Could not take the Spenser essay any more (there is only so much one can say at a time about knighthood and deception and self-contradiction and pride and humility and the definition of nobility and obligation), so I took a break to clear my head. I ended up doing more background work on "The Summoner's Tale," mostly because Catherine fascinates me. I love her to pieces, but she's so messed up.

Anyway. Here's another snippet, which helps clarify some of her motives for trying to kick-start the end of the world as we know it... as much as one can ever clarify such a thing.

Reckoning
---------------------------------------------

Her father died when she was eight. Her mother died when she was twelve. Her sister died when she was twenty-four. Fours are unkind. The world is unkind. The world is unclean.

A railroad took her father. Winter and pride took her mother. A steamboat took her sister, after the city had stolen her away from home. The world is unsafe. The world is unwell.

She gathered her books and her faith. She gathered her niece and her distant cousin. She found the Summoner and raised him in innocence. The Queen of Heaven will answer his call. Her family will witness. The world will be cleansed. The world will be saved.

The world owes her.

The world will pay.

She has only its best interests in mind. Surely she walks in the path of righteousness, and when all is done, she will dwell in the house of the Lord, and the world will give back what it took from her.

Heaven will not be mocked.

Heaven will come to earth.

This is the year, when she is thirty-six, when her niece and cousin are twelve. Foursquare the corners of the world, foursquare the corners of the ritual: the Witnesses, the Summoner, and the Supplicant.

Heaven will put all things right.

Even death can die.

In other news, the downstairs entryway light and the second-floor landing light are both dead. I love my house (it's an 8-bedroom, rented out by room), but it's really a run-down piece of crap sometimes. And I think one of the toilets flooded yesterday. At any rate, the bathmat was suspiciously soaked and stinky, and left in a crumpled pile by the toilet. *sigh*
