[Fic] "Like a Sinking Star" -- Lucifer

Summary: Mazikeen and Lucifer in the garden. (200 words exactly)

Note: This ficlet was written for rosaxx50 as part of a three-sentence meme, in response to the prompt: Lucifer/Mazikeen. I keep failing at the three-sentence part, but this one is a double drabble so at least I'm managing some kind of structural restriction... [Tumblr crosspost]

Like a Sinking Star

They share wine and bread together in his garden, surrounded by the heady perfume of a thousand flowers and underneath that the subtler scents of water, soil, and the grass on which they sit: a world shaped to evoke joy, and every atom still alight with the ecstasy of its birth. Mazikeen feels the surge of life as it seeps into her blood through the air she breathes, and even Lucifer is not immune to the leaping echo of that delight.

She studies the line of his throat as he tips his head back to stare, smiling, at the sun -- his sun, in a way the old one was not though he kindled both the same -- and thinks how easily her hand might fit against his skin, how his breath might catch and his eyes meet hers half in amusement and half in offended pride, how she might teach him that trust is not the same as defeat...

But he looks down with the reflection of fire still caught in his eyes -- a window, unintended, into the dangerous wildness of his power and his will -- and she lets the moment pass, as she always does. There will be other days.

Oh, I like this one /very/ much. Mazikeen's view of Lucifer is always so clear-eyed and so... wistful? Something in that neighborhood.

Thanks! I think Mazikeen has always seen Lucifer much more clearly than he sees her... though he does get there in the end. (And then promptly gives her his power and leaves the entire universe, because, you know, Lucifer. *sigh*)

Oh my godddd, I love this deeply. Lucifer's paradise was very pretty in the comics, but I love that it is, in fact, just a delightful place? And Mazikeen is enraptured by it.

That entire middle line. I actually flailed reading it, all those lovely things about them pulled together, where they have such easy physicality, security in affection, where he is this overwhelming, wild, amazing thing (THE SUN!!) but she just sees so easily into who he is, too. Trust is not the same as defeat, very true, and very much them.

I also love the title. It is a super pretty title. Because DOOM.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! I figure a paradisal garden ought to be genuinely beautiful to all the senses, and I think that Mazikeen would appreciate a place of that nature which isn't marred the way the Silver City was marred by the angels' prejudice against the Lillim.

The title is a line from Tennyson's 'Ulysses,' and I did indeed pick it because of DOOM.
