fanart list, for reference purposes
Feb. 19th, 2016 11:44 pmThe pit of voles is being its usual link-eating self, so I am posting these here for reference and so I can make a single link pointing at this post instead of trying to make this whole damn list appear on my ff.net profile. :/
(Note: I am not sure all of these links are still live. I'll check them some other day.)

Yeah, I fail beyond belief at timely updates. In other news, water is wet. (2,175 words)
( Lemonade, Part XIX )
As always, if you have any criticism or suggestions, I am all ears! I wrote the first half of this about a year ago, then decided the details of the translation spell were holding up the story and tried to start over, only to decide today that that was a stupid choice and go back to finish the chapter I'd originally started instead of the alternate version I tried to force myself to write. So this is a weird combination of written so long ago I'm out of touch with it and written so recently I have no perspective on it.
Also the blue teakettle mantis demons are a little tricky to write. I have a file of world-building about them which I can post if anyone is interested, but mostly I'd like to know if I'm getting enough description in for you to have a reasonable picture of what they look and sound like, or if I need to backtrack and spend a few more paragraphs talking about them.
(Tangentially, does anybody know if Sasuke's name actually means anything in Japanese? This is vaguely relevant to how the translation spell works, and the coincidence of Faith and Duo both having names that are actual English words.)

One week less than a year is a pretty embarrassing gap between chapters. Sorry about that. (2,025 words)
( Lemonade, Part XVIII )
As always, if you have any criticism or suggestions, I am all ears! (Except about the translation spell. I was going to hold that until several chapters on, but I am sick of writing around the communication gaps. I always meant to use a translation spell sooner or later. It's just that later became sooner and sooner became now. *wry*)

For the first time in this story, I am not keeping an absolutely strict linear time flow. In other words, Faith's POV section picks up a few minutes before the end of Sasuke's POV section from chapter 16. Everything after that is linear again.
Thank you to everyone who gave me advice on Chinese and Japanese writing systems, and to
deralte, who pointed out the obvious English workaround to the Japanese phrase I was asking about. (2,100 words)
( Lemonade, Part XVII )
This may seem like a completely random plot tangent, but I promise there is a method to my madness, though it may not currently be apparent. (I will give you a hint: it involves bathtubs. And possibly chocolate. *grin*)
...I will try to describe the blue insect demons and their mounts in more detail when I revise this for ff.net, but right at the moment, I would rather get something posted than wait until I have the mental energy to make it perfect.

[Meme] first lines of imaginary sequels
Feb. 27th, 2010 03:41 pmFound via
askerian:
Pick one of my stories and I will tell you the first line (ETA: okay, the first few paragraphs, on the theory that context is more interesting than concision) of its sequel. Even if I was never actually planning to write a sequel. Even if it already has a sequel -- I'll give you the first line of another version of its sequel!
Do not ask me about "Strange Likenesses," because I don't yet know how that will end (basically, there is the wildly unlikely happy ending, several variants of the rather likely inconclusive ending, and the semi-likely 'rocks fall, everyone dies' ending). Everything else is fair game.
-----
Sequel snippets written so far:
for The Way of the Apartment Manager (So how did Naruto wind up friends with Sakura by the start of "Guardian"? I will probably continue this at some point.)
for Lemonade (Thus proving that I do so know where the story's going.)
for Endurance (This one turned into an actual fic, 900 words long. *headdesk* I am not sure how 'canon' this sequel is, though, as I'd left "Endurance" inconclusive for a reason.)
for New Horizons (ie, the story in which Ginny, Harry, and Draco have a post-DH-epilogue threesome in Greece. Naturally there are repercussions. *grin*)
for The Two Secretive Princesses (925 words on Toph and Mai during Ozai's invasion of Toure-on-Marsh. Rather dark.)
---[[or the more canonical version, which includes fewer deaths and more mentions of Aunt Ermintrude]]

Here, after a year and four months, is chapter 16 of "Lemonade." For those of you who have forgotten that I was even writing this, it is a story that really ought to be crack but which I am treating completely seriously because I like a challenge. *grin*
Basically, a demon cult screws up an interdimensional summoning spell and sends Faith Lehane (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Duo Maxwell (of Gundam Wing), and Uchiha Sasuke (of Naruto) to a hell dimension. The three impromptu companions are forced to work together to survive and return home. Eventually this will result in a threesome. In the meantime, there is a lot of character development and occasional intrusions of plot.
Chapter 15 ended with the trio in their little cabin sheltering from a sandstorm as nightfall approached. Chapter 16 picks up immediately after Sasuke falls asleep. (1,975 words)
( Lemonade, Part XVI )
So yeah, cliffhanger. Sorry about that.

Chapter 16 of "Lemonade" is done in rough draft. Now I am going to sit on it for a day or two to get some perspective and sand off the worst kludgy bits. (This may very likely include ditching the random discussion of English grammar and putting in actual interesting conversation instead. *headdesk*) It will be up Tuesday night at the latest.
I warn you in advance: it ends on a cliffhanger and god only knows when I will get around to chapter 17. But still, new chapter. Yay?
Note: I did indeed cut the "English is a stupid language" conversation, but it's available as an outtake if you are interested.

In other news, I taught RE today. This week's lesson was David and Goliath, which is always a fun story. Afterwards we discussed the usage of 'David and Goliath' as a metaphor for people taking on huge and seemingly insoluble problems, like, oh, the recent earthquake in Haiti, so I hope the kids will talk to their parents about that and maybe be inspired to contribute some of their allowance to charity or something.
Then we made outlines of David and Goliath on a ten-foot roll of paper. David was a tracing of one kid, and Goliath was a tracing of two kids, with one 'standing' on the other's shoulders. The kids absolutely went to town coloring the pictures in. David ended up with a mermaid tail, a rocket-launcher, wings, glasses, and a glow-in-the-dark mohawk. Goliath was wearing a chain of pineapples (...don't ask me; I am just reporting what Emma told me she drew), several belts that gave him various superpowers, a bazooka, and a pig snout.
I almost literally fell over laughing. :-)

Here is chapter 15 of "Lemonade." I am not switching this story up on my priority list. Sasuke's POV scene just happened to smack me in the face last night, so I finished this chapter. I am not at all sure that the scene is any good, but it wanted to be written, so here it is. *shrug*
( Lemonade, Part XV )
And now I am off to the library to return a book that I have decided not to finish reading. Then I should get some chores done, since it's my day off, but I suspect I'll probably watch the remaining half of The Sea Devils instead. (I should never have given in and started watching Doctor Who. It is still attempting to eat my brain... and even if I thwart that evil plan, it is slowly and surely succeeding in eating my budget. Woe!)
