My actual headcanon about Telemain is that his parents were the village bakers, and he drove them to utter distraction because baking is a science as well as an art and he would. not. stop. experimenting. (And also getting distracted and wandering off in the middle of said experiments, which tended to result in lots of burnt not-quite-bread and/or oven fires.) They were quite happy to pay Morwen's aunt Grizelda for a stack of magic books and a handful of basic lessons, since at least that kept Telemain out of the kitchen.
He only occasionally remembers to write to them as an adult, but they badgered him into inventing a spell that means their letters and packages always reach him even if he's moved and forgotten to tell them his new address.
