Apropos of nothing in particular, all twelve of the sidefics for my "Apartment Manager" Naruto AU are now up on AO3 at this handy-dandy link. :-)

(This is kind of a promise to myself that I WILL get back to work on "The Guardian in Spite of Herself" as soon as I clear a couple more things out of the way. *crosses fingers, hopes for the best*)

And now to bed.

I am bored and attempting to stay awake. I am also, alas, out of inspiration for all my WIPs. So am I asking for prompts!

Give me a character or ship PLUS a scenario | setting | mood | line of dialogue, and I will try to write you a three sentence ficlet.

ETA: Prompts are closed! Thank you to everyone who contributed. :-)

Summary: An object lesson in ninja tactics as applied to civilian social relationships -- aka the fic in which Naruto and Shinnin adopt Sakura before she attracts Ino's attention, but Sakura's parents are not so keen on their daughter's new friends.

This story is an expansion of a fragmentary comment!fic for [livejournal.com profile] aishuu, who asked for a sequel to "The Way of the Apartment Manager." It's set between "Apartment Manager" and "Guardian" -- my timeline is a little fishy since I was thinking in terms of American school years rather than Japanese ones when I wrote the "Apartment Manager" epilogue and also Kishimoto's depiction of Konoha's climate is kind of weird in general (i.e., it is the Land of No Seasons, where people can be equally comfortable wearing thick winter coats or wearing shorts and mesh t-shirts O_o), but I think this story works best if it falls in early spring, half a year after Naruto enters the ninja academy and roughly a year and a half after he moved into Yukiko's building. ("Guardian" will start several months later, in late summer.)

Aishuu, I am sorry it took me so ridiculously long to finish. Hopefully the length makes up somewhat for the delay. (8,200 words)

[ETA: The slightly revised final version is now up on ff.net!]

Friends and Neighbors )

If you spot any obvious errors (whether canon or mechanical), or have suggestions for improving the story flow or characterization, please tell me! I did some edits yesterday and today, but I don't think I have enough distance from the story to really tell whether there are problems, and if so, what and where they are.

And now... laundry. *ominous music*

This is a comment!fic for [personal profile] theodosia21, who asked for: Perhaps something during or after "The Way of the Apartment Manager," with Yukiko being really competent or happy or just generally awesome? I hit the first part dead on, but not so much the second. Sorry!

For All the Works and Days of Hands: A month after Naruto moves into her building, Yukiko receives an invitation to her cousin Yuichiro's anniversary dinner celebration and wonders when she drifted so far apart from her family. Heavy on backstory, slightly melancholy. (875 words)

A somewhat maudlin ficlet set a year after "The Guardian in Spite of Herself," though not giving away anything about the ending. (Well, it gives away two people who survive, but I am willing to tell you right now that Yukiko, Naruto, Sasuke, and Naga all survive. Beyond that, though, I am not saying.) Anyway, Sasuke understandably still has issues about his family's deaths. (425 words)

[The revised and expanded final version is now up on ff.net.]

Set in Stone )

...You know, I think I listen to too much classic rock at work. Pink Floyd is clearly getting to me. *wry*
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
I mentioned midway through "The Way of the Apartment Manager" that Yukiko is a genjutsu expert because she absolutely sucks at ninjutsu. The following ficlet is a slightly more detailed explanation of her problem, which is a variation of Rock Lee's inability to use externalized chakra at all. (In other words, I am doing self-indulgent world-building about Kishimoto's rules of 'magic.' *grin*) 475 words.

What You Need )

And now to bed.
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
This is not the fic I owe [livejournal.com profile] aishuu, but it sets the stage for that fic. Set a month or two after Naruto enters the ninja academy, probably mid-autumn. (In case you have forgotten, Shinnin is the girl Naruto tentatively befriends in the epilogue of "The Way of the Apartment Manager." He is still friends with her at the start of "The Guardian in Spite of Herself.")

Uzumaki Naruto is the most interesting person Kigaru Shinnin has ever met. She has no regrets for her lost popularity. (925 words)

[The revised and expanded final version is now up on ff.net.]

No Wasted Deed )

I had the damndest time thinking of a title for this fic, and I am not wildly enthused by the one I finally settled on. If you have a better idea, please tell me!

Also, since Shinnin and Naruto have already 'adopted' Sakura in this world, when Ino goes looking to practice random acts of kindness on less popular girls, she picks Hinata as her project. As you might guess, by the time Naruto's class reaches graduation, the patterns of interaction among the kids are noticeably different from canon. :-)
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
I have become worse and worse about respecting the time limits on [livejournal.com profile] 15_minute_fic. In other words, tonight I wrote a 45 minute fic, because I wasn't at anything remotely like a conclusion after only 15 minutes. *sigh*

Another "Apartment Manager" sidestory, this one set maybe a month after Naruto and Shinnin befriend Sakura. So, midwinter-ish?

Naruto has a bad day at school. Yukiko wishes he'd let her help more. (1,150 words) [The slightly revised final version is now up on ff.net.]

Tug of War )

Sometime soonish, I need to go back and finish the fragment I started for [livejournal.com profile] aishuu about how Naruto becomes friends with Sakura, and his trouble dealing with her parents. It may become relevant later on in "Guardian."
edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
This is a slight revision of a cut scene from ch. 11 of The Guardian in Spite of Herself. I like the scene, but it was dragging out the plot too much even for me, so I skimmed over Naruto's and Sasuke's introduction to the trade caravan and jumped straight to their arrival in Nagarehiya. Nonetheless, this is what happened the first morning after the boys were discovered. (1,350 words)

[The slightly revised final version is now up.]

Testing the Waters )

I am currently writing the ch. 13 scene in which Yukiko and Seichi take Naruto and Sasuke to the Nagarehiya guard station, planning to turn the kids over to some Leaf-nin who will take them safely back to Konoha. Things do not go quite as they expect.

I think I am about 2/3 of the way through the chapter now. Anything past ch. 13, though, will have to wait until I have caught up on canon.

Found via [livejournal.com profile] askerian:

Pick one of my stories and I will tell you the first line (ETA: okay, the first few paragraphs, on the theory that context is more interesting than concision) of its sequel. Even if I was never actually planning to write a sequel. Even if it already has a sequel -- I'll give you the first line of another version of its sequel!

Do not ask me about "Strange Likenesses," because I don't yet know how that will end (basically, there is the wildly unlikely happy ending, several variants of the rather likely inconclusive ending, and the semi-likely 'rocks fall, everyone dies' ending). Everything else is fair game.

Sequel snippets written so far:

for The Way of the Apartment Manager (So how did Naruto wind up friends with Sakura by the start of "Guardian"? I will probably continue this at some point.)

for Lemonade (Thus proving that I do so know where the story's going.)

for Endurance (This one turned into an actual fic, 900 words long. *headdesk* I am not sure how 'canon' this sequel is, though, as I'd left "Endurance" inconclusive for a reason.)

for New Horizons (ie, the story in which Ginny, Harry, and Draco have a post-DH-epilogue threesome in Greece. Naturally there are repercussions. *grin*)

for The Two Secretive Princesses (925 words on Toph and Mai during Ozai's invasion of Toure-on-Marsh. Rather dark.)
---[[or the more canonical version, which includes fewer deaths and more mentions of Aunt Ermintrude]]
