I'm walking a line with Kakashi and Iruka, because it's a fun challenge to layer things so readers can interpret their relationship in different ways.
I was writing original fiction long before I'd even heard of fanfiction, so I come by my habit of creating OCs (and my obsession with world-building) quite naturally. I'm glad they're working for you so far.
I think Sasuke is the sort of person who, even if he wants help, refuses to admit or show that desire. And since he seemed fairly 'together' on the outside, and since Iruka is doubtless extremely overworked, he probably didn't think too deeply about Sasuke's needs. Besides, unlike Naruto, Sasuke wasn't a problem student. :-)
