Well, that was an unexpected downer of an ending.

...

I am really not sure what to say. I mean, the episode started out feeling like filler, but then there was serious discussion and character moments and stuff, and the whole Sokka-in-the-crevice sequence was hilarious, and oh, Zuko, break my heart, why don't you???

So yeah. Emotional whiplash up the wazoo. I am going to have to sleep on this one.

That episode was intense. Some serious moments of logic fail and logistics/engineering fail, but overall, I am more than willing to forgive those flaws since I got such a lot of great character interaction, kickass fight scenes, and humor. (I am telling you, the bit with the house with no second story floor? I almost fell out of my chair. Literally.)

*pause* Wait, there is a commentary track on this one! *watches with commentary*

So yeah, that explains a few things. It would have been better to get the explanation within the episode, but I will take what I can get. *grin*

Anyway, this was a good episode, and I adored the flashbacks, but oh man, I am just wrung out like a limp rag from sympathetic embarrassment. Eesh. Also, I confess I do not understand the fandom picture of Ursa as the perfect mommy. She's nice, yes, and she means well, but she plays favorites just as much as Ozai (only she prefers Zuko while he prefers Azula), and I am not at all sure her focused attention would have been good for Zuko in the long run, any more than Ozai's focused attention has been good for Azula.

And now to bed.

Overall, a very good episode, and a great introduction of a new main character. She has an immediately obvious role to play, she's cool, she has an interesting personality, and she's not perfect. What's even better is that her weaknesses and strengths are logical extensions of each other.

Yeah, I see why people love Toph. She is pure concentrated awesome. :-)

(This episode also has an optional audio commentary on the DVD, which I listened to after watching it. So that's where the backstory about Toph and the badger-moles comes from! Also, it's interesting that they had originally intended Toph to be male. I think that would have been unfortunate. Yeah, there are the Dangerous Ladies -- Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee -- and there's Katara, of course, but that would have left the Gaang very unbalanced. As it is, up 'til now Katara has sometimes been playing 'generic token and/or kickass girl' rather than specifically Katara, which may be why I tend to prefer Sokka to her, despite her frequent moments of awesome and his frequent moments of lameness.)

Next up, "Zuko Alone." *anticipates*

Other stuff I did today: washed laundry, deposited this week's and last week's paychecks, and returned a library book. Also, I slept a lot. Why does it always take so long to get better after illness?
