[Meme] blind questions about 10 random characters

Here is another iteration of the 'name ten characters and answer silly questions about them' meme, this one gacked from [livejournal.com profile] selenak.

Name 10 characters without looking at the questions, then answer for them. (Note: two questions require some basic familiarity with Doctor Who and House, respectively, but nothing particularly detailed.)

-----

Characters:

1. Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
2. Nyota Uhura (Star Trek: AOS)
3. Sokka (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
4. Caine aka Hari Michaelson (The Acts of Caine series, by Matthew Stover)
5. Belial (Angel Sanctuary)
6. Izanami (Lucifer)
7. Lucifer (Angel Sanctuary)
8. Lady Taranis (Seaward, by Susan Cooper)
9. Joisan (The Crystal Gryphon trilogy, by Andre Norton)
10. Umino Iruka (Naruto)

-----

---------------

The lesson here, of course, is that it is much easier to create an interesting scenario than it is to attach a functional plot to said scenario, let alone sit down and write an actual story about it.

wherein Liz talks about writing processes and stuff

---------------------------------------------
Writing for Femgenficathon 2008
---------------------------------------------

I am always fascinated by other people's writing processes, since everybody seems to have different habits (and then any given story may demand a totally different process from one's normal pattern). I also find ficathons interesting, since they're more directed than random plot bunnies.

So. This is how I dreamed up and then wrote The Affairs of Dragons for Femgenficathon 2008, with a lengthy digression into Doctor Who and a brief digression into The Dark Knight.

Expandtl;dr rambling on writing processes )

---------------

And that is one way I write stories.

...

In real life news, I refused and returned the unwanted books, turned the bad checks over to my bank (which will try ordering them again), bought two more shirts, bought some wire for making Christmas ornaments, and bought two more Doctor Who DVDs, thus exhausting the stock of my local Borders. *sigh* I really need to spend less money, but I suppose I could say that I'm doing my part to support the economy?

(I'm not really in debt -- I pay off my credit card bill in full every month -- so I suppose it's not as bad as it sounds to me. But my family will definitely be getting stories and homemade ornaments for the holidays this year, rather than presents that cost actual money.)

notes on watching old school Doctor Who

Note to self: it is NOT, in fact, a good idea to say, "Hey, I could take half an hour and start watching Genesis of the Daleks before going to bed."

Have watched episodes 1 and 2 so far. Jesus, this is creepifying.

[Fic] "Lemonade" chapter 15 -- BtVS/Gundam Wing/Naruto

Here is chapter 15 of "Lemonade." I am not switching this story up on my priority list. Sasuke's POV scene just happened to smack me in the face last night, so I finished this chapter. I am not at all sure that the scene is any good, but it wanted to be written, so here it is. *shrug*

ExpandLemonade, Part XV )

And now I am off to the library to return a book that I have decided not to finish reading. Then I should get some chores done, since it's my day off, but I suspect I'll probably watch the remaining half of The Sea Devils instead. (I should never have given in and started watching Doctor Who. It is still attempting to eat my brain... and even if I thwart that evil plan, it is slowly and surely succeeding in eating my budget. Woe!)

hi, not dead yet!

Okay. I've now watched the first 3 seasons (or series, I suppose -- another case of transatlantic vocabulary miscues) of the new Doctor Who.

I may or may not do some sort of vaguely organized reaction post at some point in the next few days or weeks, but for now, I would just like to say that I love the show, stupid cheesy bits and all, and I really, really hope they release season box sets of the old show, and that of all the script writers they have working, I really think Steven Moffat is the best (not that any of them are bad, exactly, but I think he hits the perfect notes most consistently).

*firm nod*

Right. Now, off to dive headfirst into fanfiction!

wherein Liz remembers why she doesn't watch tv and movies

They hit me too hard, you see. It's very hard to keep any sort of emotional or critical distance -- maybe through lack of practice, or maybe because a visual experience is just more intense in some ways.

In any case, my brain and life have been hijacked by Doctor Who.

See, I'd been seeing people talk about it for three years now, and I'd sort of picked up some basic notions of the world and story and characters, and I had some birthday money and two Borders discount coupons, and I was bored... and somehow this resulted, on Saturday evening, in me buying the DVD sets of seasons 1 and 2 of the new series.

I am happily drowning. :-)

I also think I'm going to buy season 3 ASAP, and if anyone can give me pointers for where to start with the old series (all 26 years of it, my god!), I would be eternally grateful.

...

This does mean that I haven't been writing a blessed thing for the last three days, and I probably won't be much use at writing for another week or so -- brain overload -- but I'm having so much fun I can't bring myself to care. :-)

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Miscellaneous Fandoms

---------------------------------------------
Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Miscellaneous Fandoms
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized alphabetically by fandom. Within each fandom, it's arranged first by associated story cycles (if applicable) and then by date. Word counts and writing dates are approximations.

Content/Warning Policy: 1) I am not consistent about warnings! I use them when I remember, for a few relatively broad categories of potentially problematic content, but if something is off-page, non-explicit, or generally backgrounded, I probably won't think to note it in the metadata. 2) The things I try to warn for are explicit sex, rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, incest, depression/suicide, familial dysfunction, and occasionally also societal dysfunction (aka dystopia). Sometimes I just slap a general content warning on all my fic for a given fandom and don't label each individual fic. I also don't generally warn for violence, unless the violence in a fic is dramatically out-of-step with the violence in its source canon. 3) I don't use any content rating system unless I'm posting to a site or community that requires or encourages ratings, because I find movie-style ratings counter-intuitive when applied to written fiction, and not particularly useful for anything other than denoting the presence of explicit sex, which I already note in the metadata.

Quality Rating System: I've marked my favorite stories with asterisks, on a scale of 1 to 4. The more asterisks, the more I like the story. This doesn't necessarily mean that stories without asterisks are bad, just that I don't like them as much. Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: Outside of my main fandoms, my fanfiction writing tends toward resolving plotholes and other canon problems, the creation of backstory (which is itself a form of problem-solving, where the problem is a gap in canon information about a character or an event), or prompt responses (often for Yuletide). Therefore, almost all the stories on this page are an expression of dissatisfaction with canon, of curiosity about what lies behind the canon we see, or of an attempt to satisfy somebody else's heart's desire. Once I've resolved a problem, filled a gap to my own satisfaction, or answered a prompt, I generally have nothing further to write in that fandom, which is why these subsections have so few stories.

Anyway, there's a lot of random stuff on this page, and some of it I look back on and wonder what on earth I was thinking, but overall I do like most of these stories -- probably because when something bugs me so much that I write a story to fix or explain it, or when I am writing to make someone else happy, I care enough to give my best effort.

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.

Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Crossovers

---------------------------------------------
Master List of Elizabeth Culmer's Fanfiction: Crossovers
---------------------------------------------

Organization: This list is organized in vaguely chronological order, counting from the start of each series or multi-chapter story. Memes and miscellaneous one-shots are at the bottom of the page.

Also, I am not claiming to be an arbiter of taste; you may love stories I dislike, and vice versa. I am just providing a heads-up about the ones that I think are best written and/or most interesting.

Notes: My approach to crossovers is to take a stupid and/or ridiculous idea -- because crossing two separate secondary worlds is almost always a silly thing to do -- and treat it as realistically as possible, paying particular attention to characterization. I figure that I'm asking readers to suspend so much disbelief over jamming two series together that I'd better not push on any other aspect. Also, I feel the point of a crossover is to have characters from different canons meet -- or at least to have characters from one canon react to a different canon world -- so if you aren't writing them in-character, why are you even bothering? *grin*

Where To Read: As always, if an AO3 version exists, it is definitive. FF.net versions are definitive in the absence of an AO3 version. Journal versions are the equivalent of beta drafts, though the shorter and/or fragmentary works may never be posted anywhere else.
