ANALYSIS

As always, I count word by posting date rather than writing date, which can give somewhat misleading results if you are trying to track my periods of greatest productivity. I count "Trollstuck: Make Her Pay" only by completed chapters rather than section-by-section, which means there are a couple pieces of chapter 10 that are not officially in this analysis even though I did technically post them in 2013. I am also not counting the anonymous WIP kinkmeme fill I've been writing, though it currently totals a bit over 5,000 words. I will count it when I finish and de-anon, hopefully in early 2014. *crosses fingers*

In 2012 I wrote 159,850 publicly posted words; I fell nearly 40,000 words short of that in 2013. That is what the lack of a big bang challenge (or just going wildly overboard on some other challenge) will do, I suppose.

I signed up for five fic challenges/exchanges this year: Ouroboros Mix, Ladystuck Blind, Narnia Fic Exchange, Yuletide, and Ladystuck. I completed Ouroboros Mix, Ladystuck Blind, NFE, and Yuletide; Ladystuck was delayed due to technical issues with AO3 so that story and challenge now belong to 2014. I also participated in two iterations of the Three Sentence Ficathon, one hosted by [personal profile] rthstewart in March and April, and the other hosted by [livejournal.com profile] caramelsilver in December.

I don't think there was any particular theme to my year, nor did I discover any new and fascinating fandoms. I did write a bunch of crossovers and fusions, but a number of those were in response to prompts, so that may say more about other people than about me. (Well, I guess it says I write crossovers well enough that people think I will handle them in an interesting fashion, which is flattering.)

Once again I completely and utterly failed at my resolution to get back to writing original fiction. That trend is beginning to seriously annoy me. I think in 2014, I will attempt NaNoWriMo again with the specific goal of making progress on a bunch of my languishing original stories.

Did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
---For the last several years, my only real goal has been to write a minimum of 100,000 words per year. Anything beyond that is gravy. I picked that as a goal because it's a nice round number, because it is, by any standard, a fair amount of words, and because it's a target I can demonstrably reach even when I get hit by a prolonged depressive episode... but in that last case, I do have to work at it. Perhaps I will increase my goal to 120,000 words next year, which requires an average of 10,000 words per month. That would require me to get a bit more organized about writing times, which is all to the good.

Or perhaps I will finally finish my college reapplication and put my time to other uses. That would also be all to the good.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
---Wolf Hall, since I hadn't read the books! Also, I tend to write for canons with a more fantastical bent. I think this is the first straight-up historical fiction I've written, ever, though one can argue that I have been using elements of historical fiction in my fantasy (both original and fanfic) for years.

The other thing I didn't predict is that I finished "Secrets." That story had been hanging around my neck like an albatross for so many years, I had about resigned myself to the weight... and now it's gone. Done. I don't think that novel is my best work, but I learned a lot from it (both about writing and about myself), and by and large it does what I wanted it to do, so yeah, I am proud of it. Even if I still sometimes think I must be dreaming and I'm still only halfway through chapter 14.

Did you take any writing risks this year?
---I tried to imitate Hilary Mantel; does that count? *wry* Other than that, not really.

Do you have any fanfic or original fic goals for the New Year?
---Goal number one is to finish "Trollstuck: Make Her Pay." Goal number two is to knock off "Lemonade." Goal number three is to write at least five chapters of "The Guardian in Spite of Herself."

For original fiction, the goal is to write some at all. Well, and hopefully to finish "Harvest," because that's another WIP I've had hanging around my neck for ages, but mostly I just want to get back on the horse, so to speak. The details are not the point.

Favorite story -- not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest:
---Probably "Secrets," just because that story was so close to me for so many years, and I think I did Ginny justice in the end. Also "A Changing of the Tide," because it is outside my comfort zone and I think I pulled it off.

Best story:
---That is a very good question! I think it's a four-way tie between "Maid of Life and Death (Her Every Breath a Blade)," "The Corners of the World," "Into Something Rich and Strange," and "A Changing of the Tide." They are all very well-constructed pieces, where I thought about structure and voice and character progression and stuff, and I think they all say something, though I couldn't distill the messages into anything shorter than the stories themselves. They are also all fairly cold in their overall effect -- there's a sort of emotional remove, a distancing, a sense of rational observation from outside -- which is interesting to me. Perhaps that is the theme of my year.

Most underappreciated by the universe:
---"Maid of Life and Death (Her Every Breath a Blade)," which makes me sad because Jane Crocker is awesome, gen stories about female characters are awesome, remixes are awesome, [archiveofourown.org profile] lantadyme's original story is awesome, and I put a lot of careful work and thought into that fic, dammit, and people should appreciate Jane more!

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
---Probably "And the Big Bad Wolf," but that was deliberately written for a dark!fic challenge so eh. You pays your money, you takes your chances. There are also some seriously nasty implications lurking behind "Narutostuck: The Mother of Necessity," but they're not as overt and the story focuses on friendship/nakama/moirallegiance, so the emotional weight is different.

Sexiest story:
---Oooh, tricky! *ponders*

I think, for the sheer unexpectedness of the sexy, I would have to choose "Film Noir, Alternian Style," which was written for the prompt Dave and Terezi - "That should /not/ be sexy." and which has elicited precisely that line of dialogue from a number of reviewers. *grin*

Let's see, what else did I write that is even eligible for this category? "All That We Survey" (Jane/Dave), "Dance With Another" (Rose/Dave/Dadbert), "Zero-Sum Fallacy" (Naruto/Sasuke) a little bit, and then the various Uhura/Gaila three-sentence fics: "Body Language (The Scent of Home)," "Bring Me That Horizon," and most particularly "Reign in Hell." Also the Kirk/Gaila one, I guess -- "Sometimes You Fly" -- though that's not really about sex at all, despite happening in the middle of a sex scene.

I may have started writing actualfax porn in 2012, but it's still not anything remotely like a default mode. In a way, it's reassuring to know my self-assessment only required the addition of another room instead of reconstruction from the foundations, so to speak. *wry*

Hardest story to write:
---"Secrets," of course! Anything that takes eleven years to finish is obviously not easy. "Friends and Neighbors" was also a pain in the neck, not because it was particularly complicated but because I kept losing the thread of what should happen next. And "A Changing of the Tide" required a hell of a lot of research, but that was more fun than labor so I'm not sure it fits the spirit of this question.

Easiest story to write:
---The various three-sentence ficathon fills.

Most fun to write:
---Probably "In Which the Librarian of the Unseen University Makes an Unexpected Acquaintance." That was just beautiful all the way through. *grin*

Most disappointing:
---Any WIP I didn't finish. *headdesk*

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
---"Mad Science Family Reunion," I guess? I didn't have a lot of headcanon about alpha!Jade and alpha!Rose, and I suppose establishing something out of nothing counts as a shift.

Story with the single sweetest moment:
---"Recipe for Success," both literally (cake!) and metaphorically (Crocker family feels!).

Biggest surprise:
---"A Changing of the Tide," because for some reason, even though I obviously claimed I was willing and able to write for Wolf Hall, I never actually expected to get matched on it. I was thinking I'd probably match on some kind of oldschool YA fantasy... or if I got a 'what the hell, why not' match, it would be something like WTF Evolution (a Tumblr blog), for which I also (possibly unwisely) claimed I could write. But nope, I got Thomas Cromwell!

Also "When First We Practice To Deceive," because Homestuck and Black Jewels are, if not the most non-intuitive crossover I've ever heard of, certainly in the upper levels of implausibility. But I couldn't get the idea out of my head until I wrote a fic by way of appeasement. Brains are weird, you know?

Most revealing story:
---"All That We Survey" is fairly revealing in terms of my own personal kinks. So is any porn I write, to greater or lesser degrees -- after all, if it's not sexy to me, why would I be bothering? If you want to talk about preoccupations much nearer and dearer to my heart, though, we need to focus on "Secrets," "Friends and Neighbors," "The Corners of the World," "Into Something Rich and Strange," "No Story But Her Own," "An Equal and Opposite Reaction," "Maid of Life and Death (Her Every Breath a Blade)," "Sing a Song of Sixpence," "Cutthroat Hiring Process," "Take Deeper Roots," "Silence at the Proper Season," and "Faint Heart Never Won." Okay, and also all the Uhura/Gaila three-sentence fics, plus "Stranger in a Strange Land."

World-building is and always will be my first and greatest love; religion, ethics and consequences are a very close three-way tie for second place; and over the years I have grown more and more invested in writing about women and girls, because fuck knows the world at large (and fandom in particular) does not seem to be interested in doing enough of that for me, at least not in the ways and genres I personally want to read. Apparently past a certain point, I get tired of waiting and write the stories myself. *shrug*

---------------------------------------------

And that is that for the year! Now I'm going to take a nap, after which I will get back to work on my Ladystuck fic. One should start the year as one means to continue, after all. :-)

Oh gosh, I did not know you were a Zahn fan or even knew who Mara Jade was. That was my first foray into fan fic and online fandom and I wrote Stuff in 1995 just when Club Jade was getting started. It was a very heady time and we developed some very strong opinions about Mara, Talon Karrde, her ship, Jade's Fire, and how Mara should be presented. We used to follow Zahn, Stackpole and Allston around to Cons. I fell out of it in about 2001 and haven't read much of the new fic since. But I have OPINIONS about Mara Jade!
