The philosophical stuff about the trio's friendship is something I've been mulling over since reading OotP -- which was a book with many flaws, good though it was, and one I occasionally feel the need to explain and refigure so it actually hangs together, goshdarnit.
The childhood stuff... a lot of that is based on my own memories, only skewed through Hermione's viewpoint. We were both bookworms and know-it-alls, and I milked that for all it was worth, but we made different choices about how to deal with that basic situation, and we have some fundamental differences in temperament. Among other things, Hermione is a realist, which I have never been -- that's one reason why, despite superficial similarities, I have a devil of a time writing Hermione.

Ginny is SO much easier.
