if it weren't true, I wouldn't believe it
Dec. 18th, 2003 06:40 pmIn other words, I've been reading 1066, the story of the Norman Conquest, the related Norwegian invasion of England, and all the backstory. Fascinating book. Fascinating events. And if it weren't true, nobody would ever believe it. It's just too implausible, too many wild coincidences. History is kind of humbling that way. We aren't the product of some inevitable progression... nah, we're just a sort of cosmic accident. I choose to believe that our free will has some effect on the flow of history, but it still hangs by such unpredictable threads.
No editing today. Went shopping for Christmas presents, did up and sent some cards, and cleaned house a little. Dad's in Philadelphia and Vicky's going out, so it's just Mom and me for dinner. We're having leftover porkchops in a sort of Swiss steak sauce. It smells good, at least. Hope it tastes good too!
I am waiting for New Year's to pass. After that, I think I can finally collapse and sleep for a week. Unfortunately, I still have too much to do for that to be a viable option at the moment.
