 words)

-----

Martha learned young that sometimes, the only way to win is to walk away: if your opponent controls the field on which you have to fight, makes the rules that define victory, and is determined to make you lose (and look foolish or presumptuous for struggling), you can't get anywhere running through maze with all its exits locked; instead, you have to step back, climb over the walls, and walk away to a place, a perspective, where you can show people how the game is rigged.

The Doctor learned that same lesson somewhere in his endless past, and he's very good at finding the place from which to see the strings and change the terms.

He's less good at understanding that it's possible for him to be the one running a rigged game (on Martha and on himself; at least he's an equal opportunity dispenser of social awkwardness and angst), but Martha thinks, as she walks away, that maybe she's finally found the right move to make him see.

She walks away. She loses. And that's how they both win.

57. ) For [personal profile] elementalraven: The Hunger games, prim & rue, what if rue had won the hunger games, written 3/2/21

Greater Love Hath No Woman (230 words)

-----

"Thank you for trying to save Katniss," says the pale girl, Rue's own age, with crack-skinned, dirt-nailed fingers and the air of a transplanted seedling struggling to survive.

"You were lucky to have her as your sister," Rue says, extending her manicured hands and offering the fragile, glass-shard smile she's worn since Haymitch and her own sponsor told her the Capitol was growing tired of her grief, that it was good to be a little forlorn (a childhood tragedy always goes down well) but better to seem bright and hopeful, to gloss over the truth that she was merely the latest in a long line of child slaves and sacrifices -- and, sore-hearted and sore-boned, facing the other girl Katniss died to save, blurts out despite the need to watch her tongue, "I wished she could have been mine, too."

"You can be mine instead," says the pale girl -- Prim, Katniss said her name was; whispered it in the night, too soft for cameras or microphones to catch, as if to give the Capitol her name might somehow give them more power over her than they already had -- and as she pulls Rue into a hug (the first unfaked, unconditional human touch Rue's felt since Katniss died), Rue thinks to herself, Katniss died so we could live; I will die so no one will ever have to make her choice again.

58. ) For [personal profile] galadryels: any, any, I didn't say that (your choice of where emphasis is laid), written 3/2/21

Word and Deed (165 words)

Fandom = The Magnus Archives

-----

"I didn't say I thought your love was some kind of-- of manipulation or mistake!" Martin shouted, waving his hands through the bitter exhaust fumes that clung and insinuated their way through every permeable inch of this domain. "I may have thought it, but intrusive thoughts are a thing, and anyway, it's what we choose to do and say that really matters, much more than a passing blip of neurons that was probably born as much of my own trauma -- and-- and see, you've got me admitting that I have trauma! out loud! where any passerby could overhear! -- and if that kind of trust doesn't tell you how much I know you care, regardless of what may or may not pass through my brain now and then, I don't know what possibly could."

Jon hugged him, both because Martin was right that actions mattered, and because it was easier than trying to translate his jumbled maelstrom of guilt and apology and love into coherent words.

59. ) For anonymous: Any, any, and the briars became red roses and the woodbine became white roses, written 3/3/21

Thorns and Honeysuckle (210 words)

Fandom = original

-----

The end of the story always puzzled Dina -- "The briars became red roses and the woodbine became white roses, and they cast petals and perfume upon the air as the castle woke from sleep," her grandmother would say, with a firm nod of her head and a callused finger pointed toward the castle walls, so thickly covered in leaves and flowers that they seemed more like a hill grown soft and natural from the ground than anything humans built on purpose -- because the point of the briars and woodbine was to fence people out with thorns and interwoven vines; the curse's end should have softened those defenses, but the royal roses still had plenty of thorns.

Come to that, woodbine was just a fancy name people used for honeysuckle when they didn't want to tiptoe that half-inch too close to nursing livestock and other bodily functions -- and nobody ever said honeysuckle wasn't pretty or smelled anything but sweet, so there was no need to look elsewhere for perfume either.

These days, Dina peered at the thick tangle of greenery and thorns every time she hauled firewood through the castle gates, and smiled to herself to see the quiet gold of honeysuckle still twining amidst the roses and their blood-tipped thorns.

---------------
---------------

60. ) For [personal profile] elementalraven: The Hunger games/any, any, a crossover, written 3/5/21

Hunger, Sated (225 words)

Fandom = The Hunger Games/The Magnus Archives

-----

The Games are a rich feast for all the powers: the Eye, for the knowledge that the entire world is watching, judging your every action and word; the Web for the loss of agency that snares each Tribute in their own personal tangle of inevitability; the Hunt, the Slaughter, the Desolation, the End -- so obvious as to need no elaboration.

The Vast and the Buried claim their tithe in the various obstacles wrought by the Gamemakers, the Corruption and the Flesh in the twisted mockeries of natural creatures set upon the Tributes, the Stranger in the swoop and betrayal of alliances and the Capitol's blithe denial of the Tributes' humanity, the Spiral in the boiling, itching knowledge that this entire system is mad and makes no sense and yet the Capitol can't see the injustice (to say nothing of the casual way geography is rearranged at whim).

The Lonely seeps into each Tribute's heart in turn, twines around their ankles and weighs them down with the stark knowledge that even if they survive, not even other Victors will truly be able to share in their pain... and the Dark? The Dark is both savior and most perilous of all, for just as it shelters the dying children from their tormentors' eyes, each close of the curtains brings new horrors forth to glut upon their fear.

19. ) For anonymous: Any, any, lost in translation, written 2/7/21

Lost in Translation (195 words)

Fandom = Chronicles of Narnia. Contains Telmarine backstory.

-----

"I will tell you tonight of Māui, who snared the errant sun, who fished islands from the sea, who brought the secret of fire to the people," Eka said to her children as they sat beside the fire in the strange half-underground house made of dirt and grass that the man who killed her husband (and fathered her two youngest children) had built in this strange land beyond the cave.

"What's an island?" her youngest son asked: a child of this new world, of its mountains without daily clouds, of its winter ice and snow, of its horses and sheep and shaggy cattle in place of pigs and chickens, his mouth familiar only with the speech of the raiders that had bloomed like a fever in Eka's mind as they stumbled from stone to the sunlight of a foreign sky.

"It's a mountain only instead of trees and grass around it there's miles and miles of water," said her eldest daughter, who still remembered their lost home, and as she watched the confusion on her son's face, Eka wondered how long until all her people's history and gods were lost in the gulf between generations.

---------------
---------------

20. ) For anonymous: Any, any, the only way out is through, written 2/8/21

Theseus in the Labyrinth (105 words)

Fandom = The Magnus Archives

-----

"Sometimes the only way out is through," Georgie says, and Jon makes a noncommittal noise rather than answer; he understands that she means well, and that pushing through worked for her in the aftermath of her own brush with the impossible.

In his experience, though, 'through' never reaches an exit; he only tangles deeper and deeper into the grip of his own personalized whirlpool of terror and regret. Turning around and asking somebody to haul him back is the only chance of freedom, for however short and painful a time.

He's trying not to Know if there's anybody left to hear him when he calls.

---------------
---------------

21. ) For [personal profile] ultra_fic: any, any, midnight at the lost and found, written 2/9/21

Found and Lost (110 words)

Fandom = The Magnus Archives

-----

The Magnus Institute, Sasha sometimes thinks, is like a giant lost-and-found: people bring in stories of experiences they'd stumbled into and would strongly prefer to forget, and other people come by later to pick through the inscrutably-organized heap in search of something important to them. Her job is to sort and catalog the items, and sometimes to show people around the collection; she's in the business of finding, not of losing, and she's very good at her work.

Much later, she has a bare second before the end to realize she was always one of the lost and abandoned things and to wonder if anyone will try to find her.

---------------
---------------

22. ) For [personal profile] kalira: any, any, bloody fluff, written 2/9/21

Strange New World (235 words)

Fandom = Chronicles of Narnia

-----

"We hunt well together," the Crow said to her companions as the young Wolf lapped at the marrow in a cracked thighbone and the Human methodically skinned and butchered the carcass of a dumb deer; "One to spot, one to flush, one to kill, and we all benefit."

"I maintain I'm doing the lion's share of the work," the Human said as she began to wrap the meat in the deer's own skin, blood-streaked hands deft as she tied tendons around rough hide, "but yes, we waste much less time this way, not to mention the value of companionship; I still don't discount the possibility that I've gone mad and you're both hallucinations, but even so, humans need friends to survive and I'm willing to believe you might lead me to somewhere with explanations."

"The garden in the Uttermost West holds many explanations, some of which even fit people's questions," the Wolf said, looking up from her bone, "but there's no need to hurry; the Queen of the Twisted Tower" -- here the Crow mantled her wings, unsettled, and the Human paused to scribble another note in her little paper book -- "has gone east to Narnia and taken her armies with her, so even if you never learn how you came to the Western Wild, there's nothing to stop us from building a new pack and carving a territory where we can decide our own truths."

---------------
---------------

23. ) For [personal profile] sholio: Black Panther, Nakia, a small piece of home to hold onto when she's out on assignment, written 2/9/21

Keeping Faith (145 words)

-----

A kimoyo bead would be far too obvious -- vibranium is too rare and precious to go unnoticed -- but Nakia is used to the feel of her beads around her wrist, resting against her sternum, hanging from her ears.

Glasswork, pottery, and smithing are not her gifts, but all children learn some of the traditional arts and the awkward nature of her handiwork adds verisimilitude to many of her covers.

Eyes downcast, Nakia kneels before the latest would-be warlord whose camp she's infiltrated, and rubs the uneven glaze of her lumpy bracelet beneath her fingers -- clay from the creek behind her mother's house, glaze from her cousin's pottery, cotton string from her grandmother's farm -- a piece of home to remind her of all the riches of Wakanda, and urge her onward to help the outer world take one more shaky, faltering step toward peace and freedom.

---------------
---------------

24. ) For [personal profile] runespoor: Naruto, Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura, promises, written 2/9/21

Pinky Promise (275 words)

This wound up as an installment in my Summer Camp & Politics AU.

-----

"One day I'm gonna be prime minister and then I'll make sure nothing like what happened to your family will ever happen again -- that's a promise!" Naruto says, looking back over his shoulder from the front of the canoe.

("Turn around, we're almost to the rapids," Sakura says.)

"The prime minister can't always control the army," Sasuke snaps, letting go of his paddle with one hand to flick at Naruto's face, "or get laws through the Assembly, so even if you do somehow get elected, what good do you think you can do on your own?"

("The rapids! We're coming to the rapids! If you don't turn around and start paddling again--")

"I won't be alone -- I'll have you and Sakura-chan with me," Naruto says, and raises his paddle like he's thinking of swinging it at Sasuke; "Tell him we'll fix Fire Country together, Sakura-chan!"

Sakura tips the canoe over.

Then she hauls herself back in and upright while her friends are still sputtering. From her newly commanding height, and with her own paddle jammed firmly between two rocks to keep from drifting uncontrolled into the rapids, she pronounces, "I'll fix Fire Country... but you two can come along, I guess. I'll need somebody to play figurehead while I get everything done."

Sasuke and Naruto exchange a long, speaking look, which would be very solemn and serious if they weren't sopping wet with hair plastered to their faces.

"Deal?" Naruto says, not turning to look at Sakura. She narrows her eyes suspiciously.

"Deal," Sasuke agrees, and the boys lunge forward in tandem to tip Sakura back into the river with them.

It's a good day.

[Fic] "Narutostuck: The Deepest Secret Nobody Knows" -- Homestuck/Naruto

Summary: Abyss holds many secrets. Some keep them out of fear. Some keep them out of love. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. (750 words)

Note: Written for [personal profile] mme_hardy, in response to the prompt: Underage: Narutostuck. Jade and Aradia and Feferi all had excellent reasons to despair. Fortunately, each of them hid their doubts from the other two... until they didn't. It is also a fill for the [community profile] ladiesbingo square underage.

This is part of the Narutostuck AU, which is a fusion in which I jammed the Homestuck characters into the Naruto world. This story won't make much sense unless you've read the other stories in the AU and the worldbuilding notes attached to them, but I will attempt a quick summary. Basically Feferi, Aradia, and Jade are a team in Abyss, which is Kouin's version of Root. Their situation is exactly as fucked up as you think it is. Fortunately, the Signless Sufferer is leading a rebellion against the Lady of Space and the Uchuukage.

Content Note: Implied brainwashing, cult-like indoctrination, child soldiers, etc. Basically all the darker implications of both Naruto and Homestuck mixed together. The underage relationship is not graphic, and it's up for reader interpretation how physical it is.

Narutostuck: The Deepest Secret Nobody Knows )

*dusts hands* A little out of order, but you write what's willing to be written.

[FIc] "Between the Saltwater and the Sea-Strand" -- Naruto

Summary: Yukiko and Kakashi run an undercover mission in the coastal port of Asase during monsoon season. Rain can make anyone philosophical. Part of the Apartment Manager AU, set after The Guardian in Spite of Herself and before An Unorthodox Pedagogical Approach. (3,515 words)

Note: Written for [personal profile] warriordrgnmage, in response to the prompt: Naruto: Hatake Kakashi/Ayakawa Yukiko set in the Way of the Apartment Manager Series Timeline. For the Bingo card: Monsoon. It is also a fill for the [community profile] genprompt_bingo square monsoon.

For obvious reasons, Yukiko and Kakashi are using fake names while undercover. Yukiko is Aoi, and Kakashi is Hyoujin.

Also, you may notice that this is gen! See, while I am perfectly cool with people shipping Yukiko with Kakashi, that is 100% never going to become Apartment Manager canon, for many, many reasons. If anyone wants a shippy AU, you are welcome to write it yourself, because I flat-out CANNOT. Seriously, even if I tried, you wouldn't want the results. They would be awful. Trust me on that.

[ETA: the AO3 crosspost is now up!]

Between the Saltwater and the Sea-Strand )

Well, that took significantly longer than it needed to, but I won in the end. \o/

Also, Kuwa Natsume (from Whose Allegiance Is Ruled by Expedience) is now officially part of Apartment Manager continuity. You're welcome. :D

[Fic] Three Sentence Ficathon fills, part one

I've gotten in the habit of posting my fills in sets of six, and there's no reason to fix what isn't broken. :)

1. ) For [personal profile] rthstewart: Any, any, reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated, written 2/1/20

We Make Our Own Second Chances (150 words)

Fandom = The Magnus Archives.

-----

Her replacement yanked open the door to the Archives before Gertrude could knock with the more functional of her rebuilt hands, and exclaimed, in a shocked and slightly offended tone, "I saw your corpse; I was a suspect for your murder; how on earth--!"

"One fascinating thing about having one's face and voice used by the Stranger in the heart of the Unknowing is that when reality becomes utterly malleable, a determined person can wrangle that sliver of near-existence into something more solid once things settle back into place," Gertrude said as she pushed past him and cataloged the changes to her old haunts, and then added, "Admittedly it took longer than I expected, and I'm not entirely certain I got all the pieces in the right order, but the important parts are clear enough. Now, will you help me kill Jonah Magnus or must I continue doing everything myself?"

---------------
---------------

2. ) For [personal profile] wingedflight: Queen's Thief, Eugenides, what do you mean "kings can't steal"??, written 2/1/20

How You Frame the Question (70 words)

-----

"Kings do nothing but steal; theft is the very essence of government. Taxes steal money, wars steal land and lives, laws steal freedom, to name simply the most obvious examples -- shall I go on?"

Helen sighed, and kicked her cousin's ankle, and said in the driest tone she could muster, "It was practical advice, not an invitation to philosophy; please stop being so very much yourself before I've eaten breakfast."

---------------
---------------

3. ) For [personal profile] kalira: Naruto, any ninja, chakra tricks, written 2/1/20

Unorthodox Uses (85 words)

-----

1. Why clutter your tea ceremony by fussing with a kettle when you can pour a stream of perfectly heated water from thin air into your cup?

2. It's not technically illegal to have a side-job using earth jutsu in the civilian construction industry, and it's not like you undercharge the village by that much, right, so really you're just doing your part to keep the economy turning.

3. Interior design is overrated; just buy cheap secondhand furniture and cast an exciting new genjutsu whenever you have visitors!

---------------
---------------

4. ) For [personal profile] syrena_of_the_lake: Harry Potter; Professor Kettleburn; occupational hazards, written 2/1/20

Duty of Care (75 words)

-----

The animals aren't the problem. Oh, certainly they're dangerous if you don't respect them and take sensible precautions, but Kettleburn is an old hand at that game; he knows perfectly well how to keep himself safe in any reasonably foreseeable circumstance (and several unreasonable ones too).

The problem is the students, and their improbable ability to manufacture new deadly accidents waiting to happen, and the damnable need to keep them safe from their own stupidity.

---------------
---------------

5. ) For [personal profile] shinon: Any, any, back to the drawing board, written 2/2/20

A Change of Perspective (225 words)

Fandom = The Magnus Archives. Text slightly edited from the version on the Ficathon page.

-----

There is an art book in Artefact Storage, titled Scraps from the Drawing Board and marked with Jurgen Leitner's bookplate, which is not only locked in a safe (as per standard containment protocol) but also wrapped in several layers of very thick and opaque paper, so as to prevent even the most casual glimpse of its cover: nobody is entirely certain who managed to wrap and glue the paper so neatly, or what became of them afterwards, but the rumors surrounding the book's acquisition suggest nothing good.

The story goes that it belonged to an artist obsessed with fractals, Escher, and trompe l'oeil , who became convinced that if she drew the exact right combination of impossible patterns and perspectives that she could walk straight out of the universe; every painting in the book is one of her failed attempts, bound together by her students after she vanished (successful at last? eaten horribly by the Spiral? is there even any difference between those possibilities?), and at best those who flip through all the pages become mangled, screaming impossibilities whose warped bodies cannot long survive once the book is closed and the rational laws of physics reassert themselves.

The worst are those who remain outwardly human, but who nod calmly, close the book, and then head to the nearest art store to buy supplies of their own.

---------------
---------------

6. ) For [personal profile] ernest: Narnia, girl!Edmund, smoke and blades, written 2/2/20

Pay It Forward (200 words)

For anyone wondering, yes, this is part of As the Morning and the Night continuity.

-----

The end of a siege is bitter, filthy work, no matter how hard one tries to hold to honor and treat one's enemies with respect -- and Edith tries, both to stop Mary and Stephen from watching her with the shadow of old alienation behind their eyes, and to keep the soldiers under her command from needing to look back on their actions either with horror, or, worse, with rationalizations that will twist their hearts to stone as sure as Jadis once petrified their bodies.

She leads her company through the wreckage of the crude wooden fort, a torn strip of gold and scarlet surcoat wrapped around her face to filter out smoke and sparks from the fires, until she spots a spruce dryad in the colors of the White Army lying crumpled in the ashes; while her squire stands guard, Edith kneels to run her sword through the still-breathing ruin of the dryad's chest, then lifts the new-sprouted seedling from between her wooden ribs to carry away and plant in more auspicious soil.

Edith can't conjure miraculous redemption from before the dawn of time, but mercy, at least, is within her power; and so she grants it where she can.

[Fic] "Which Constrains Them To Alter" -- Naruto

[tumblr.com profile] runespoor7 said: warning signs, NejiHina (or Hinata+Neji), something about them partnering up for political upheaval of the hopeful kind?

Note: This is set in the Summer Camp & Politics AU, directly following After Frost. (Look, if you say "politics" to me in context of Naruto, you have a 98% chance of getting something in this AU. It's reflexive at this point. *wry*) [550 words]

---------------------------------------------
Which Constrains Them To Alter
---------------------------------------------

One of the ground rules Tenten had laid down when she agreed to establish a law firm with Neji was a two-hour lunch break from one to three o'clock. The years had given them no reason to alter that policy, though the rule about no politics or business discussion did slip after a while, which was why Neji had his laptop open to watch his cousin make her ghostwritten speech against Uzumaki's bilateral free trade agreement live on K-PAN. He always hated hearing her parrot Uncle Hiashi's words, but this silent witness felt like the least he could do.

Except Hinata set down the papers and spoke in favor instead.

He could almost see the future flicker and lurch like pixelated static resolving into a new image. "Fuck."

"Seconded," Tenten agreed as she muted the broadcast. "I knew Sakura wanted to talk to her about the vote, but..."

"No warning signs?"

"Just general stress, and with Hinata, that's hardly unusual."

"Fuck," Neji said again. He ground the heels of his hands against his eyes, counted to ten, and picked up his cell phone. "Call Assemblywoman Hyuuga's office," he said, and pressed the phone to his ear.

The call went straight to voicemail, where Hinata's recorded voice informed him that the box was full, apologized for the inconvenience, offered her official email as an alternative way to reach her, and terminated the connection.

Neji sighed.

"I don't know what else you expected," Tenten said from across the conference room table, where she was interspersing bites of white rice with a horribly bland mix of skinless chicken, carrot, and wilted spinach. "If you want, I can get her personal number from Sakura -- assuming she hasn't turned that phone off too. There's no way she'll see any emails until next week at best."

Neji considered that for a minute. On the one hand, even a small gesture of support from a family member might go some way toward countering Uncle Hiashi's disapproval. But on the other, if Hinata wanted him to have her private number, she would have found a way to get it to him before now.

He shook his head. "Thanks for the offer, but I like to think I've learned a little bit about boundaries since our teenage years. I won't push her. Just let Sakura know to pass on my support if she has the chance."

"You got it," Tenten said, and set down her chopsticks in order to send a quick text. "Anyway, assuming the treaty passes--"

"After that? It will."

"--assuming it passes, how thoroughly will we need to adjust our arguments in the Makishima case? Considering the international trade terms were a big part of the contract disagreements, I think we might need to--"

Neji's phone rang.

"Hold that thought," he said, and accepted the call. "Hyuuga Neji speaking."

There was a pause on the other end before Hinata's soft voice said, barely audible over the background noise of the Assembly chamber, "Cousin Neji. I'm sorry to bother you, but I think... I think I might need to hire a lawyer. In case Father... after the vote... since I'm only here because of his... um..."

Neji took a deep breath and kept his voice level and calm. "Yes. Of course. When do you want to meet?"

[Fic] "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" chapter 17 -- Naruto

"The Guardian in Spite of Herself" is the sequel to The Way of the Apartment Manager, a canon-divergence AU that starts six years pre-manga. It also has fanart.

Fic Summary: The reward for a job well done is a bigger job. In this case, Ayakawa Yukiko's new job is a lot more complicated than anyone expected. The Uchiha massacre and its aftermath, in the world of "The Way of the Apartment Manager."

Chapter Summary: Chapter the Seventeenth, in which an unexpected development short-circuits yet another interminable Amane family argument, Sasuke and Yukiko have a very bad afternoon, and Eiji opens negotiations. (4,150 words)

Note: Hey, look who's back in business! \o/ :DDD

Also, it's been forever and a day, so a quick recap: Yukiko is en route to Tengai, undercover in a trade caravan, as part of a mission to assassinate Amane Eiji. Sasuke and Naruto are tagging along with Yukiko because of reasons. Eiji is busy trying to overthrow the hidden village system on ethical grounds but A) his plans are rapidly spinning out of control and B) hiring Akatsuki is never a good idea. And Naga, Kakashi, and the three Grass-nin are pursuing Itachi through various neighboring countries.

[ETA: the slightly revised final version is now up on AO3!]

The Guardian in Spite of Herself, chapter 17 )

It's been a while since I wrote a serious action scene, so if you have any constructive commentary on that front, I am all ears! (Also I'm sure I've screwed up stuff about wagon and harness terminology, so if you know the correct words, by all means please let me know.)

Coming up next: the trade caravan deals with a lot of unpleasant aftermath, Eiji leads an awkwardly tense tour of Tengai (heh, alliteration), and Naga receives an important letter. Or at least that's the outline. We'll see how it plays out in practice...

[Fic] Three Sentence Ficathon fills, part two

Because finger exercises are good for the soul!

As always, here is the link to the current ficathon, if you want to come play too. :)

---------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------

7. ) For [personal profile] candlesinthewell: Homestuck, Sollux & or / Aradia, hauntings, written 12/13/18 [AO3 version]

The Practical Uses of Poltergeists (150 words)

"I feel bad that I can't be around to keep an eye on you in person very often, but I bet I could get a few ghosts to act as stand-ins for the really simple stuff -- you know, poke you if you haven't eaten or slept in a while, starting with actual poking and moving up to unplugging your hiveframes and knocking you into your 'coon for an overdue nap."

"AA, what the fuck, that's a shitty idea; I'm fine," Sollux tried to snap, but it was hard to sound sufficiently outraged through the glorious, warm haze of her fingers combing through his hair and rubbing the base of his horns.

"You're just saying that because your thinkpan is used to marinating in its own unbalanced chemical stew, you dumbass," Aradia said fondly, "and besides, there's no downside because even if you lash out psionically, you can't hurt a ghost!"

---------------
---------------

8. ) For [personal profile] candlesinthewell: Any fandom, any, Bees?, written 12/13/18 [AO3 version]

Swarm (100 words exactly)

"Talking Bees?" Mr. Tumnus said, looking up from his knitting at Lucy's question. "I can't say I've ever met any -- which is not to say there aren't incredibly small Talking Beasts in Narnia; someday I must introduce you to the Jumping Spiders and the Fruit Bats who live in the caves near mine -- but individual bees don't speak. A hive is an entirely different issue and should be approached with great respect... and I think I speak for all Narnians when I say that we are grateful Aslan did not extend the same gift of awareness to nests of wasps."

---------------
---------------

9. ) For [personal profile] kalira: Girl Genius, Agatha Heterodyne/Gilgamesh Wulfenbach/Tarvek Sturmvoraus, Castle Heterodyne has opinions about heirs, written 12/13/18 [AO3 version]

Mine and Yours (200 words exactly)

Note: Also a six-sentence ficlet, because reasons.

-----

"The first is ours, of course," the Castle boomed cheerfully; "Mechanicsburg always takes precedence, and besides, while it's all very well and good to inherit an empire, I won't have my Heterodynes bound to it if they feel like burning the whole mess down someday."

"The Castle's right, you know," Agatha told her husbands, "and in any case I think most Europans have strong opinions about anyone with Heterodyne heritage on either the Baron's on the Storm King's throne. Really, the best solution would be for the two of you to have a child together and leave me out of that sea of flesh-eating bacteria -- surely somebody has come up with either a functional artificial womb or a reasonable biological alteration by now!"

Gil and Tarvek exchanged glances that hovered somewhere between appalled and scientifically challenged. "Option one?" Tarvek asked, and was already halfway out the breakfast room door when Gil nodded and grabbed his tool belt from the back of his skull-and-trilobite-bedazzled chair.

It was probably for the best for the boys' heir to be born first, Agatha reflected, and she couldn't deny the electric lure of bio-engineering... but dammit, couldn't they wait for her to join them?

---------------
---------------

10. ) For [personal profile] straightforwardly: Naruto, Haruno Sakura, trying again, written 12/14/18 [AO3 version]

Second Time Around (75 words)

The first time Sasuke left the village, she begged him to take her with him, caught up in fantasies of following him into his personal nightmare and dragging him back into the light; that got her nothing but a mild concussion, a broken heart, and an ache like a missing limb where one third of her team should have been.

This time Sakura doesn't ask.

And this time, Sasuke knows better than to stop her.

---------------
---------------

11. ) For anonymous: Any fandom, any character, the deepest cuts, written 12/14/18 [AO3 version]

Non, je ne regrette rien (100 words exactly)

"The deepest cuts are not to the body, nor even to the heart," Aeriel tells Erin as Oceanus glimmers blue and green over the crystal carapace of the Ancients' cloud-weaving machine they have come to fix, tiny drops of water splintering the watery light to impossible shards of violet, gold, and red. "They are the ones that sever futures, that turn a person's feet irrevocably down one path and not another. And yet, for all the pain of the wounds that led us here, I cannot find it in my heart to wish the gap stitched shut and time unspooled."

---------------
---------------

12. ) For [personal profile] slippy: Homestuck, Aradia/Vriska, the only gods, written 12/15/18 [AO3 version]

Theogony (100 words exactly)

They say the Lady of Luck and the Lady of Death were not always the only gods, that there were other creators, gentler and varied, but over the generations Luck turned against them one by one and Death gathered them home to her halls, until none were left to mediate the Sweet Sisters' endless war. The world became their plaything and any care they might once have held for its people withered in the face of their black and scalding hate.

When they fight, cities burn; when they kiss, nations fall; and we have no respite until this universe's end.

Mini-ficlet prompt meme: help Liz reach tax day without snapping

Okay, I am trying to sit down and restart work on my FTH fic, but I seem to have temporarily misplaced my knack for stringing words together in a coherent narrative.

So here I am, breaking my resolution about not doing mini-ficlet prompt memes. *headdesk*

This one really is for mini-ficlets, though! I may run long, of course, but I want these to be finger exercises rather than major projects.

You know the basic drill by now, yes? Pick a square from my Genprompt Bingo card, add one to three characters plus a scenario, and I will write you a ficlet of at least 3 sentences and/or 100 words.

Here is my Genprompt Bingo card. For those who prefer lists to graphics, the open squares are: Light-Hearted, Holiday Cottages, WILD CARD, Suicide, Another Year Older: Birthdays, The Age of Reason, Steadfast, and Takeout.

-----

Obligatory small print:

1. I reserve the right to veto any fandoms I don't know well enough to write, and ask you to please try again.

2. Crossover prompts are fine! On the vanishingly unlikely chance anyone wants to read a snippet from any of my original worlds and stories, that kind of prompt is also fine.

3. In the Genprompt Bingo challenge, WILD CARD means to grab any prompt from the complete Round 12 prompt list. I reserve the right to veto any such wild card substitutions and ask you to please try again.

4. Genprompt Bingo fills do not have to be gen! (The 'gen' refers to the squares, which do not automatically presuppose shipping.) Just be aware that I'm not great at romance, so if you request shipfic, it will come out fairly low-key and may end up as ambiguous gen anyway.

[Fic] Three Sentence Ficathon fills, part two

---------------------------------------------

7. ) For anonymous: Inception, Ariadne/Arthur, Two drifters, off to see the world, written 12/8/17 [AO3 version]

each day a new and different sun (175 words)

"Columbia or Madagascar?" Arthur asks as he leans over Ariadne's drafting table and obscures her Escher-inspired garden maze (nothing serious, just keeping her hand in between jobs) with his forearms, sleeves shoved carelessly upward to reveal tantalizing swathes of skin.

Ariadne taps her pencil against his knuckles as she considers -- they have been spending a lot of time in Paris this year, and while it's nice to have somewhere to come home to, she's been getting restless and ready for a change -- but she doesn't particularly care what horizon they travel toward so long as they pick up and go; and so she shrugs and says, "Which job has more interesting details, more functional teammates, and less chance of us getting shot?"

Arthur blinks, and then smiles: "I won't presume to judge what you'd find most interesting, but I think our chances of getting shot or stuck with incompetent coworkers are fairly low in both cases, because I was actually proposing a vacation; we can certainly afford it, and after all, we never did finish our honeymoon."

---------------
---------------

8. ) For [livejournal.com profile] iawenbemerry: MCU, Hawkeye +/ Black Widow, amends, written 12/9/17 [AO3 version]

the journey of a thousand miles (250 words)

There's nothing Natasha can do directly for Clint, not while the fallout of Vienna, Berlin, and Leipzig is still fresh and every eye trained to see through shadows is watching for her movements, wondering which way she'll jump now she's cut free from any organization.

Instead, she leaves ciphered border-crossing instructions in one of the electronic dead drops Laura has access to; anonymously mails a set of false passports (Laura Ingalls and her children Carter, Layla, and Peter) to a suspiciously innocuous heritage seed company's post office box; rents a modest corporate jet through three shell companies and a half dozen aliases that ultimately trace back to Stark Industries; and files a flight plan from Council Bluffs to Regina.

When Tony tracks her to a Tim Horton's in Saskatoon three days later, still fuming over her refusal to block Steve and Barnes from taking off for Siberia, Natasha pushes a coffee and doughnut across the table and says, before he can get a word out, "I don't know where any of them are; yes, that was the point; no, I won't help you find them," because while she won't regret the side she chose -- the Accords are a hideous botch and won't stand up to the first round of legal challenges, but some regulation is both practically and ethically necessary and Steve's headfirst stubbornness wasn't going to win any leverage over the people drafting the treaties and laws -- she does regret leaving Clint without a partner, and running decoy for his family's escape is how she begins to make amends.

---------------

9. ) For [livejournal.com profile] runespoor7: Naruto, Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura, someday, together, we'll shine, written 12/10/17 [AO3 version]

makes the dream work (175 words)

Sakura reaches the valley's rim just in time to shout and send both boys' final strikes awry in startlement; when the dust and shock of the explosions clear, she trips her way down the cliff to where they lie prone and bleeding, and does her best, with stolen supplies and only basic academy training, to bind the wide, abraded stretch of Sasuke's shoulder and the matching deep and half-burned wound in Naruto's side.

"I won't come back," Sasuke says as he pushes himself to his feet, swaying with pain and fatigue; "I can find training from somebody else instead of Orochimaru, I can ignore the curse seal and find a different kind of power, but I can't stay in Konoha and I have to leave before the next retrieval team catches up."

"I know," Sakura agrees, as she washes the evidence of Sasuke's determination from her hands in the river, and then, before she can continue, Naruto opens his eyes and finishes for her: "But we're a team, you asshole, and we won't let you leave alone."

---------------

10. ) For anonymous: Any, any, there is nothing better than sitting in the branches of a giant pine tree and watching the sunrise, written 12/12/17 [AO3 version]

the good of your stars and trees (250 words)

"Explain to me again why it was so vitally important to climb a tree in the dead of night instead of doing something sensible like sleeping off Ino and Kaiba's ridiculous overkill idea of a party, or even running last-minute security scenarios for your investiture," Sasuke grumbled as he picked a bit of sap off the cuff of his shirt.

Naruto tossed a pine cone at Sasuke's forehead and said, "It's nostalgic, obviously; tree-climbing was like the first time we all got along and had fun as a team, and this is my last night of freedom from bureaucracy, so if I want to go stargazing and watch the sunrise with my teammates from the best vantage point in Konoha, I'm going to go stargazing and watch the sunrise with you guys -- so there, Hokage's orders!"

"You're not Hokage for another eight hours, and if you don't both shut up and let me undo my hangover in peace, I swear I will strip you naked halfway through the investiture and neither of you will ever live it down," Sakura said flatly from where she lay prone one branch up, but she reached down to thread her fingers gently through both Naruto and Sasuke's hair instead of any gesture to back up her threat; Naruto hummed wordlessly in his throat and pushed up into the contact, and even Sasuke deigned to close his eyes and smile like the flicker of a falling star.

They watched night fade into morning together.

11. ) For [livejournal.com profile] ama_ranth_827: Any, Any, I platonically want to have sex with you. No big deal., written 12/12/17 [AO3 version]

like a thunderbolt (175 words)

As she withdrew her sparking hand from the guts of the last member of the unexpected perimeter patrol, ripping out a segment of the sucker's spine for good measure, Nebula turned and said, "Once we finish retrieving the rest of the Guardians from this pathetic excuse for a prison, I wish to platonically engage in sexual intercourse with you; I'm told that Ravagers are frequently experienced in such matters and I've had no luck finding other partners to practice on."

Kraglin's mouth dropped open; Yondu's arrow, thus bereft of guidance, continued its last trajectory and plowed straight through a stone guard tower in a moderately impressive explosion -- which of course defeated the whole damn purpose of sneaking in and silencing the patrol squad before they could raise alarms, fuck his life.

"Afterwards, you can attempt another explanation of why some people find hats aesthetically pleasing," Nebula added, and, hefting her newly acquired lightning canon onto one implausibly slender shoulder, strode toward the still-smoking gap in the ancient Kree fortress as if a full-on frontal assault had always been the plan.

12. ) For anonymous: Any, any, ochre's dust, vermillion too, cobalt crushed, the purest blue, a gram of gold leaf for the border, written 12/16/17 [AO3 version]

a language all nations understand (375 words)

Note: This is Narnia fanfic, but pretty tenuously -- it features two OCs in a region we never actually see in canon. Still fanfic, though! The universe is neat that way. :)

-----

Sechembaris squinted through her close-work glasses at the finished page: green penstemon vines spiraled up the left margin, extending delicate tendrils between paragraphs and words to bloom in pink and scarlet flowers, graced here and there by the blue orchard bees of southwestern Calormen (much missed, here in the Seven Isles, though honeybees and bumblebees had their consolations) and one rufous hummingbird in bold crimson orange, and the whole framed by an intricate latticework gold border, made deliberately imperfect by one omitted line in the upper right corner, as a courtesy to the gods: truly an effort worthy of her father's best training and sure to nourish the eyes and souls of all who gazed upon its beauty.

She set aside her gold leaf stamp, pushed the glasses up her forehead, and leaned back in her cushioned chair to stretch the kinks out of her shoulders and wrists; "Ten pages left on my end and I think my hand may twist into permanent cramps if I work any more today; renew my spirit with a reminder of how much the Archen king is paying for this anniversary gift?" she called toward her sister's end of their workroom.

"Half a normal year's profit," Nazileen called back without turning, a fine-point brush held delicately between her fingers, "more than enough to buy this shop and the upstairs rooms entire and thus save both on rent and on worry over our landlady's whims; did I not say in Ifayyapura, O my sister and my other self, that while the North is a land benighted in the eyes of both gods and poets, their gold is as good as any other and rarity makes all talents shine bright as diamonds scattered in dust?"

"I remember that distinctly, just as I remember our father's debts and your unwanted suitors, which I am sure had nothing to do with our abrupt departure from the empire," Sechembaris said wryly, "but in any case, the light is fading and I prefer not to spoil my eyes when we are so close to completion; put away your paints and help me drink to the honor of the slave king and his traitorous queen, since it's their money paying for our wine."

---------------
---------------

17. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Star Trek: AOS, Gaila/Uhura, code, written 12/6/16 [AO3 version]

systems analysis (225 words)

The code Gaila writes is designed to help complicated chunks of metal and ceramic machinery (i.e., starships) meet their design specs in the most efficient ways (i.e., not explode by accident), and the code Nyota writes is designed to help complicated chunks of biological machinery (i.e., people) talk to each other so they don't explode their own starships by accident either (and only explode other people's starships as an absolute last resort); which is to say, there's a certain amount of overlap despite most people's apparent confusion at hearing an engineer and a linguist swap technical advice along with innuendo and bilingual puns over lunch.

But this isn't what Gaila says when classmates ask her, in vaguely pitying tones, whether it's hard living with someone whose specialty is such a soft and fuzzy branch of science it might as well be in the humanities (which isn't even true, but engineers can be awfully blinkered, Gaila's learned). Instead, she just smiles and says, "Every person is like a new code problem, and I like hacking -- I'll try hacking you if you have a few hours to spare, and I bet even a brute-force attack on your firewalls will be pretty fun for both of us! -- but Nyota tells me her own variables and commands without forcing me to guess, and that's worth a lot."

---------------

18. ) For [livejournal.com profile] reeby10: Any, any, for the glory, written 12/6/16

the ethics of duty (150 words)

"For the glory of Calormen, the glory of Tash!" Rabadash cries as he wheels around to face the unexpected reinforcements now pouring over the ridge and down into the meadow at Anvard's feet. Ilgamuth opens his mouth to echo the exhortation, but finds his voice caught stillborn in his chest by conscience: however glory may be defined, by the analyses of philosophers or the aphorisms of poets, he is sure this grubby piece of selfishness and revenge meets none of the criteria.

Nonetheless, an oath is an oath unto death, and although the shame of doing naught to stop this folly will weigh on him forever, to stand aside and leave his sworn brothers' backs unguarded would only compound his errors; in order to tally the cost of this day, they must first survive; and so he draws his sword and follows his prince into battle once again.

-----

Note: This snippet may or may not end up in "A Change of Season" whenever I finally get around to writing that story; until then, it can stand alone as a minor gap-filler for HHB, but it has more layers if you read it in conjunction with the rest of my Out of Season series.

---------------

19. ) For [livejournal.com profile] runespoor7: Homestuck, Rose Lalonde or Rose/Kanaya, Rose being a huge nerd., written 12/6/16 [AO3 version]

truly an eloquent turn of phrase (225 words)

"I had a dozen sets of these when I was twelve," Rose says as she busily arranges magnetic words on the refrigerator door, "which I mostly used to write and annotate dreadfully pretentious drivel -- the annotations being a passive-aggressive response to the messages of praise and encouragement my mother used to leave beside my creations -- but I dare say I have a better muse these days; perhaps you'd do me the honor of judging whether my literary endeavors have likewise improved."

"Violets are purple, roses are gay, leaves embrace flowers, let's be a bouquet?" Kanaya reads, her tone hovering somewhere between sarcasm and utter bemusement; "I have an intense suspicion that I'm missing a potentially-mocking cultural reference, though as matespritship proposals go, I admit this is oddly charming, in much the same way that a concussed purrbeast wiggler incites tender pity; how could I possibly refuse?"

Rose presses a hand to her forehead and fakes a swoon into Kanaya's arms; "My goodness, darling, don't say such romantic things or I might be quite overcome with passion -- flowers are delicate, you know," she gets out in her most overwrought fake British accent before she can't keep a lid on her giggles any longer and tugs her girlfriend (or fiancée? Kanaya might have been joking, but Rose finds herself surprisingly taken with that idea) down to cuddle on their kitchen floor.

---------------
---------------

20. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Inception, Mal & or / any, all that we see or seem, written 12/7/16 [AO3 version]

and, in parting from you now (200 words exactly)

"Hello, Mal," a voice says as she dies, and suddenly the pain is... not gone, precisely, but held aside for a moment, long enough for a conversation and a choice: to move on to wherever souls go when their mortal bodies shatter, or to step sideways and serve as consultant and artist for a world she's seen flickering at the edges of her own, magic curled warily around newfangled science, irrationality woven for its own sake according to its own rules.

Dom still lives; she sees him screaming silently down from the hotel window, eyes wild and hand outstretched as if he could reel back time with only his fingers and his fear; he will eat his own heart with guilt and grief.

"You will play the role that is given to you," the Dream King warns, "and it may not be as his protector," but the choice is no choice at all, and he pays her the respect of assuming she knows her own mind and hushes the raven at his shoulder when it opens its beak to attempt dissuasion; and so Mal takes her new lord's colorless hand and gives the whole of herself over to dreams forever.

21. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Inception/Sandman crossover, Ariadne & Morpheus or Daniel, forgive us our trespasses, written 12/7/16 [AO3 version]

for thine is the kingdom (300 words exactly)

"Do you mind that we grab pieces of your realm and twist them around for mercenary purposes?" Ariadne asks as she and the pale stranger sit on the tattered, rose-gold edge of a cloud and watch a flock of bats with paint rollers slap a Van Gogh sunset across the scaffolded sky; "I mean, we love your world -- I've never met anyone in dreamwork who wasn't at least halfway addicted to creating a dozen new impossible things on each new job, no matter how down-to-earth they try to present themselves -- but even so, it seems rude and I'm sorry that I can't honestly promise I'd stop if you asked."

"You tell stories, which are always and ever their own justification," the pale stranger says; "I will make the same bargain with you that I have made with all those in your trade: so long as you bring no dreams physically into the waking world--" ("I don't think the PASIV works that way," Ariadne says) "--or humans physically into my realm--" ("I really don't think the PASIV works that way," Ariadne says, before adding, sotto voce, "more's the pity") "--then I have no immediate quarrel with you, and will inform you before taking hostile action should you ever infringe on the natural operation of my realm and the minds temporarily under my care; do you accept those terms?"

"I do, and thank you, your majesty," Ariadne says, and as the dream world fades around her, washed away by the warmth of morning light across her pillow, the scent of Yusuf frying eggs in the kitchen, and the sound of Arthur and Eames arguing cheerfully over their next job options, she hopes her training will let her remember more than a melancholy smile and a fading sense of absolution when she wakes.

22. ) For [livejournal.com profile] runespoor7: Naruto, Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura, I think we deserve a soft epilogue, my love. We are good people and we've suffered enough, written 12/8/16 [AO3 version]

a soft epilogue (200 words exactly)

Naruto and Sasuke grab Sakura before she completely exhausts her chakra, and whisk her away to... she's not sure where, really, just that it's warm and clean and has the most comfortable bed she's ever encountered in her life (though that may be mostly the exhaustion talking -- or the two bodies wrapped around her like living blankets).

"We should set an alarm for--" she starts to say through a jaw-cracking yawn, but can't make herself finish the thought; there are a thousand and one things still to do now that the world hasn't ended after all, and on any other day she'd ration out the minimum amount of sleep before diving right back in to work, but right now all she wants is to stay here forever with the people she loves and trusts most in the entire universe -- and who love and trust her in return.

"Never mind, go back to sleep," Sakura manages in response to Naruto's questioning noise and Sasuke's vague grope toward whatever weapon he has hidden under his pillow, and lets herself sink into the whirlpool of dreams, safe in the certainty that finally, finally, they've reached a chance to build a kinder life, together.

[Fic] "Rekindling" -- Naruto

[personal profile] branchandroot said: Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke: tradition; Naruto and Sakura accompany Sasuke in some small family or festival tradition.

Note: So this ended up much longer, more angsty, and trickier to write than I expected. Story of my life, apparently. *sigh* Anyway, this fic is an installment in my Summer Camp & Politics AU, in which the elemental countries are modern nation-states locked in an uneasy regional standoff, and Team 7 (plus others!) met as children at a summer camp and now, as adults, are trying to drag Fire Country into being a functional multi-party democracy instead of an oligarchy that flirts heavily with military dictatorship. It takes place about a year before Zero-Sum Fallacy, the UMCC/the Glasshouse is the unified military command council/its headquarters, and the rest should be clear from internal context. (2,775 words)

[ETA: The AO3 crosspost is now up!]

Rekindling )

Bingo at last! \o/

Mini-ficlet prompt meme: fluff edition!

Okay so.

I am stuck like a stuck thing on "Guardian" ch. 17 scene 3 (not because I don't know what comes next; I just... can't make the words happen). I can't manage to focus on "The Courting Dance" instead (because guilt? tone mismatch? who even knows; brains are weird), and when I try to avoid the issue and write something completely unrelated, I just kind of blank out, like those two fics are gnawing away all the processing power that would normally go to the part of my brain that comes up with new ideas and/or picks an old idea and says 'your time in the sun has come, small plotbunny!'

I think you see where I am going with this, yes? Yes. It is once again mini-ficlet prompt meme time, because when I can't jumpstart my own creativity, I beg other people to do it for me. (Because it works. Why? Who knows. See above in re: brains being weird.)

The caveat this time is that I want to write fluff!

Here is a link to my open Cotton Candy Bingo card, which still has sixteen unfilled squares. For those who prefer lists to graphics, the open prompts are: picnic, soft, sleepwalking/sleeptalking, tradition, the little things, names/naming, WILD CARD, eyes, favorite, adventure/quest, color, open, cute, cuddle, free, sunrise/sunset.

Leave a comment with one to four characters, a prompt word from the list, and a scenario, and I will write you a ficlet of at least 500 words. Scenarios must be fluffy!

(...Look, I know my definition of fluff can get pretty idiosyncratic. But work with me here, okay? If the characters end the ficlet on a happy note, we're good.)

Anyway, if you have ever wanted a sequel to one of my oneshots, or another installment in any of my series/AUs, this is your chance to make me write it for you. :)

[Obligatory small print: Crossover prompts are fine! I reserve the right to reject fandoms I am not familiar with and produce ambiguous gen when attempting to write shipfic. Also, if someone else has previously claimed your requested prompt word, I will tell you so and offer you a chance to make a new prompt.]

external motivation accountability report, Sunday 3/6; mini-ficlet prompt meme

I have a scenario and backstory and some general world-building for my Palestuck fic. I have a kinda-sorta outline. I have a couple of key emotional beats, and an intertwined action and character arc/plot thingywhatsit.

And I have no fucking clue whose POV I should be in, let alone whether I should be trying to write in second or third person.

*headdesk*

You know what, screw this. I am going to do a mini-ficlet prompt meme after all, because desperate times call for desperate measures, and maybe if I kickstart myself into finishing something it will make my other projects flow better thereafter.

So.

Leave a comment with one to three characters plus a mood, a scenario, or a prompt word, and I will write you a ficlet that is at least three sentences and/or 100 words long.

(Obligatory small print: Crossover prompts are fine. On the vanishingly unlikely chance anyone wants to read a snippet from any of my original worlds and stories, that kind of prompt is also fine. I reserve the right to reject fandoms I am not familiar with and produce ambiguous gen when attempting to write shipfic.)

"Guardian" ch. 16 final version

The slightly revised final version is now up on AO3!

Chapter Sixteen: In which Naga and Suisen demonstrate how not to dance with a partner, Yukiko and Seichi discuss assassination and dead relatives, and, to the author's relief, Kakashi's interrogation skills end up irrelevant to the plot. (4,450 words)

I realize it's been over three and a half years since ch. 15, and I apologize for that extended hiatus. As a quick reminder, "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" is a sequel to The Way of the Apartment Manager, an AU novel in which, when Naruto moves into an apartment at far too young an age, he doesn't wind up completely alone but instead forms a family of choice with Ayakawa Yukiko, the mostly-retired ninja who owns and managers the building; in the process, he inspires her to reclaim her old dreams and change her life.

"Guardian" begins about a year after the end of "Apartment Manager," when Yukiko gets saddled with another problem child in the immediate aftermath of the Uchiha Massacre. Then things get complicated -- not least by the introduction of three other POV characters, two separate missions, an attempted social revolution in a neighboring country, and Akatsuki.

Chapter 15 left off with Naga, Kakashi, and their traveling companions about to be ambushed in Volcano Country. Chapter 16 picks up directly from that cliffhanger.
