[tumblr.com profile] asukaskerian said: Untimely ripped, Damara (+ another dancestor?), sunrise/sunset. :3

Note: Oh look, it's another ficlet in the Untimely Ripped AU! Contains mention of suicide and a friendship that fractured under the weight of untreated depression. I think the best description would be emotional hurt/comfort?

Also! Have some background notes! It's implicitly stated in "Untimely Ripped" that this version of North America contains more countries than ours does. One of those fictional countries is Ganonsyoni, which contains most of what in our world is western and upstate New York, plus a chunk of northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. (I haven't mapped it exactly, but I'd estimate Pittsburgh and Cleveland as the far corners, roughly speaking.) Part of the international border runs along the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers, which has the knock-on effect of erasing Binghamton. (People do still live there, but in small and distinct towns on opposite sides of the rivers rather than a single city/metro area.) The Megidos and their friends live in an as-yet-unnamed town approximately where Conklin is in our world, a few miles upriver/southeast of not!Binghamton and right near the NY-PA border. The fictional reservoir in this fic has flooded out what would otherwise be the village of Conklin Forks. (2,100 words)

[ETA: The slightly revised final version is now up on AO3!]

Almost at Odds with Morning )

I'll probably do another editing pass before sticking this on AO3 -- maybe add some more description, maybe clarify a few emotional beats, that sort of thing -- but I have been fighting it for four days in a row and right now I just want to post and be DONE. *falls gratefully into bed*

(Title is, as always for this series, a quote from Macbeth.)

Okay so.

I am stuck like a stuck thing on "Guardian" ch. 17 scene 3 (not because I don't know what comes next; I just... can't make the words happen). I can't manage to focus on "The Courting Dance" instead (because guilt? tone mismatch? who even knows; brains are weird), and when I try to avoid the issue and write something completely unrelated, I just kind of blank out, like those two fics are gnawing away all the processing power that would normally go to the part of my brain that comes up with new ideas and/or picks an old idea and says 'your time in the sun has come, small plotbunny!'

I think you see where I am going with this, yes? Yes. It is once again mini-ficlet prompt meme time, because when I can't jumpstart my own creativity, I beg other people to do it for me. (Because it works. Why? Who knows. See above in re: brains being weird.)

The caveat this time is that I want to write fluff!

Here is a link to my open Cotton Candy Bingo card, which still has sixteen unfilled squares. For those who prefer lists to graphics, the open prompts are: picnic, soft, sleepwalking/sleeptalking, tradition, the little things, names/naming, WILD CARD, eyes, favorite, adventure/quest, color, open, cute, cuddle, free, sunrise/sunset.

Leave a comment with one to four characters, a prompt word from the list, and a scenario, and I will write you a ficlet of at least 500 words. Scenarios must be fluffy!

(...Look, I know my definition of fluff can get pretty idiosyncratic. But work with me here, okay? If the characters end the ficlet on a happy note, we're good.)

Anyway, if you have ever wanted a sequel to one of my oneshots, or another installment in any of my series/AUs, this is your chance to make me write it for you. :)

[Obligatory small print: Crossover prompts are fine! I reserve the right to reject fandoms I am not familiar with and produce ambiguous gen when attempting to write shipfic. Also, if someone else has previously claimed your requested prompt word, I will tell you so and offer you a chance to make a new prompt.]

Summary: Aradia's friends come to check up on her and make sure her brush with magic hasn't backfired. (625 words)

Note: This ficlet is a direct sequel to Untimely Ripped and Have Lighted Fools the Way.

[ETA: The ever-so-slightly revised final version is now up on AO3!]

And Beat Them Backward Home )

Maybe someday I'll get to the actual magic lessons part of this AU. But for now, we are still dealing with emotional fallout.

(I feel SO MUCH BETTER when I'm actively writing stuff, no matter how tiny and irrelevant said stuff may be.)

Summary: The day after Untimely Ripped, Aradia's absence from school doesn't go unnoticed. Sollux & Terezi. (1,025 words)

Work on "The Dragon Debacle" is still like pulling teeth, so I took a break and wrote something else for variety. And now to bed. :-)

At last I have finished editing that anonymeme fic I've been talking vaguely about for a while now. It is now up on AO3! (Please read that version rather than the kinkmeme version, since I have made some significant edits and also some small extensions.)

Untimely Ripped: Most spellbooks are bullshit. Everyone knows this. But they're made of words and you need words to fill the hole in the center of your mind, so you flick through this one at the same mechanical pace you read a cheesy romance yesterday and plan to read a stupidly anachronistic spy thriller tomorrow. The clock on the living room wall ticks rhythmically above your head. Outside, light November rain mists down on the fallen leaves and dormant grass. Damara's cat watches you disdainfully from the mantel. You turn another page.

And then a spell title jumps out at you: For the Restoration of Life After Untimely Death. (10,775 words) [kinkmeme version, for historical reference]

Notes: This story was written in response to the following kinkmeme prompt from [personal profile] duendedefined/[tumblr.com profile] damaramegido: Aradia is told that there's a way to bring her sister Damara, who had killed herself a few months prior, back to life. This could happen either in a sci-fi setting (medical experiments?) or an urban fantasy setting (magic?), I don't really mind. Aradia immediately accepts, and the procedure/spell/whatever goes off without a hitch.

And Damara is not happy to be back.

Basically Megido family sadstuck with Aradia trying to give her sister a second chance.

I took the urban fantasy option, though the setting is suburban/rural rather an actual city. It's set in a slightly alternate version of western New York -- primarily because I am at heart a lazy writer, but also because Ithaca in November is very atmospherically conducive to stories about depression so I figured I'd write that general landscape into the story.

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Homestuck
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized by associated narrative cycles; within each section, stories are arranged first by timeline (if applicable) and then by date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: I completely and utterly blame [personal profile] askerian for my descent into this fandom. I hadn't even heard of Homestuck before she started writing fic for it, but I love her writing and generally trust her taste. So in late January of 2012, I did a little poking around via Google, found the comic, and... yeah. If you're here, you know how it hooks you. Then I made the mistake of reading through the backlog of [community profile] homesmut kinkmeme posts and fills. Before I knew it I had a file of prompts that looked intriguing. Then I was writing one. And it was porn, which if you know me is so bizarrely out-of-character there are no words. There was really no turning back after that.

I am still trying to figure out exactly how this fandom mugged me so thoroughly, but what the hell, it's been a fun ride so far and I'm sure it will continue to be so. :)

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.
