The more I thought about secret missing-nin hideouts, the more I realized they have to sit at the top of a long logistics chain. Because people have to eat! And food costs money! So you have to acquire food, and clothing, and water, and power/fuel, and unless you're very careful about spreading those purchases around, they can be tracked. Presumably ninjutsu can take care of some problems, like construction material costs if you're good at earth-moving jutsu, or maybe some fuel requirements if you're good at fire jutsu (just have someone heat a water tank to boiling every hour or so). And storage seal scrolls must be fiendishly expensive (and probably also specific to whatever they're storing and/or not suitable for keeping perishable items from, well, perishing) or people would use them for transporting everything under the sun.
Anyway, it's a fascinating field and I want to play around with it some more at some point. :)
Also, yeah, if Orochimaru wants his secret bases to remain secret, he must spent a LOT of time on proper waste disposal procedures. (Or, more accurately, has other people to take care of that for him.)
