Assorted things:

1. The Best Buy tech said he could only replicate my bluescreen problem once, when he first turned on my computer. After he did some tune-up/clean-out on my system it did not reoccur. This is frustrating because I replicated the problem FIVE TIMES IN A ROW on Wednesday afternoon when I got home from work. I actually left my computer awake all night and then all day today so I don't know if it would have reoccurred again after I finally got enough time to restart it properly instead of just mashing the power button while the blank screen gleamed mockingly at me.

Background: my laptop has a known -- and so far as I know, unfixable -- Windows 10 glitch where if you tell it to sleep, it then refuses to wake up until you turn the power off and back on, at which point it will act like it woke up from ordinary sleep. And the thing is, that screwy version of "waking up" is exactly when the bluescreen glitch occurs. I forgot to mention that to Best Buy when I dropped my laptop off on Saturday because I'm so used to it that I forget it's a glitch, and I suspect that may be why they failed to replicate and thus hunt down the cause of the bluescreen incidents. *sigh*

2. Work has been EXHAUSTING. Cornell surprise!announced their fall 2020 schedule on Tuesday afternoon, and we have been fielding so many phone calls. All the phone calls. ALL OF THEM. And also all the emails. *headdesk*

We are also still working our butts off to create new shiny photos and videos of staged apartments. Miss California is editing and posting the video tours. I have started working through the photos -- first organizing them into folders by apartment, and then tweaking every single one to be brighter, sharper, and more colorful (and also sometimes cropping and straightening wonky angles). I have, to be honest, done very little photo work because I have been running a Red Queen's race trying to keep on top of all the other office stuff.

I have a three-day weekend starting tomorrow because of Independence Day. I am going to sleep SO MUCH.

3. My WIP Big Bang story has been claimed by an artist. \o/ I need to get in touch with them, but I have been so brain-fried these past two weeks, I have been letting a LOT of things temporarily slide.

4. For example, I still need to apply to Not the IRS for the 2020 tax season. I must remember to do that tomorrow. It's not like it takes very long -- they have all my information on file from previous years, so all I really need to do is verify which office I work at and add an extra year of employment to my tax job and my rental company job histories.

5. I got another prompt for my latest mini-ficlet prompt meme. Yesterday I kind of blinked at it and tilted my head because it is... well, it's a request for Yukiko/Kakashi ship!fic in my Apartment Manager AU. This is something various people have expressed interest in over the years, but it's also something I thought I'd been pretty clear was never going to happen, for various and sundry reasons. But! Today I figured out a way to elide the issue: namely, a fake relationship between undercover personas while on a joint mission. It's going to be mostly a mission fic, but it will be very heavy on friendship and trust, so I think that will fulfill the relationship aspect of the prompt.

(Look, you don't actually WANT me to write Yukiko/Kakashi rather than Yukiko & Kakashi. Even if I tried, it would come out very badly, because I straight-up cannot convince myself of that particular relationship in any romantic or sexual form. At best you'd get a crash-and-burn disaster that leaves them both hurt and avoiding each other for years. You are much better off writing your own fic-of-a-fic if that ship is what your heart desires. I will just continue writing them as unexpected good friends who sometimes use each other for safe flirting because they both know it's never going anywhere.)

6. I really enjoy having no idea where the Magnus Archives is going each week!

7. I have also started listening to Rusty Quill Gaming. Today I finished episode 17: Good Cop, Bad Cop, Stabby Cop and Bertie (which, tangentially, I am slightly annoyed does not have an Oxford comma) and will probably skip the two Storyjam! episodes in favor of diving into episode 18 tomorrow, as the first 17 episodes wound up being more or less a prologue and now the REAL quest is about to begin. :)

8. Yesterday while pruning a hedge, I was so focused on reaching down to uproot a pernicious scrub maple that I bashed my forehead directly into the sharp, pointy end of a dead branch and left myself with some bloody scratches and a surprisingly painful bruise.

...

Yeah, this weekend I am going to get ALL THE SLEEP.

For [personal profile] wistfulmemory, for the Fic DVD Commentary Meme (which is still open, fyi!)

The Way of the Apartment Manager: Ayakawa Yukiko retired from being a ninja, and she's come to terms with that. Then the Third Hokage summons her for an assignment that will change her life. AU story, set six years pre-manga. (72,000 words)

Chapter 11: Chapter the Eleventh, in which Yukiko plots a grand renovation project, we meet Naga's mother, Asuma makes an uncredited cameo, and the third test starts with an uneven matchup. (4,100 words)

This chapter begins the third test of the chuunin exam, and contains Yukiko's tournament match with Uchiha Akaro. A genjutsu specialist fighting an Uchiha is a terrible mismatch, which of course is why I had to go there. I probably would have gone there even if I hadn't previously used a painful chuunin exam loss against a random Uchiha as part of Yukiko's backstory reasons for retirement -- it's one of many things that convinced her she couldn't actually do anything useful as a ninja -- but since I already had that set up, obviously I needed to replay a version of that fight and let her realize she's grown strong enough (confident enough? smart enough? whatever!) to win.

(If you think it's a spoiler that Yukiko wins, you have not been paying enough attention to shonen narrative tropes. *wry*)

The Way of the Apartment Manager - Chapter 11, with commentary )

And that is pretty much that. :)

The pit of voles is being its usual link-eating self, so I am posting these here for reference and so I can make a single link pointing at this post instead of trying to make this whole damn list appear on my ff.net profile. :/

(Note: I am not sure all of these links are still live. I'll check them some other day.)

I am having serious trouble working up motivation to write, which is frustrating. Like, I will open a document, check where I was in the story, type maybe five words, and... nothing. Blank. It's particularly annoying if I've been mentally juggling and arranging ideas earlier in the day so I know roughly where I want to go and just can't quite get there once I am actually trying to type letters on a keyboard.

One thing that I've found helpful in the past when I've had trouble writing is to switch gears and write something completely different, and also -- this is the key part -- something with an external rather than internal pressure/reward system. Like prompt!fic.

So.

Give me one to three characters plus a mood, a scenario, or a prompt word, and I will write you a ficlet that is at least three sentences or 100 words long.

Help me out, please?

Sorry, this is not a new chapter. It's just internet housekeeping time again.

...

Okay, and it's an announcement that I have moved "Guardian" to the top of my to-do list and am actively working on it once more. I am not sure if anyone still cares at this late date, but hey, I want to finish the story for myself as much as for any hypothetical readers. I mean, I still don't know the ending! Not in any great detail, at least. And I really want to know what happens.

So cross your fingers for me, and we'll go find out together. :D

---------------

The Guardian in Spite of Herself: WIP, 72,000 words so far, started Dec. 2005. The reward for a job well done is a bigger job. In this case, Ayakawa Yukiko's new job is a lot more complicated than anyone expected. The Uchiha massacre and its aftermath, in the world of The Way of the Apartment Manager. Post-traumatic stress, extreme familial dysfunction, attempted social/political/military revolution, dubious ethical choices and discussion thereof.

"Guardian" is a darker story than "Apartment Manager," partly because of the subject matter, and partly because I decided to unpick the implications of the socio-cultural and economic system of the ninja villages rather than accept them as the status quo. Also, I structured it the way I would structure an original novel, which may have been a mistake from a fanfiction perspective. In other words, three of my four POV characters are OCs, only two of whom were introduced in the previous story, and the new OC is also meant to be a semi-sympathetic antagonist whose worldview challenges the moral principles of career ninjas.

In contrast to "Apartment Manager," this story has taken (and is still taking, so help me) forever and a day to write. I think that's partly because I wrote most of "Apartment Manager" in the throes of madly passionate new-fandom love, which is not sustainable, and partly because stories with multiple POVs and plot arcs are inherently more complicated than stories that have only one of each.

But I will win eventually. *resolve face*

[Note, 1/3/16: Read the story on AO3 or ff.net. The journal version is a beta draft with all the attendant glitches, though it may be of some minor interest as a historical artifact.]

The Guardian in Spite of Herself - Table of Contents )

I suspect "Guardian" will be 30-35 chapters when complete. My current outline lists 28, but my outlines almost inevitably expand in the writing.

Apropos of nothing in particular, all twelve of the sidefics for my "Apartment Manager" Naruto AU are now up on AO3 at this handy-dandy link. :-)

(This is kind of a promise to myself that I WILL get back to work on "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" as soon as I clear a couple more things out of the way. *crosses fingers, hopes for the best*)

And now to bed.

I am bored and attempting to stay awake. I am also, alas, out of inspiration for all my WIPs. So am I asking for prompts!

Give me a character or ship PLUS a scenario | setting | mood | line of dialogue, and I will try to write you a three sentence ficlet.

ETA: Prompts are closed! Thank you to everyone who contributed. :-)

It's internet housekeeping time again. Sorry for cluttering your reading page! (You may see a few more posts of this nature pop up over the next week or two. I'm trying to rationalize my fic directory posts -- specifically, I'd like them to point to Dreamwidth table-of-contents posts rather than to LJ memory subcategories. For one thing, I can put more information in an actual post! For another... well, LJ. *sigh*)

---------------

The Way of the Apartment Manager: 72,000 words, Dec. 2004 - Oct. 2005. Ayakawa Yukiko retired from being a ninja, and she's come to terms with that. Then the Third Hokage summons her for an assignment that will change her life. AU story, set six years pre-manga. Social ostracism and discussion thereof.

"Apartment Manager" is the first story in an AU continuity. It is followed by a WIP novel -- "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" -- and several sidestories. The basic idea is that when Naruto moves into his own apartment, the Third Hokage asks Ayakawa Yukiko, the building's owner and manager, to look after him rather than leaving him completely on his own. Yukiko is a mostly retired ninja, but Naruto catalyzes her to change her life. Then those changes begin to snowball out to the rest of the village.

The other AU shift is Kakashi's age. When I started writing these stories, I'd never seen Kishimoto's official timelines, so I guessed people's ages based on their appearance and characterization in the manga. I was pretty close with Iruka... but four or five years off with Kakashi. Unfortunately, by the time anyone pointed that out to me, his age had become integral to several character interactions -- for example, Yukiko treats him as a contemporary rather than an annoying teenager -- so I decided not to go back and make wholesale changes.

For a pre-canon story starring an original female character with another original female character in one of the prime supporting roles, "Apartment Manager" wound up ridiculously popular. I think it was one of those 'right story, right time' things that I could never duplicate if I tried. Also, it is absurdly fluffy for a Naruto story, violence and occasional angst notwithstanding.

I advise reading this story on AO3 or ff.net rather than on my journal, since the journal posts were essentially public beta drafts and were noticeably revised before being posted elsewhere. (The comments might be of some historical interest, I suppose.)

The Way of the Apartment Manager - Table of Contents )

*dusts hands* There, all tidy!

Hmm. I think I should do "Tides" next... which is also a good reason to format that fic and crosspost it to AO3, now that I think of it. Yes. I will work on that tomorrow.
