A snippet about Ekanu watching Denifar do woodcarving, set after Learning to Listen and Barycenter, but before Ekanu leaves for Vinaeo in Seduction. (325 words)

Denifar had left his door cracked open, which meant he was not averse to guests. Ekanu knocked on the frame anyway, as a courtesy, but was answered neither by his voice nor by a clattering scramble as he rushed to greet her. All she heard was the distant echo of other people moving and talking in the stairwell at the end of the corridor.

Curious, she pulled the door further open and looked into the small stone room, wondering if he had simply failed to latch the door when he went somewhere else for the evening.

But no, Denifar was sitting cross-legged on his bed, his head bent and his hair falling down into his eyes as he concentrated on something in his hands. Something flashed in the slanting summer sun, and a long strip of golden-tan curled off to float to the blanket by his legs, and Ekanu realized he was carving wood.

She thought for a moment of speaking his name, to catch his attention, and then asking what he was making, but then she leaned back against the doorframe and simply watched him. His knife moved in a steady rhythm, peeling the bark and rough knots off the thick chunk of wood. It smelled like pine, fresh and unseasoned. Ekanu wondered what he was making. A model for a machine? A toy, like he sometimes made and gave away to children he passed in the streets? A sculpture, either for its own sake or to burn as an offering at one of the Trinitarians' confusing festivals?

Ekanu liked watching him work. Denifar had good hands, strong and sure, and careful when he slowed and lost himself in his work. He talked so fast, lived so loud, that she was always surprised to remember that he had a quieter, calmer side.

She reached back into the corridor and pulled the door closed, saving this moment for the two of them.

Ekanu has a thing for people who work with their hands. This is most noticeable in her attraction to Denifar and to Ain, who are both mechanists, but it also appears in her attraction to Kadeotak, Darei Ko'en, and two other people who guest-star in as-yet-unwritten stories. Interestingly, I didn't realize this quirk until I actually wrote her interacting with Ain in Pythas and the blatant similarities (in profession, not personality) between him and Denifar socked me in the head.

Funny how we learn things about characters. :-)
